Lone Iranian Hacker Claims Responsibility for SSL Breach

By Liam Eagle, March 28, 2011

The sign-in page and SSL certificate for Hotmail, one of the services targeted in the attack

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- According to several reports published Monday, a lone Iranian hacker has claimed responsibility for the Last week’s SSL certificate hack that targeted several major online communications tools, including Hotmail, Skype, Gmail and others.

The hacker reportedly backed up the claim in a post on the document-sharing site Pastebin that included names, accounts passwords and other details on how he broke into the systems of Comodo reseller InstantSSL.it, and was issued the rogue SSL certs.

Following the attacks last week, there was some speculation that the attacks – which appeared to originate from a server based in Iran – were sponsored by Iran’s government, and politically motivated.
A Guardian article on the hacker’s claim includes a quote from Comodo CEO Melih Abdulhayoglu who, following last week’s incident, issued a statement citing some circumstantial evidence that the attacks were state-backed. "We believe these are politically motivated, state-driven/funded attacks," he said, suggesting that the fake certificates would be used to collect the details of activists using the sorts of tactics used in phishing attacks.
The attacker claiming responsibility for the attacks, however, says this was not the attack’s intent, which was actually retribution for the Stuxnet worm, which was allegedly designed by government-sponsored groups to target nuclear reprocessing facilities in Iran.

The Stuxnet worm, discovered in July of 2010, specifically targeted industrial applications. Its impact in Iran was substantially greater than elsewhere, with 60 percent of infections reportedly occurring there.

DDoS: The Emerging And Alarming Threat Against Hosted And Cloud Services with Darren Anstee of Arbor

By Justin Lee, March 24, 2011

Darren Anstee, EMEA solutions architect at Arbor delivering his presentation

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) –- The afternoon's final session at the Magic Cinema came from Darren Anstee, EMEA solutions architect at Arbor (http://www.arbor.net/).

With the rather lengthy title of "Distributed Denial of Service: The emerging and alarming threat against hosted and Cloud services", Anstee started his presentation by discussing the eveolution of the DDoS threat.

In Arbor's 2010 infrastructure security survey, which was conducted between September and October of 2010, the company found that the severity and complexity of DDoS is growing,
There was a a 102 percent year over year growth, and a 1000 percent growth since 2005.

Anstee explains that charging attacker motivations and increased availability of Botnets have been contributing factors to this significant increase.

On the more technical side, Anstee discussed the infrastructure of DDoS attacks against data centers,

He walked attendees through the anatomy of a DDoS attack, as well as looked at examples of common attacks, such as volumetric traffic floods, reflection attacks, TCP resource exhaustion, and application layer attacks.

The last section of his presentation concentrated on best current practices in combating DDoS threats.

As Anstee explains, the six phases of infrastructure security begins with preparation, identification, classification, traceback, reaction, and post mortem.

Intelligent DDoS mitigation systems is a key part of a DDoS detection and mitigation solution. They look at changes in normal behavior, says Anstee, using such monitoring devices as a flow telemetry.

Using baseline, misuse and fingerprint detection, IDMS use a multi-layer filter to mitigate counter-measures against attacks, he says.

Obama To Decide Fate of AT&T and T-Mobile Merger

March 21st, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – AT&T today announced their decision to acquire T-Mobile for approximately $39 billion in cash and stock. This agreement was approved by the board of directors from both companies and will probably end the commercials T-Mobile ran making fun of the AT&T network. The merger could affect millions of wireless users in the United States through possible sales of iPhones to the T-Mobile services. While this merger is under way it still has the obstacle of Obama’s administration and the possibility of the merger being challenged in court.

Certain statutory laws and regulations in the U.S. prohibit “unfair trade practices.” A merger could establish a monopoly that would represent a “restraint of trade” by forcing competitors our of the market and limiting choices for the consumer. The current residing presidential administration is responsible to govern deals and decide if such a merger could constitute such a violation of regulations and if it is worth prosecuting in regards to.

AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile would create the second and fourth largest wireless providers in America. Verizon is ranked first with 100 million customers, which AT&T currently holds about 95 million. T-Mobile has 34 million customers to date. With the acquisition AT&T would be lined up to hold approximately 37% market share of the wireless industry. While some economists would not declare that a 37% market share defines a monopoly, they do believe that the larger share may allow AT&T to further undercut prices of competitors to create one.

AT&T has stated that it plans to use the merger to expand its network and make broadband available to more Americans. Customers of both of these companies could potentially start gaining new options and benefits if the merger goes through. Typically these types of deals are reviewed by the Free Trade Commission before the agreement is finalized and the merger takes place. If the deal is not approved it does not mean the merger cannot happen. Rather, it will mean that both companies my continue with the merger but with threat of antitrust legal action being taken by the Justice Department. At this time it is unclear, if the merger is not accepted under current administration, if either company would be willing to move forward in full knowledge of the possible court injunction. Future administrations may also decide later to sue and break up the company.

Before the merger can more forward, it must undergo a mandatory 30-day review process mandated by the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act. While 95% of deals are made and completed during this 30 day process, the other 5% of transactions usually require more documentation showing proof that the merger would not be a restraint on trade. This process can take months and potentially require millions of dollars in legal fees. In addition to this, investors may grow worried about the deal causing stock prices of both companies to fall. Potential acquisitions often have a chance to be killed simply by the FTC delay.

Symantec SSL Certificates Used by 70 Percent of Websites on Alexa Netcraft Survey

By Nicole Henderson, March 25, 2011

Symantec's new Express Renewal feature eliminates the need to submit a Certificate Signing Request, as shown here

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- SSL certificate provider Symantec (www.symantec.com) announced on Friday that its SSL certificates are found on more than 70 percent of the Internet's top 1,000 websites, according to the March 2011 Alexa Netcraft Index.
This announcement comes a week after Symantec added two new features to simplify the renewal process of its SSL certificates.

Symantec's SSL brands include VeriSign, GeoTrust, Thawte, RapidSSL and TC Trust Center.
“As organizations more fully appreciate the variety and severity of online threats, the need for SSL-secured web sessions, at more touch points across the Internet, will become more and more apparent," Fran Rosch, vice president of Trust Services at Symantec said in a stayement. "Online leaders seeking to maintain trust in their brands will continue to work with Symantec on the strength of its brands' reputations for strong encryption, innovative services and world-class technical support. When it comes to building trust online, business will continue to come to Symantec."

Recently, IT security provider Comodo revealed that a Registration Authority located in Southern Europe was hacked, leading to nine rogue SSL certificates on seven domains.
The Alexa Netcraft SSL Index cross-references the Netcraft SSL survey with the Alexa Top Sites list, which ranks the 1 million most visited sites by popularity.

According to the press release, more than 100,000 websites display the VeriSign seal by deploying VeriSign SSL, VeriSign EV SSL or VeriSign Trust Seal solutions.
Symantec says the VeriSign seal is viewed up to 650 million times a day "as the most popular and recognized security mark in the world."

Google Claims China Blocking Gmail

(The Hosting News) – Google, Inc. recently charged the Chinese government of blocking its Gmail services which has been making it difficult for locals to access the site.

Many people inside the country have been complaining past week saying they’ve had difficulty accessing their account or sending email. Even the Person Finder application seems to have connectivity restraints, which was set up to help people locate their missing relative during the aftermath of a disaster such as the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

Google first became aware of the problem just a few weeks ago and has checked into the issue and reports that there are no technical issues on its

side. Their security blog continues to state, “This is a government blockage carefully designed to look like the problem is with Gmail.” In another part of the blog they state “we’ve noticed some highly targeted and apparently politically motivated attacks against our users. We believe activists may have been a specific target.”

ICANN Approves .XXX Top-Level Domain

By Liam Eagle, March 21, 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- At its meeting in San Francisco last week, the board of Internet regulatory body ICANN (www.icann.org) decided Friday that it intends to contract with ICM Registry (www.icmregistry.com) for the creation of a .XXX top-level domain, in spite of protestations from within the adult content business.
In a press release, ICM Registry, which has spent years campaigning for the creation of the TLD, says it intends the domain do be “a clearly labeled place where adult entertainment can be accessed.”

As a sponsored TLD, .xxx would have certain restrictions, being available only to the adult entertainment industry, and requiring registrants to complete an application process overseen by the International Foundation for Online Responsibility.

Opponents within the adult business have fought against the domain’s creation, via an organization named the Free Speech Coalition, arguing that, among other things, a .xxx domain would “ghettoize” their content, that its creation implies the adult Internet was previously operating irresponsibly and that they would be forced to register domains at considerable expense to protect their existing trademarks.

ICM Registry says the benefits to consumers would include an assurance that they’re protected from risk associated with identity theft, credit card fraud and images of child abuse, and that that consumers not interested in encountering adult material would have a simplified means of blocking it.

The approval of the domain might have been in part due to the scale of the opposition. In a post made Thursday on Domain Name Wire, Andrew Allemann wrote that a protest against the .xxx domain only managed to draw about 25 protestors.

ICM Registry also insists that there are benefits for the adult community.

“The knock-on benefit for the adult industry,” says ICM Registry CEO Stuart Lawley, quoted in a press release, “beyond the fact that consumers are going to be more prepared to make purchases when they know that they will be secure, is that the consumer will also know that .xxx sites are scanned daily for malware, thereby being safer to visit, leading to greater traffic. It’s a win-win situation.”
In another Domain Name Wire post reporting on the approval, Allemann wrote that many board members had spoken about the vote, with several saying they had voted in favor, partly because if a .xxx TLD isn’t approved now, it would almost certainly be submitted and approved in the new TLD process, and that the regulation around the current bid is preferable to the unregulated potential future domain.
The domain itself seems to have some traction. A ticker on the ICM Registry site is currently showing more than 300,000 pre-registrations for .xxx domain names.

Google’s New “Farmer” Algorithm Changed

March 14th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – Search Engine Academy NY Metro, announced today a new SEO “Content” Workshop designed to help businesses address Google’s “Farmer” Algorithm Change. Held at SEA NY METRO headquarters at 800 Westchester Avenue, Rye Brook, NY, the half-day workshop will take place on Friday, April 8th from 10am – 3pm. Students must register in advance athttp://www.seanymetro.com.
Google’s new algorithm change — known as “Farmer” — is designed to weed out shallow and low-quality content from its top search results. SEA NY METRO’s new course helps businesses avoid penalization by getting their content on the right track.
“Google’s recent algorithm changes come at a very opportune time,” says Mike Sancimino, managing partner and lead SEO Instructor at SEA NY METRO. “The Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) have been getting more and more cluttered with lower quality websites. Google’s primary existence is based on delivering the best, most relevant content to the user in the shortest amount of time for a given search term. If Google cannot do this, it will lose its competitive advantage – fast!
It’s changes like this that drive the need for businesses/site owners to become educated so they can take corrective action. We’ve been coaching our clients and students for years about the importance of original, quality content. Hopefully, Google’s clear message won’t fall on deaf ears. Our “Getting Found” workshops are designed to help businesses avoid Google’s list of ‘loser’ content websites, so they will continue to move up in the SERPs,” adds Sancimino.
“Content Spinning for Your Website & Social Media” Workshop
The comprehensive half-day course titled, “Content Spinning for Your Website & Social Media,” leads fledgling SEOs through the content development process, keeping reader and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) best practices top of mind. The course is geared toward those who have a handle on basic SEO factors, such as keyword development and inbound linking strategies, but content creation and leveraging social media is a weakness.
Prosper Communications’ SEO-PR expert and SEA NY METRO lecturer, Lisa Kaslyn, will instruct students on how to tell a story, why they should be blogging; how to mine content and use the news, complementary industries, and subject matter experts to create rich, unique and relevant content for target audiences and search engine spiders. The course will also provide an in-depth understanding of how social media can be leveraged as another channel to repurpose content, create link-baiting opportunities, and drive business exposure and website traffic.
Lisa will provide editorial input and advice on one page of web copy from each class participant’s website. Students signing up will be asked to submit a web page that they would like to work on and receive a critique on title tags, meta description and H1 tags, as well as an overall assessment and recommendations on improving copy and content type.
The workshop will take place at SEA NY METRO headquarters at 800 Westchester Avenue, Rye Brook, NY on April 8th from 10am – 3pm. For more information, visit the SEA NY METRO website: seanymetro.com.

1&1 Expands Services To Canada

March 17th, 2011 By: THN News
(The Hosting News)  - 1&1 Internet, Inc., a global leader amongst Web hosts, today announced that it will now offer its hosting solutions to the Canadian small- and medium-sized business market.  As an international hosting provider, 1&1 welcomes the opportunity to provide affordable and reliable hosting to Canada’s small business market through www.1and1.ca.
According to 2010 research by Industry Canada, only 41 percent of Canadian businesses currently have a website, while the remaining 59 percent are losing the opportunity to extend their reach to new market segments online.  With a suite of hosting solutions ranging from website packages, domain registrations and online marketing services to high performance dedicated servers, SMBs are offered all of the necessary tools to produce a thriving website.
Together with 1&1’s extension to Canada, all customers registering a domain with the Canadian country code .CA will receive a special price of $9.99 CA dollars for one year. The offer is the ideal way for an SMB to build on their online presence or expand their domain portfolio while addressing Canadian customers. In fact, results from a study1 conducted by 1&1 of Canadian users shows that two-thirds of respondents find .CA domain registration to be a necessity for their hosting providers.
“1&1’s continued growth in North America presented the opportunity for us to offer our hosted solutions directly to Canadian businesses and consumers,” says Oliver Mauss, CEO of 1&1 Internet Inc. “While the fundamental needs of a small business are fairly consistent in all countries, the Canadian SMB market brings with it an additional set of requirements, and we relish the opportunity to satisfy these. Our recent study of this market provided us with valuable insight into preferred business practices in Canada. For example, almost 70 percent preferred to use local currency as opposed to the US dollar. In order to better serve our Canadian customers, we built a business platform using only their local currency to ensure their experience with us suited their business preferences.”
Founded in 1988, 1&1 operates in seven major markets across Europe and North America.  The company manages more than 11 million domain names, while its global community is some 10 million customer contracts strong.  By addressing the Canadian market, 1&1 continues its ambitious international expansion and further consolidates its position as a leading web hosting company in the world.
“Late last year, we launched our services in Poland and we have plans to continue expanding our services into more markets throughout this year.  With over 20 years of experience in the Web hosting industry, Canada is a natural next step for 1&1 in its on-going growth, and we are confident in our ambitions to satisfy this strong market,” adds Mauss.
Websites, Web Hosting, Web Marketing. Easy as 1&1. Find more information at www.1and1.ca for Canada or www.1and1.com for US customers.

Japan Requests US to Block Popular Websites

(The Hosting News) – In a recent effort to improve recovery efforts from the recent earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan, the military has decided to block the use of certain websites from its network. Japanese military has reported that these sites are not being blocked due to any content reason but solely to improve the bandwidth necessary for militaristic needs. On Monday the U.S. Pacific Command received a request to block the 13 highest traffic usage sites commonly used on military networks such as YouTube, Google Video, Amazon, eBay, Myspace, and MTV.com.
On a more interesting note to the bandwidth control is the continuing use of Facebook in Japan. The site is considered one of the highest bandwidth usage portals in the region, but it will stay up and running due to its growing use by deployed military personnel. Facebook is the most common way to stay in contact with loved ones and was decided to be an important tool in the recovery of the disaster.
Strategic Military Command spokesperson Rodney Ellison stated to CNN.com, “This is a response to a time of extreme demand for networks. This blockage will be of a temporary nature and may increase or decrease in the size and scope as necessary. We are doing this to facilitate the recovery efforts under way in Japan. We are trying to make sure we are giving them as many avenues and as much support as we can.”

DDOS -How To Combat Attacks

DDOS Content Sponsored By: Block DOS

(The Hosting News) – DDOS, or Denial-of-service attack, is the hacking ability to deny access for legitimate users of a certain service, thus making them unable to use their service.  It destroys many machines and impedes services over the worldwide web and it is actually the greatest internet problem as of lately.  Chances are you have heard of it!
The hacking process only involves installation of the DDOS software to a particular device, and when the legitimate user does a certain task or command on the device where the software was installed, this can automatically sendoff packets of commands onto all of the machines to be infected.
One of the primitive cases of DDOS attack is bombarding someone emails to fill the disk drive of his/her computer.  However, as of late, there had been more advanced cases of DDOS attacks, one of which is through networked computers.  Users can be denied access to FTPs, domain name services, and even access to the internet.  These attacks can come from different sources, either inside or outside a certain machine or network.  They attack the machine either by eating up its bandwidth, memory, or other resources, as well as, in a worse scenario, stop its function and shut the whole system down.  You might be experiencing an attacked either if you have unusually slow network connections, if you become unable to view a certain website or any other website, or again, bombarding of emails.
DDOS attacks are very serious threats and can cause a lot of damage to a certain user, especially if that is intended for business.  Remember that a business website or platform prepared for within a long time can be attacked just within a few minutes.  This can actually result in business inactivity since returning or new customers would not be able to gain access to your website, thus causing you to lose sales.  Even your web hosts can be affected; using all your allotted bandwidth is a prime way in which hosting companies are attacked.  You will also have to put time to fix it, and it isn’t easily resolved.  This breach of security can also lead to having your reputation at stake, since your website’s reliability is questioned.
With all these in mind, it is actually explainable why DDOS protection is really expensive.  We are talking thousands or even millions of dollars compromised to your business.  So, in order to prevent this, you have two choices – either to buy your own equipment which can actually be very expensive, or rent the equipment.  However, renting does not necessarily make it all cheaper; instead it can actually cause you to spend more in the long run, especially if you opt for a very cheap hosting plan with just very little coverage, and you will never feel its importance until you become a victim.
Choosing an option will all depend upon the type of business you have.  The more your business is worth, the higher the service you should have.  Those websites that make a lot of money are actually more prone to being attacked, so if you are one of those running these type of websites, you have to at least have a high protection against DDOS attacks.  Buying your own equipment can cost over $250,000, excluding maintenance charges.  Renting, on the other hand, can cost from $8,000 a month to up to $480,000 (yearly), depending on how much security you need and how often you get attacked.
However, if you are just a small, temporary website and just needs little protection, you just have to outweigh both options and choose what’s more economical for you.  Buying an equipment actually is more practical to save money, however if you need 24/7 support in case anything happens, you can just rent the service.
If you think the symptoms described above are present on your website and you are being attacked by DDOS, you should likely start doing some measures to stop this immediately.  The best would be opening up your firewall, which is actually free on most computers.  However this is not really reliable especially if an attack is too strong or very fast.  It would take time for it to be able to classify as a certain command as either an attack or a legitimate one.  Cron jobs can also be helpful but is rather heavy to perform, as this eats up huge bandwidths and speed of your connection.
Thus, the best way to not let this happen is to prevent it firsthand.  That’s why DDOS hosting or equipment is recommended.  If you are hosted on a provider, any attack coming from any potential hacker will have to go through the provider’s DDOS protection before reaching onto your server.  This lessens the possibility that these attacks can go onto your system to destroy it.  Also, buying your own equipment is rather reliable, but this may mean that you have to hire technicians as well as maintenance provisions.  But still, this is all worth it for a serious threat DDOS is.  Prevention is always better than cure, and you would not want to risk all your efforts and money to just be broken down by criminals in a blink of an eye.

Yahoo to Invest $500 Million in Data Center Expansions

By Nicole Henderson, March 11, 2011
Yahoo's data center in Lockport, New York

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Yahoo has revealed plans to invest $500 million in expanding its data center infrastructure, according to a report Friday by Data Center Knowledge.
Yahoo says it plans to build in 2012 and beyond. The planned expansion includes existing data centers in Buffalo, Omaha and Washington state and new facilities in Singapore and Switzerland.
“We are in essence rewiring the entire infrastructure of Yahoo,” Scott Noteboom, the head of data center operations at Yahoo said. “We’ve gained approval to invest half a billion dollars to build new data centers. We’ll be migrating the entire footprint of Yahoo to these more efficient facilities.”
According to the report, Yahoo released its Yahoo Computing Coop last year, a design that uses factory-built components and relies on fresh air rather than mechanical cooling.
In September, Yahoo opened a facility in Lockport, New York. The 155,000-square-foot data center was the first to implement Yahoo's Computing Coop. It has a power usage effectiveness of 1.08, compared with the industry average of 1.92.
In October, Yahoo announced that construction on its Avenches, Switzerland data center had begun. This facility is expected to have the same low PUE rating as the New York data center. The Switzerland location will be the first implementation of the YCC design in a retrofit of an existing building, according to the report.
Yahoo says it will build about 20 "edge pods", or smaller data center that store content closer to users. The facilities support caching and content delivery.
Noteboom says Yahoo can build new data center space for less than $5 million per megawatt of electric power, translating to an addition of 100 megawatts of capacity to the company's data center footprint with the next phase of expansion.

Netflix and Swiftrank Use Amazon Web Services Cloud Platform

By Nicole Henderson, March 10, 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Cloud services provider Amazon Web Services (aws.amazon.com) announced this week that online gloabl travel network Swiftrank (www.swiftrank.com) and video delivery company Netflix (www.netflix.com) use its cloud platform and related cloud services.
On Wednesday Amazon announced that Swiftrank will use its cloud platform for its network of travel websites. Netflix announced at the opening of Cloud Connect 2011 that it moved all of its production systems into Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud last year, according to a report by Information Week.
Based in Singapore, Swiftrank says that unlike other online travel sites, its sites provide partner hotels with direct links to their own hotel websites, driving "highly profitable direct bookings."
Swiftrank says that since migrating to AWS, it has seen improvements in site load speed worldwide.
“The flexibility of Amazon Web Services enables us to scale the infrastructure capacity both up and down in minutes, which has helped us accommodate our growing traffic and business. Perhaps most importantly, there is no risk in any single point of failure, and our hotel partners can be assured that they’ll never lose a sales opportunity,” Bryan Harwood, Swiftrank’s senior vice president of strategy and innovation said in a statement. “In addition, Amazon Web Services provides us with superior customer service and a secure transactional environment, which ensures a safe booking experience for our customers.”
According to the press release, Swiftrank has levergaed the cloud-based suite of products from Amazon Web Services, including Amazon Simple Storage Services, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, Amazon Relational Database Service, Elastic IP and Elastic load balancing. Swiftrank says these products work in conjunction with its DNS servers.
By switching to the cloud, Swiftrank has seen increased speed, scalability, and has realized 25 percent cost savings as compared to its previous server setup.
Netflix says it decided to use Amazon Web Services EC2 because of its rapid growth accelaration that made it a challenge to build data centers to keep up, according to a report by Information Week.
Part of the growth of its Website traffic is due to a free iPhone Netflix app and the ability to download media to game consoles like Xbox 360 and Wii.
The report said that Netflix moved most of its production systems, except the initial capture of customer credit card data, into Amazon's EC2.
"We are just about 100% in the cloud," Adrian Cockcroft, cloud architect at Netflix said at a wordshop on Monday. "We want to use clouds. We don't have time to build them."
According to Information Week, Cockcroft says Netflix chose Amazon over other cloud providers because of its size, scalability and cloud features.
Cockcroft expressed some challenges with Amazon's EC2's Elastic Load Balancer, which he said had too many limits for the scale Netflix needs to operate. He added that Netflix needs to handle terabytes at a time, while SimpleDB is suitable for dozens or hundreds of gigabytes of data.
The report points out that Netflix is a "unique cloud customer" as its on demand need for capacity gives it "a unique set of requirements that few are ever going to match." While there are challenges, the report adds that the fact Netflix has found Amazon EC2 as a suitable replacement for its own data centers shows the cloud "will be able take on some of the most strenuous enterprise tasks in the future."
On Wednesday Amazon partnered with SecludIT to release Elastic Detector for Amazon EC2, a fully automated event detection tool for Amazon EC2.
