Microsoft Partners with Web Hosts to Deliver Cloud Service Office 365

By Justin Lee,June 28, 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/) announced on Tuesday it has officially launched Microsoft Office 365 (http://office365.microsoft.com), teaming up with several hosting providers to deliver the cloud service in 40 markets.

The new service brings together Microsoft Office, Microsoft SharePoint Online, Microsoft Exchange Online and Microsoft Lync Online in an always-up-to-date cloud service, at a predictable monthly subscription.

The service was introduced in beta last year, and in a few months, attracted more than 200,000 organizations registered users.

Businesses using Office 365 are already reporting impressive results and reducing IT costs by up to an estimated 50 percent while boosting productivity.

Microsoft says it is building a "massive partner ecosystem" around Office 365, including systems integrators, software vendors, resellers and other partners.

While some hosting providers may be concerned with how they will compete against Microsoft's new cloud service, many have chosen to view the new service as an opportunity to increase its market reach by partering with the company.

More than 20 service providers around the world have partnered with Microsoft by introducing plans to offer Office 365 to their customers this year.

These companies, which include Bell Canada, Intuit, NTT Communications, Telefonica, Telstra and Vodafone Group, will package Office 365 with their own services to deliver the new offerings to millions of small and midsize businesses globally.

"Great collaboration is critical to business growth, and because it’s so important, we believe the best collaboration technology should be available to everyone," said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. "With a few clicks, Office 365 levels the playing field, giving small and midsize businesses powerful collaboration tools that have given big businesses an edge for years."

Office 365 is available in a wide range of service plans designed to meet the needs of businesses of all sizes.

Users can access a centralized interface for instant messaging and virtual meetings, working on files and documents at the same time and sharing ideas.

With Office 365, applications like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote and Outlook connect to Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint and Lync to deliver a solution for communication and collaboration.

Many industry analysts believe Microsoft Office 365 will challenge Google's suite of online productivity tools.
A full list of Office 365 service provider partners can be viewed here, while case studies of businesses that have tried Office 365 can be found here.

Web Host Orange Partners with Air Transport IT Firm SITA for Global Cloud Computing Infrastructure

By Nicole Henderson,June 22, 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting and IT business services provider Orange Business Services (http://www.orange-business.com/) announced on Wednesday that it will develop a cloud computing infrastructure with partner SITA (www.sita.aero/).

SITA is a provider of IT and telecommunication services to the air transport industry, though both companies say the network will extend to other types of businesses as well. The companies have had a business relationship for 10 years, according to a report by TMCNet.

According to the press release, the data centers are located in Atlanta, Frankfurt, Singapore, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and Sydney. The facilities in Atlanta, Frankfurt and Singapore will be fully operational in Q1 2012, and the rest will be available in Q3 2012, the companies say. All of the data centers will be Tier III+ and will be interconnected through Orange's MPLS network with no more than 100 milliseconds of latency, according to the companies.

The infrastructure will support each businesses' portfolio of cloud computing services including IaaS, PaaS, DaaS and SaaS offerings. The software layer of data centers will be similar but they will be built out as demand increases, according to a report by Datacenter Dynamics.

"SITA has a successful 60-year track record of working solely for the air transport community, taking a long-term view and investing for the industry's future. The globally managed network delivered to our customers as well as our industry knowledge provides the foundation for our investment in the air transport industry cloud," Francesco Violante, chief executive officer SITA said in a statement. "SITA continues to have a successful partnership with Orange Business Services, built on our network business. Cloud computing is a network-centric concept so when we were looking for a partner to build the infrastructure for the ATI Cloud, we knew it would be strategic to partner with a global operator."

"Orange Business Services was the obvious choice. Sharing the building and operation of the infrastructure brings economies of scale to both companies. Only by working together are we able to bring a fully formed, high-end cloud computing infrastructure that can meet the complex and global requirements of the air transport industry," he says.

According to the report, SITA is interested in serving the massive growth of the air transport industry in China, where 120 airports are expected to be built in the coming years.

Violante says China's industry will require access to technologies at speeds not yet deliverable there, according to the report.

He adds that airlines are increasingly interested in remote working and cloud computing options, though regulation restricts where the data can be held, according to the report.

"By working for so many years with SITA, we know that the air transport industry is highly demanding. Therefore partnering on a managed cloud computing infrastructure is real-world proof that Orange Business Services can deliver the same high-performance, high-security cloud services to its multinational customers," Vivek Badrinath, chief executive officer of Orange Business Services said in a statement. "The ambition of Orange Business Services is to make it easy for customers to access the IT resources they need by providing a one-stop-shop for a range of cloud computing services."

"By taking an integrated approach, Orange Business Services can deliver network and IT with end-to-end service level commitments wherever our customers do business," he adds. "Thanks to this joint infrastructure, we will bring increasingly varied and flexible cloud services to the international market like never before, providing the global reach and the reliability our customers need to catch the promises cloud computing can deliver. It is a key milestone in our ambition on the cloud computing market."

Last year, Orange launched its cloud services network hub.

By Nicole Henderson, June 24, 2011

A screenshot of SOE's website shows the consumer alert of the attack

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Sony (http://www.sony.com/) shrunk its network security department two weeks before its Sony Online Entertainment division was hacked, according to a lawsuit filed on Monday in San Diego.

Also this week, London police arrested a 19-year-old connected to the PlayStation Network hack.

According to a report by Reuters on Friday, the class action lawsuit accuses Sony of putting its corporate data ahead of its customers' data, installing the appropriate firewalls and security measures for its own data, and failing to do the same for its customers, despite knowing it was at risk.

The lawsuit alleges Sony laid off "a substantial percentage" of its Sony Online Entertainment workforce, including employees in its Network Operation Center responsible for responding to security breaches.

A report by the Escapist says Sony cut more than 200 staff in March.
In a network breach on April 16 and April 17, 25 million Sony Online Entertainment customers data was stolen.

Between April 17 and April 19, more than 77 million PlayStation users private information was stolen.

Sony estimated losses from the incidents to be as much as $171 million, not including any costs incurred from potential lawsuits.

The breadth of the hacks on Sony illustrate the importance of network security when dealing with customers sensitive information.

More recently, infamous hacker group LulzSec hit Sony's entertainment distribution arm Sony Pictures with a single SQL injection.

In May, a proposed class action lawsuit was filed in Toronto, seeking retribution for breach of privacy and negligence.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Hostway (http://www.hostway.com/) announced on Tuesday its plans to add 18,000 square feet to its Tampa, Florida data center.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Cloud services provider Amazon Web Services (aws.amazon.com) announced on Tuesday via its blog it has expanded content delivery service Amazon CloudFront (http://aws.amazon.com/cloudfront) and DNS service Route 53 edge (http://aws.amazon.com/route53) with new locations in Stockholm, Sweden.
The edge location marks the company's 19th worldwide and its sixth in Europe.

Launched in November 2008, Amazon CloudFront is a web service for content deliver that integrates with other AWS to enable developers and businesses to distribute content to end users with low latency, high data transfer speeds, and no commitments.
The service delivers static and streaming content using a global network of edge locations, which automatically routes requests to the nearest edge location for optimized performance.

Amazon Route 53, which launched in December, is a highly available and scalable DNS web service that is designed to give developers and businesses a reliable and cost effective way to route end users to Internet applications by translating URL names into the numeric IP addresses that computers use to connect to each other.

Users will not be required to do anything to their applications, as requests are routed worldwide based on latency so CloudFront will automatically route requests to this location when appropriate.

Therefore, any requests coming from the Scandinavian Peninsula and parts of Eastern Europe are likely to end up at these locations.

Users will have access to the full range of CloudFront features including Management Console support, private content, live streaming with Adobe Flash Media Server, HTTPS support, request logging, custom origins, and invalidation.

The blog post also mentions that Amazon CloudFront team and Amazon Route 53 team are currently hiring.

Easyspace sells .XXX domains

June 21st, 2011 By: THN News
(The Hosting News) – Easyspace, one of the UK’s largest web hosting companies, is offering customers the new .XXX domain name extension.

Sarah Haran, managing director of Easyspace, said: “The new dot XXX domain is about both brand identification and brand protection. If you’re in the adult industry it’s an obvious means of telling internet users what you do, while for other businesses it’ll be used as a defensive measure to prevent their brands becoming associated with porn.”

The .XXX domain is designed to move the adult industry into one clearly identifiable part of the web. Under the slogan ‘Let’s Be Adult About It’ ICM Registry is planning to allow trademark holders to protect their business by paying a one-time fee to block their brands in .XXX early in September. The new domain will then go on general sale several weeks later.

Sarah Haran added: “Details are already on the Easyspace website so you can register your interest with us now.”

The pricings have not yet been finalised.

Stuart Lawley, CEO, ICM Registry the operators of the .XXX domain name, said: “We look forward to working with Easyspace in the development and marketing of the new .XXX domain name extension.”
ICANN*, the non-profit organisation which oversees technical matters related to the internet, approved the introduction of the new .XXX top level domain or TLD on March 18th 2011 as part of an effort to allow a greater degree of innovation and choice and expand the number of communities addressed by the net’s domain name system.
It is believed that the .XXX domain will allow the adult industry to have a more branded identity.

FBI Scrubs 19,000 PCs Infected by Coreflood Bot Malware

By Justin Lee, June 23, 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The FBI told a federal court last week it has scrubbed 19,000 PCs that were previously infected with the Coreflood bot malware, according to a report by Krebs on Security.

The effort comes more than two months after the US Attorney's Office for the District of Connecticut was given the go-ahead to seize 29 domain names used in connection to the botnet, as well as to redirect traffic from the botnet's servers over to an FBI controlled-server.

The FBI also received a temporary restraining order that allowed it to send a command to Coreflood-infected PCs that would cease the botnet from operating.

The move is a part of a massive legal campaign that strives to wipe out one of the oldest and most dangerous malware viruses ever created.

Coreflood exploits the Windows operating system to create bot computers, infecting personal computers, larger organizations and businesses when it is downloaded by clicking on a "pop-up" or a link found on an unreliable website.

The malware has infected more than 2 million computers throughout its nearly 10 year existence.

According to the court-filed declaration, which can be viewed here, FBI special agent Kenneth Keller said the agency has sent about 19,000 uninstall commands to 24 identifiable victims in the US whose computers had been infected with the Coreflood malware.

The FBI said that all 24 victims, whom it had their written consent, did not experience any consequences from these uninstall commands, the FBI said.

The FBI has contacted hundreds of identifiable victims, as well as passed along information to about 25 of the largest ISPs in the US so they can alert their infected customers.

"The FBI has also provided information about infected computers to law enforcement agencies overseas," Keller told the court. "While it has not been possible to notify the owner of every infected computer, due in part to the difficulty in identifying the computer owners and obtaining accurate contact information for them, the decline in the size of the Coreflood Botnet is likely attributable in large part to the success of the victim notification efforts."

Keller also said that the FBI no longer needed to operate the substitute server in order to stop defendants from using the Coreflood botnet which are designed to steal private information.

Certificate Authority Comodo Releases Free E-commerce Site Scanning Tool

By Justin Lee, June 23, 2011

A screenshot of the Comodo SSL Analyzer page

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Certification Authority Comodo (http://www.comodo.com/) announced on Thursday it has launched the Beta release of Comodo SSL Analyzer (https://sslanalyzer.comodoca.com/), an e-commerce website scanning tool which instantly summarizes web server security levels.
Intended for consumers and website owners, the free tool provides important information regarding the security level of any e-business.
Ultimately, the tool seems to be a way for Comodo to promote the use of certificates among website owners, and help to create a better understanding of the benefits of having an SSL certificate.
When visiting the page, users will be prompted to type a domain name into the search field. Once the domain is entered, the SSL Analyzer will visit the domain and retrieve fast, comprehensive information about the SSL certificate and web server software.

This information includes the validation level of the certificate, the strength of the digital signature and the number and type of enabled security protocols/cipher suites supported by the web server.

In essence, it provides a more detailed version of the SSL certificate-enabled address bar featured on a web browser.

The SSL Analyzer highlights insecure elements that need immediate remediation in red, those elements that have an adequate level of security are in green, and an amber color means there is a potential issue that should be evaluated by the web server administrator.

"Information is power, and the more information customers have about the level of their protection the better off they will be," said Melih Abdulhayoglu, Comodo CEO and chief security architect.
