Time to Expand, Facebook Plans Data Center Add-On

(The Hosting News) – Social networking site Facebook is planning an expansion of its data center site in Prineville, Oregon. The news came after the company’s data center manager Ken Patchett discussed the plan with the Prineville City Council.

A second facility at the site will go a long way towards supplying Facebook with the resources it needs to assist its ever growing user base.
According to data center site DataCenterDynamics, during the meeting, Patchett noted that Facebook’s user base had grown from 350 million users to 750 million since the company initially announced plans to build in Prineville. Such a statistic represents a 400 million user increase.
Facebook initially broke ground on the data center site in January of last year and the company debuted the facility’s specifications in April with the Open Compute Project, a data center solution provider.

Commenting on the move via his Facebook profile, Oregon’s U.S. Senator Ron Wyden stated, “Great economic news for Oregon: Facebook announced today they will expand again in Prineville with the building of a new data center starting in October.
With Facebook’s continued growth this is a great economic partner for a community that has taken some hits but keeps on getting up. This means hundreds of construction jobs in the near term, and a long-term investment in future of central Oregon.”

Fifty-four employees now work at the current facility on the property. With the new facility, (besides shorter-term construction jobs) a small number of additional jobs are expected to be added for the site’s actual maintenance.

Web Host SoftLayer Adds Local Disk Storage Option to CloudLayer Hosting

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider SoftLayer Technologies (http://www.softlayer.com/) announced on Tuesday that it has expanded storage options for CloudLayer Computing Instances to include Local Disk Storage.

This announcement comes a week after the WHIR did a Q&A interview with SoftLayer's chief scientist Nathan Day about his HostingCon 2011 presentation on "The Power of Innovation."

SoftLayer says this option is available to customers that want an alternative to its Storage Area Network-based CCIs. The new offering enables customers to choose the best storage for their individual application and performance needs.

While both are available, SoftLayer says currently the two storage options cannot be used in conjunction with each other.

“Every customer is different, and needs different things from cloud,” Duke Skarda, chief technology officer for SoftLayer said in a statement. “That’s why we created Build Your Own Cloud, letting customers tailor the CPU power, RAM, and storage capacity of their CCIs to their application requirements. Local Disk Storage takes that even farther, bringing customers even greater control over how their cloud solutions perform.”

According to the press release, Local Disk Storage for CloudLayer is implemented as RAID Level 10 to accommodate for the reliability required by enterprises.

SoftLayer says 25GB or 100GB Local Disks are available for primary storage and those requiring additional storage can leverage 100GB or 200GB Local Disks.

“There are inherent differences between SAN and Local Storage that give each their own advantages,” Skarda added. “Since SAN-based CCIs store their data in a shared location, they will always provide faster recovery options and greater flexibility in scaling total storage capacity. But, naturally, Local Disk-based CCIs can provide faster input/output speeds, making them an even better option for storage-intensive applications and lowering total cost of operations. Now, it’s entirely up to you which benefits you’d rather leverage.”
Last week, SoftLayer added high-availability dedicated firewalls to its firewall security services.

China Investigates & Shuts Down ‘Fake’ Apple Stores

(The Hosting News) – Officials in China are said to be investigating various Apple retailers in the country after a blog post last week exposed a fake Apple store in Kunming, China.

The investigation has already resulted in two unauthorized Apple retailers shutting down. According to a Reuters report, the two were cited as failing to have a proper business license.

In a post last week, American blogger BirdAbroad (who lives in Kunming) described visiting a supposed Apple store in the city.
Even though having the Apple Store name, the products, and general layout, the blogger noted some obvious things that pointed towards the store being a fake. In fact, besides the one she initially posted on, BirdAbroad found another fake store with the obvious misspelling, “Apple Stoer.”
Despite the initial blog posting, it’s been reported that the two closures didn’t include the ‘fake’ Apple store initially described by the blogger.
Following the news, that store is said to be working on an Apple reseller application (according to the same Reuters report).

Apple currently has four ‘real’ Apple stores in the country, two in Beijing along with two in Shanghai. It’s unknown whether Apple played any part in the investigation and closures.

China is known as a hotspot for various counterfeited and copycatted items.
Recently AFP (Agence France-Presse) reported that last year EU officials seized fake items that accounted for a billion euros, 85% of which were from China.
However, entire counterfeit stores posing as the real thing appear to be less widespread.
It’s also important to note that the stores in question appear to have been selling actual Apple products.

Besides that, the country is known for its censorship of particular internet websites.
Blocked sites in the country have included the likes of Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.
The country has also banned popular video game consoles including Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii (the latter of which has led to a low quality Chinese rip-off system called the “Vii”).

Countries including the United States have criticized China over its rights record in the past.
Even with such tech limitations, Apple has seen progress in the Chinese market in the area of manufacturing. The company has various facilities, some of which are responsible for production of  Apple products like the iPad.

Dell Launches OpenStack Infrastructure as a Service Cloud Solution

Dell OpenStack Cloud Solution integrates various hardware and software

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- IT giant Dell (http://www.dell.com/) announced on Tuesday it has launched the Dell OpenStack Cloud Solution, a new cloud solution based on the OpenStack platform.

The solution comes four months after Dell, along with Equinix and Rackspace Hosting, first announced it was developing the OpenStack cloud demonstration and test environment.

The solution allows customers to integrate the OpenStack cloud operating system, cloud-optimized Dell PowerEdge C servers, the Dell-developed "Crowbar" OpenStack installer, and services from Dell and Rackspace Cloud Builders.

The Dell OpenStack Cloud Solution is designed to help customers quickly integrate, deploy and manage their IT resources in an OpenStack environment.

Tested, validated, and supported by Dell, the reference architecture is based on Dell PowerEdge C Series servers.

The solution incorporates Dell's Crowbar software framework, which manages the OpenStack deployment from the initial server boot to the configuration of the primary OpenStack components.

As a result, users are able to complete bare metal deployment of multi-node OpenStack clouds in a matter of hours, as opposed to days.

Once the initial deployment is complete, Crowbar can be used to maintain, expand, and architect the complete solution, including BIOS configuration, network discovery, status monitoring, performance data gathering, and alerting.

Dell has also released open source code for Crowbar to the community to enable users to build functionality to meet their specific system needs. It is working with the community to submit Crowbar as a core project in the OpenStack initiative.
Having been a member of the OpenStack community since its inception, Dell has worked closely with many key OpenStack partners, including Rackspace, Citrix, Opscode, Canonical, and Intel. Dell OpenStack Cloud Solution uses the current OpenStack release, Cactus.

With support for top public cloud application programming interfaces from Amazon and Rackspace, as well as extensive support for all of the major virtualization technologies from Citrix, Microsoft, and VMware, OpenStack and the Dell OpenStack Cloud Solution provide "all the components necessary to deliver a comprehensive cloud offering," according to the press release.

5 Useful Apache .htaccess Tricks

A majority of the world’s Internet-connected servers run Apache HTTP Server or one of its derivatives.  This web server software is free and open source, and many system administrators would not trust their servers to run anything else.  One of the great features that Apache offers is its directive system.  Users can add Apache directives directly to the Apache configuration files, virtual host files, or individual .htaccess files for websites.

With .htaccess, users can add directives to their websites without affecting the functionality of every site on the entire web server.  In order to use .htaccess, the AllowOverrides directive must be enabled in the dedicated server’s Apache config file.

1. Index – By default, users will not be allowed to see files contained in a directory with no index page.  Using the following directive, you can allow users to see the contents of a directory.  With other directives, you can also change the visual appearance of directory indexes.

2. Password protect directories – With .htaccess and htpasswd, you can set usernames and passwords for directories to prevent unauthorized access.

3. Error docs – The default Apache error pages are pretty bland.  You can create regular HTML+CSS documents and then use .htaccess to point specific error codes to them.

4. Rewrite URLs – Many content management systems and scripts use very long URLs containing instruction codes and session IDs.  You can limit those with search-engine-friendly rewritten URLs, thanks to Apache’s mod_rewrite module and an .htaccess file.

RewriteRule ^documents/([0-9]+)(.*)\.html$ documents.php?id=$1

5. Allow/Deny – You can allow or deny access to some or all users with your .htaccess file by either IP address or hostname.  For example, you might want to have a private directory that only you can access from the web.  You could deny all hosts except yours.
allow from 123.45.67.89 deny from all

Obama's Tax Ceiling Plea Swamps Web Servers Takes Down Websites

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The websites of various Congress members crashed Tuesday after their servers were flooded by traffic from Americans concerned about the nation's debt limit.

The sudden surge in traffic was in response to President Obama's speech Monday night which urged citizens who "want a balanced approach to reducing the deficit" to contact their congressional representatives.
The following morning, the Capitol switchboard was overwhelmed with phone calls, and at their peak saw more than 40,000 phone calls between noon and 1 pm.

Americans also took to the Internet to speak out on the tax ceiling, visting the webpages of Congress members and other government websites.

The massive traffic overloaded servers, whose pages are hosted by a Washington, DC-based hosting company called Fireside21 (http://www.fireside21.com/).

Visitors to House Speaker John Boehner's (R-Ohio) site Tuesday were met by a message that read, "The web page cannot be found".

Meanwhile, the web pages of presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-Minn.), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (Va.), the House Democrats' Budget Committee site and several Demoncractic websites also reportedly experienced outages.

The downtime has caused chairman of the House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight to consider holding hearings on developing methods to stop phone and web page from going offline in the future.

The subcommittee is looking into bringing in some IT experts to determine the severity of the outage issue and if it can be resolved.

"Was it just some glitch that a little teak that costs virtually nothing could be put in place so it doesn't happen again? Or if it's going to be a huge revamp, how much money will it cost and can we justify that?", said chairman Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.).

Congressional websites have experienced similar outages in the past. In March 2010, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh told listeners concerned  about the health care reform to call the Capitol switchboard, which led to The House being overwhelmed with some 40,000 calls per hour.
