IX Web Hosting Launches New Cloud Hosting Services

By Justin Lee, January 27, 2011
A diagram on IX Web Hosting's website that describes the nature of the cloud
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider IX Web Hosting (www.ixwebhosting.com) announced on Thursday it has officially launched its cloud platform to the market with the introduction of both public and private cloud hosting plans.
These plans introduce greater scalability and reliability for IX Web Hosting by using a true cloud infrastructure.
IX Web Hosting says it hopes the new cloud plans will help to significantly grow this sector of its business within the next six months.
The cloud plans have been designed for a number of different infrastructural environments and use-intents, but the same goals are met globally.
The company placed particular emphasis on the customer's ability to completely customize plan in its design, from the operating system to the amount of memory.
IX Web Hosting offers its public cloud with a comparatively affordable, highly scalable, user-friendly approach that appears more focused on bringing the cloud down to users new to the technology without any sacrifice.
"This is a the next generation of the old-faithful dedicated server," says Rick Gideon, IX Web Hosting's VP of system operations. "Powered by the same enterprise-grade equipment and software as our private cloud products, our public cloud solution is an 'out of the box' virtual server with dedicated resources that is able to host all sorts of applications including web servers, email and exchange servers, game applications, merchant processing and more. It has all of the core functionality of a traditional dedicated server, but without the downfalls of a stand-alone box because it benefits from the integrity and redundancy aspects inherit with the cloud. It's the best option for anyone who wants a self-administered, enterprise-grade solution on the web."
Instead of taking its current infrastructure and virtualizing it, IX purchased entirely new hardware optimized for virtualized environments which comprised of a multi-million dollar blade and SAN setup powered by Citrix.
Its lineup now includes two customizable cloud plans with features suitable for Small Businesses all the way up to enterprise level. Both plans are 100 percent scalable and include a user-friendly "slider" approach to all features.
IX's private cloud is designed for organizations that can benefit from both inter- and intranet cloud services, providing a development environment for an IT team on the cloud.

Web Host Industry Review: Weekend Reading – January 28, 2011

By Liam Eagle, January 28, 2011
A graph taken from Renesys' website which shows Egypt's sudden Internet downtime
Every Friday, WHIR editor in chief Liam Eagle assembles some notes on stories from the web hosting industry this week that you might have missed or that might, for one reason or another, be worth revisiting.
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Friday was a busy day around the WHIR newsroom this week, as most of the companies, government agencies and African nations with things to get done before the end of the week waited until we closed for the day on Thursday.
Of course I’m being glib, but waking up this morning to the news that the Egyptian government had decided (and, perhaps more significantly, managed) to basically turn off the country’s connection to the Internet was pretty astonishing.
And it had us scrambling, especially falling as it did on the eve of InterXion’s IPO – just about as significant a hosting industry specific event as we’ve seen in the young year of 2011. We also posted a Noise Filter story collecting certain points of fact and opinions from around the web on today’s offering.
The title for most notable hosting industry event of 2011, however, can be safely assigned to the late Thursday announcement that telecommunications carrier Verizon had agreed to acquire publicly-traded data center operator Terremark for $1.4 billion
Rounding out that very busy Friday was a bit of a continuation of the WikiLeaks saga that dominated headlines through the last six or seven weeks of 2010. It was reported that the FBI had obtained 40 warrants related to DDoS attacks that have taken place in apparent support of the whistle-blowing website.
Earlier in the week, we saw some other interesting regulatory news, as it was reported that the US Department of Justice was seeking new data retention requirements for ISPs.
And pulling on that thread a little more, WHIR blogger David Snead put up an excellent post this week looking at some of the rules around the effects of injunctions on hosting providers, in light of a recent Seventh Circuit court ruling that an injunction involving a customer’s content could not be enforced against the host.
One more very interesting thing from earlier in the week – after years of non-specific depletion warnings, Hurricane Electric said this week that it expects the final blocks of IPV4 addresses to be issued at the top assigning level by next week, meaning that not far down the road, Regional Registries and ISPs may not be able to fulfill requests for IPV4 addresses.
Of course, this week, as with every week, we’ve gathered a collection of the hosting industry’s sales and promotions, which you can browse in our Sales and Promos Roundup.
Finally, I’d love for you to check out something that we actually conducted last week. We had a great webinar, sponsored by LogicBoxes, on the ICANN accreditation process for registrars. And on Tuesday of this week, I posted the video version up to the WHIR Webinars archive. I highly recommend it.

Egypt Disconnected from Internet Access

By Justin Lee, January 28, 2011
A graph taken from Renesys' website which shows Egypt's sudden Internet downtime

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Egypt's Internet access was completely cut just after midnight Friday morning, according to a report by the Associated Press.
Internet security firm Renesys reported that Egypt's four main ISPs - Link Egypt, Vodafone/Raya, Telecom Egypt, Etisalat Misr -- all went offline, almost simultaneously, around 12:34 a.m. Friday.
More than 88 percent of Egyptian networks were inaccessible as of early Friday morning, local time, according to Internet traffic monitoring firm BGPmon.
The incident comes at a time when thousands of civilians have taken to the streets to protest against President Hosni Mubarak's nearly 30-year rule.
Many industry experts are surprised that a country with a thriving Internet economy has been able to completely remove itself from the Internet in an attempt to put an end to an overwhelming opposition.
But according to Jim Cowie, the CTO and a co-founder of Renesys, it would be impossible for a similar situation to happen in the United States because the US has significantly more ISPs and connection points to the Internet.
As a result, organizing a simultaneous shutdown of the Internet would too difficult a task.
"It can't happen here," said Cowie. "How many people would you have to call to shut down the US Internet? Hundreds, thousands maybe? We have enough Internet here that we can have our own Internet. If you cut it off, that leads to a philosophical question: Who got cut off from the Internet, us or the rest of the world?"
Experts said that there aren't many countries in the world that maintain all their central Internet connections in a single location or few enough locations that they can be simultaneously shut off.
The massive Internet outage has proved just how strong of a hold Egypt has over its ISPs to have the ability to cut off the country's Internet access all at once.
Other governments have previously censored and restricted Internet access to silence protests.
Last year China drew attention when it said it would censor Google search results in the country. And in 2009, Iran disrupted Internet service to prevent active protests over its controversial elections.
But unlike these cases, Internet access throughout the entire country was disabled in what appeared to be a coordinated move, accecting all devices including mobile phones to laptops.

Spam Accounts for 79 Percent of Email Traffic MessageLabs Report

By Nicole Henderson, January 25, 2011
A graph from MessageLabs shows spam trends by month
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Security firm Symantec (http://www.symantec.com/) has released its January 2011 MessageLabs Intelligence Report that reveals spam is responsible for 78.6 percent of all email traffic. According to the report released Tuesday, the volume of spam in circulation in January 2011 was 65.9 percent lower than that same period a year ago, when the spam rate was 83.9 percent of all email traffic.
Symantec finds that the recent decline of spam is the result of both a halt in the spam activities of three botnets -- Rustock, Lethic and Xarvester -- and "unrest among pharmaceutical spam-sending gangs".
"The closure of spam affiliate, Spamit, was partially responsible for the disruption to spam output," said MessageLabs Intelligence Senior Analyst, Paul Wood, Symantec.cloud. "However, there are likely other factors at work, such as consolidation and restructuring of pharmaceutical spam operations which has led to instability in the market likely to be exploited as a business opportunity by other spam gangs. We expect to see more pharmaceutical spam in 2011 as new pharmaceutical spam brands emerge and botnets compete for their business."
According to the press release, pharmaceutical spam experienced peak levels in May 2010 when up to 85 percent of spam was related to pharmaceutical products. In January 2011, pharmaceutical spam accounted for 59.1 percent of all spam. The report finds that this decline is the result of Spamit shutting down in October 2010.
In 2010, spam-sending botnets were responsible for 88 percent of global spam, falling to 77 percent by the end of the year. Rustock is the single, largest spam-sending botnet according to the report, previously being accountable for 47.5 percent of all spam or 44.1 billion spam emails a day.
"At various points during Rustock's history, the botnet has often exhibited irregular spamming patterns by sending huge volumes of spam before going quiet for several weeks at a time," Wood said. "But throughout 2010, its spamming pattern was more regular and it had been active non-stop until December 2010. Our investigation revealed no evidence of Rustock being disrupted in any way either by law enforcement or through other action."
The full report delves into trends in viruses, endpoint threats, phishing, Web security as well as geographical trends and vertical trends.
Canada approved an anti-spam law at the beginning of January. Though it received royal assent on December 15, Bill C-28, or the Fighting Internet and Wireless Spam Act, will not be enforced until approximately eight months from now. Violators of the law could face fines of up to $10 million.

Two Men Arrested in iPad Email Security Breach

By Justin Lee, January 24, 2011 A screen capture of the iPad, taken from the Apple website
Related Topics: security hackers apple at&t legal
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- A San Francisco man was arrested and charged last week in Newark, New Jersey for allegedly stealing the email addresses of 120,000 Apple iPad users, according to a report by SF Appeal.
Daniel Spitler, a 26-year old store detective at a San Francisco-based Borders bookstore, surrendered to FBI agents in Newark on Tuesday morning.
After making an initial appearance before a federal court in Newark, Spitler was released on $50,000 bail under the condition that he does not have access to computers during his bail sentence with the exception of fulfilling his job duties, said US attorney spokeswoman Rebekah Carmichael.
Spitler and 25-year-old Andrew Auernheimer of Fayetteville, Arkansas were both charged January 13 in a federal criminal complaint.
They were both charged with one count of conspiring to gain unauthorized access to computers and one count of fraudulently obtaining personal information, with each count carrying a maximum sentence of five years in prison if they are convicted.
The two defendants are accused of exploiting a former vulnerability in AT&T Communications security to hack into the company's servers and steal the emails of 114,067 people in June 2010.
In what was considered the worst security breach in Apple history, the hack compromised the email addresses of thousand of early iPad 3G subscribers, including politicians, celebrities, corporate executives and military personnel.
According to the complaint, the defendants allegedly used a script they called "Account Slurper" to attain the email addresses.
AT&T said it informed all iPad 3G customers of the flaw at the time and fixed the flaw shortly after.
US attorney Paul Fishman of New Jersey said last week there is no proof the two men used the emails for criminal actions, according to Carmichael, but recognized the severity of the charges.
Meanwhile, Auernheimer was arrested Tuesday morning in Fayetteville, where a US judge ordered that he be held in custody until a detention hearing on Friday, Carmichael said.
Written by FBI Agent Christian Schole, the complaint stated that Spitler and Auernheimer were members of a lose collective of hackers called Goatse Security.
The complaint cites excerpts of alleged online chats between the two men, where they appeared to consider selling the list of emails to spammers, exposing the vulnerability to the public, and making a profit on a potential decline in AT&T stock prices.
The complaint also alleges that Spitler and Auernheimer talked about getting rid of the stolen email addresses after Gawker first reported on the flaw.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt Steps Down, Cofounder Larry Page Takes Over

By Justin Lee, January 21, 2011
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Google (www.google.com) revealed in a conference call Friday that company CEO Eric Schmidt will step down from his position and assume the role of chairman while cofounder Larry Page moves up to CEO.
Schmidt said he and Google's founders are currently laying out the details of their management roles. He wrote about the move in a blog post on the company's blog:
"As executive chairman, I will focus wherever I can add the greatest value: externally, on the deals, partnerships, customers and broader business relationships, government outreach and technology thought leadership that are increasingly important given Google's global reach and internally as an advisor to Larry and Sergey [Brin]."
Schmidt said the restructuring in management will produce "even better success" for the company. However, many analysts are skeptical as to whether Page is ready to take on Google's top position.
Brin, Google's second co-founder, will change from co-founder and president of technology to just co-founder.
As a result, Brin will spend more time on strategic projects with a focus on new products.
The company also announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2010 and for the full year in the conference call, which saw an increase in revenues.
Google saw $29.3 billion in revenue for 2010, with a net income of about $8.5 billion. Meanwhile, its full-year diluted earnings-per-share were $26.31.
Page squashed recent speculation that its acquisition of carrier hotel 111 8th Ave. in New York City last month is Google's attempt to gain more control over Internet infrastructure.
He explained that the building was purchased because the company is in need of office space.
Schmidt has submitted an SEC filing to prepare a stock sale valued at about $334 million, which are set to take place over a one year period.
According to the filing, "Eric intends to sell approximately 534,000 shares of Class A common stock."

Russian Criminals May Be Hiding Behind Pro-WikiLeaks Attacks

Russian Criminals May Be Hiding Behind Pro-WikiLeaks Attacks

  • By Justin Lee, January 21, 2011
A screen shot of WikiLeaks.info
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Two Internet watchdog websites have discovered that Russian cybercriminals may be riding on the coattails of WikiLeaks and its hacker supporters, to stay online, according to a report by Security News Daily.
Researchers found WikiLeaks mirror site and an English-language forum for "Anonymous," a group of pro-WikiLeaks hackers, had both been established in areas of the Internet believed to be operated by Russian criminal organizations.
Malware tracking firm Spamhaus flagged Wikileaks.info on December 14 as being hosted by Webalta and Heihachi, which are both believed to be fronts for organized-crime units.
In a blog post written that same day, Spamhaus analyst Quentin Jenkins wrote that Heihachi was "highly involved in botnet command and control and the hosting of Russian cybercrime." Spamhaus was hit with a DDoS attack the day after the post.
On December 27th, Bank of America was also hit by a DDoS attack whose corresponding server was found to be located in Russia, according to McAfeeLabs, which means that Russian copycats may be behind these attacks and not Anonymous.
ÃŒt has yet to be determined whether the regular members of Anonymous are aware that their efforts have attracted foreign criminals.
Spamhaus recommends pro-WikiLeaks supporters to visit wikileaks.ch for a list of official WikiLeaks mirror sites and to avoid Anonymous message boards hosted by Webalta or Heihachi or contain an .ru domain.

Google Expands Lead in Search Advertising Market in 2010

January 19th, 2011 By: THN News
(The Hosting News) – Despite mounting competitive challenges from global and regional rivals, Google Inc. in 2010 expanded its leadership in the worldwide search advertising market, according to new IHS Screen Digest research.
Google is to release its fourth-quarter and full-year earnings on January 20. Based on results for the first three quarters of the year, it is estimated that Google’s full-year search advertising revenue in 2010 amounted to $25.4 billion, up 20.2 percent from $21.1 billion in 2009. This gave the company a market share of 83 percent in 2010, up from 81 percent in 2009. Google’s revenue growth was even stronger in display and mobile advertising. As a result, Google’s total revenues are expected to reach $28.9 billion in 2010, up 22.5 percent from 2009.
The attached table presents a preliminary IHS Screen Digest estimate of Google’s search ad market share in 2010.
“With the arrival of Microsoft’s Bing and rising competitive obstacles in fast-growing regions including China, Russia and South Korea, 2010 seemed like it might be the year that Google would surrender some of its dominance in the global search advertising market,” said Vincent Létang, senior analyst and head of advertising research for IHS. “However, even amid these challenges, Google managed to outgrow the overall market. What makes Google’s outperformance even more impressive is that it came during a year when the overall market revenue rose at an impressive double-digit percentage following a slowdown in 2009.”
The global search advertising market amounted to $30.4 billion in 2010, up 17 percent from $26.1 billion in 2009. This represents a strong acceleration after the slowdown of 2009, caused by the global advertising recession, when search growth declined by 11 percent in Europe and by 1.5 percent in the more mature U.S. market.
Google’s three pillars of growth
Google’s market-beating revenue growth stands on three sturdy pillars: search, video/display and mobile, Létang observed. The search pillar represents Google’s cash cow, fueling current revenues. In comparison, the video and display pillar generate short-term revenue growth, while the nascent mobile pillar provides long-term growth insurance.
Display revenue increased by an estimated 61 percent during 2010, playing a major role in Google’s market share performance. This area was boosted by the success of Google’s subsidiaries YouTube and DoubleClick.
On the mobile ad side, Google benefitted from revenue generated by the increasing popularity of the Android operating system and the company’s acquisition of AdMob.
Google’s rivals
Google’s assets allowed it to brush off several challenges in 2010.
One major challenge was the launch of Microsoft Corp.’s heavily promoted Bing and the search engine’s alliance with Yahoo. However, Google so far has lost little or no ground, as Bing is mostly growing at the expense of Yahoo Search.
But while Google remains the undisputed leader in most major markets, there are some notable exceptions. These include South Korea, Russia and, most importantly, China. In these markets, the dominant search engines belong to local operators, i.e., NHN, Yandex and Baidu. Owing to its dispute with the Chinese government in the first half of the year, Google has lost significant market share to Baidu in 2010, but finally decided to stay in the local search market that is already worth $1.6 billion and growing at an impressive 60 percent in 2010.
The ‘social’ threat
The only real challenge for Google actually may lurk in the rising tide of social media, rather than in competitive search engines.
“Microsoft and Facebook recently have deepened their own alliance in search, with Bing now providing sponsored links on Facebook searches and Bing to integrate social results powered by Facebook,” Létang said. “The association of Microsoft with Facebook and its 500 million-plus users is, in our view, a much bigger threat to Google’s dominance of the Internet than the Yahoo-Microsoft deal or the company’s legal issues. Social networking is the only major Internet trend where Google has failed to make its mark by either acquiring or developing strong products, despite semi-failed short-lived attempts.”
Létang noted that Facebook’s global advertising revenues were estimated at between $1.2 billion for the first nine months of 2010, and the company has now firmly established itself as a cost-effective marketing destination for many major brands. The main concern, from a Google perspective, is that by providing similar scalability and accountability along with more focused targeting, social marketing may become a viable alternative to both search engine marketing and display. For more information on this topic, see Létang’s new report, entitled: Search Soars Again.

Twitter Goes To Bat for Its Users’ Rights

Twitter Goes To Bat for Its Users’ Rights
January 11th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – On Friday, news reports indicated that the U.S. Gorvernment had recently given a court order demanding Twitter to turn over information about certain people connected to Wikileaks. Of the people accused were, founder of Wikileaks Julian Assange, Pfc. Bradley Manning, former Wikileaks spokesperson Birgitta Jonsdottir, and activist Jacob Appelbaum.
The court order was approved by a magistrate judge in Alexandria, Virgina where a federal grand jury is currently investigating the charges against Wikileaks relating to its acquisition and publishing of U.S. Government classified information. Along with the court order a gag order prevented Twitter from telling anyone, including the targets of the order, about the the existence of the order itself. While a common practice in law enforcement, gag orders leave the fatal flaw not allowing the accused to defend themselves in the court of law.
Twitter, in an important move, responded by challenging the gag order in court and then proceeded to inform the targets of the court order so that they themselves could oppose the order in court. This company and others have a policy of notifying users before responding to court orders or subpoenas which gives the accused time to dispute the order in court. The company’s decision to fight for its users comes as an unprecedented action by a massive technology firm. Other gag orders have been challenged but nothing on such a scale.
This action comes as a surprise with recent decisions from other large companies such as Paypal, Mastercard, Visa, and Bank Of America choose more oppressive political actions by banning donations to Wikileaks and Amazon.com. Although there are many implications in the release of the information, nothing is illegal by publishing classified documents.

GoDaddy Forces Pakistani Website To Remove Content

January 17th, 2011 By: THN News
(The Hosting News) – Go Dadddy, web hosting provider, has recently ordered the extraction of an article on one of it’s clients sites that was held in high controversy when it included the name of a former CIA agent in Pakistan. Right at the start of the new year the web hosting company declared an Ultimatum to PakNationalists, stating “either remove the content or they would move their website to another web host in 48 hours.”
Through a correspondance email later other on, Go Daddy delcared “please be aware that this decision [to remove the content] is final, and is not up for debate.” The article in question discussed the potential court case against the former CIA Islamabad Station Chief, Jonathan Banks. He was recently accused of being behind the illegal drone attacks on areas of Pakistan.
Since Banks was on a business visa in Pakistan he does not have diplomatic immunity from prosecution in this case. The CIA reported that they pulled the station chief from the Islamabad office after he received mulitple death threats. While the story did run on many media outlets internationally, Go Daddy only ordered the Pakistanian site to take down the article.
The article was removed from the PakNationalist’s Website on January 5th, but can still be viewed via Google cache.
“Please be aware that this decision [to remove the content] is final, and is not up for debate.”

Two Main Steps of Search Engine Optimization

(The Hosting News) –  Every online businessman aims for a superior rank of their website in the pages of the search engines and the best way to attain such a high rank is Search Engine Optimization or SEO. Search Engine Optimization of a website helps in proper promotion of the online business worldwide. When any website is published in the internet, it remains behind thousands of other websites having the similar type of information. Even the online businesses hold the same criteria. It is impossible to get a good online business in the internet world, if the site owners do not take proper steps to promote the website to the worldwide internet users. Millions of people surf the internet everyday and getting hold of these huge numbers of users the main aim of the site owners; although it is extremely difficult to achieve this goal. If the website gets properly optimized, then achieving success in the tough competition of the business world becomes quite easier. The impact of Search Engine Optimization is so powerful, that it can change the fate of the website owners, who are looking for good online business, in months.
Search Engine Optimization is a process which helps the websites to get a good rank in the search engines. The internet world has become so much over populated with the websites that website optimization has become a must need for every website looking for a good online business. Without proper Search Engine Optimization it is just impossible for any website to get superior ranks. For providing proper Search Engine Optimization to the websites, the site owners must hire an efficient and effective Search Engine Optimization company. Thousands of SEO companies have grown up all over the world and among them the Indian SEO companies have gained huge popularity and success. The Search Engine Optimization services provided by any SEO company in India are excellent and much better than that of those of the other countries. Moreover, the SEO company India provides these excellent services at minimal rate, which the Search Engine Optimization companies of other countries cannot provide. Complete optimization of a website takes a long time; almost 4 to 5 months and that period of time the websites are found to have the highest ranking in the search engines.
Optimization of a website consists of two main parts; on-site optimization and off-site optimization; both of which are extremely essential for better ranking of the websites in the pages of the major search engines like Google, Yahoo! or MSN. The main aim of any SEO company in India is to provide maximum volume of traffic to the websites. However, they cannot succeed in that aim directly; all they can do is help the websites in getting superior rank in the search engines. The better rank a website gets in the page rank of the search engines; the better is its chance to have a profitable online business. Most Indian Search Engine Optimization companies provide excellent optimization services and due to this they have gained huge name and fame among the website owners all over the world. Nowadays, most Indian as well as foreign website owners hire the Indian Search Engine Optimization companies to get their websites optimized.

SEO.com Predicts the Top 9 SEO Strategies for 2011

(Gawkwire.com) – The start of 2011 didn’t ring in shiny new strategies that will shock the online marketing world. However, specific tactics that emerged in 2010 will have a larger affect on the success of 2011 marketing campaigns.
"A lot of what worked in 2010 will carry over," said Nelson James, president of SEO.com. "But we are noticing a few trends that will build better links and produce more qualified leads."
SEO.com, an SEO firm, identifies the top nine strategies in 2011 (in no particular order):
1. Video Marketing –Boyd Norwood, SEO.com’s director of SEO, has been doing tests on visitors that come from video sites like Youtube, Vimeo and other sites. So far, the results have been surprising.
"The conversion rate of visitors from Youtube was about 20 percent higher than from the search engines," said Boyd Norwood, director of SEO for SEO.com. "Video will continue to be big in 2011."
2.    Social Impact (Ranking Factor) – 2010 was the year social media threw its weight around and affected search rankings. This will likely become more prevalent in the coming year. To increase rankings, SEO specialists will need to understand how to create valuable, shareable content and how to spread the word through various social sites.
"As the search engines put more emphasis on the popularity of links shared through Twitter and Facebook, social media will become a necessary tool for link building," said Nelson James, president of SEO.com
3. Blogging and Guest Blogging – Blogging continues to be an effective tool for thought leadership, link bait, and a way to leverage social media to drive website traffic and leads. Guest blogging benefits both the guest and the host. The host will get fresh content on its site while the guest blogger will received a link from the host. Both sides will be able to use each other’s resources to help share the blog and spread it online. It’s a win-win for both involved.
"Guest blogging will be huge this year," said Greg Shuey, SEO.com’s director of SEO. "It’s a great way to obtain quality links, and to extend your network."
4. Conversion Optimization – While this is not technically part of SEO, conversion optimization, the process of turning more visitors into paying customers, will determine the success of any SEO campaign. It will become even more valuable in the coming year as more become aware of the practice that tests different designs, call to actions and other details to find what converts the most website visitors into leads and sales.
"Before, marketers were only concerned with driving more traffic and being content with their conversion rate," said Josh Summerhays, conversion optimization manager for SEO.com. "Now, some of those marketers are figuring out that it’s cheaper and more effective to tweak their website to get more revenue out of the same amount of traffic."
"Conversion rate optimization will continue to be a difference maker for companies that embrace it," said Scott Miller, CEO of Vertster, a company that provides tools to help conversion optimization.
Tim Ash, author and CEO of SiteTuners.com, said in a message over Twitter: "Doing more with less is at the heart of conversion rate optimization and landing page optimization. Landing page efficiency is the new black."
5. Local Search Marketing – With 90 percent of shoppers searching Google before they head out the door, local Internet marketing and Google Maps are a must for any business trying to get people into their doors.
"Google has almost completely replaced the Yellow Pages as a place where people look for local businesses," said Lori Gilson, president of PRMarketing.com. "If you’re not on Google maps, you may as well not exist."
6. Mobile Marketing – With abundant smartphones, apps, widgets, location-based marketing through social media, discounts, coupons, QR codes, image and audio searches, and text message (SMS) marketing, mobile is poised to reach the big time. eMarketer’s "2011 Marketing Trends Survey" says 35 percent of businesses worldwide plan on increasing their mobile marketing spend. Performics projects that mobile search clicks could be greater than 16 percent of all Google search clicks.
"Mobile got big last year. It will get bigger this year. And will be huge the year after," said Ash Buckles, VP of client services for SEO.com. "Search marketers will need to embrace mobile technology and make their products and websites mobile friendly."
7. Pay Per Click Advertising (PPC) – This older Internet marketing strategy is still a key element of search marketing. PPC creates awareness and produces qualified traffic and leads. eMarketer’s survey says 41 percent of companies plan to increase both their search engine optimization and PPC spend in 2011.
"Some of the main benefits of PPC to an overall search marketing strategy is keyword research," said Todd Julien, president of PurePPC.com. "You can use PPC to help test what keywords deliver the highest quality of traffic to your site, while at the same time giving your business a boost in traffic."
8. Email Marketing – This old standby has made a strong comeback. eMarketer says 65 percent of businesses plan on increasing spending on e-mail marketing this year, which beats out the forecasted social media spend by 8 percent. Adage also reported that e-mail marketing provides a higher conversion rate than social media.
"E-mail is still a critical tool to drive leads and sales," James said. "It’s still the best way to remarket to those visitors that you’ve attracted to your site from SEO and PPC."
9. Content Marketing – Content marketing (e.g. infographics, blog posts, press releases, whitepapers and articles) increases SEO through natural link building, establishes thought leadership, makes companies more interesting on social media, and drives traffic and leads.
"The future of marketing is not buying ad space," said David Scoville, creative director for PRMarketing.com. "It’s in producing unique and interesting content and stories that attracts visitors and builds your brand. Companies must become journalists and storytellers."

Drop-Down Menu System Provides New Navigation Capabilities for Dotnetnuke

(Gawkwire.com) – Today PackFlash released their new Dotnetnuke Mega Drop-Down Menu System. This system provides administrable Mega Menus which dynamically list site pages, and allow full content edit capabilities. The system includes the menu building tool, sample DNN skins which demonstrate the tool, and an administration module for managing the menus.
What is a Mega Menu?
“Mega Menus” or “Mega Drop-Downs” are terms used to describe an increasingly popular form of menus for web sites. The interface consists of large link panels appearing when a user hovers over tabs in a menu bar. Whereas traditional drop-down menus consist of a single column of links to “child” pages which display directly under a “parent” page, the Mega Drop-Down presents a wider multi-column view so that more links are immediately visible to the user without need for hovering over a menu item to get a “fly out” of more sub-pages. This approach provides an omnipresent guide allowing the user to more easily find the content they seek.
There are several benefits to the mega menu approach. They are universally lauded as easier to use than the older styles of drop-downs. The ease-of-use even extends to mobile browsers which have an especially difficult time with traditional drop-down/fly-out navigation tools. The reason that they are easier to use is that a much broader set of options can be presented, and done in a way that graphically communicates the hierarchy the site. As a comparison, imagine cutting a 1-inch square in piece of paper and then trying to read a restaurant menu vs. being able to see the entire page unobstructed. The fuller view allows for the inclusion of explanatory text and imagery to help the user make a faster decision, and marketing messages can even be imparted. Taken together these benefits all add up to better enabling a site to serve its visitors, and for sites that have a lot of pages this approach is quickly becoming indispensible.
The PackFlash Mega Drop-Down Menu System:
PackFlash’s product manager for their Mega Drop-Down Menu System, Jason Lichon, explains how they came to create the product: “At PackFlash we’ve been working with DotNetNuke for 6 years, and for years we’ve extended the menu functionality beyond what DNN could do out of the box. It was relatively simple for us to extend our existing tools to enable an automated display of a site menu in the multi-column style. But, to really reach the potential of the mega format, we felt there needed to be administrative element, allowing more complex column layouts and content display. Our first test run of the concept was on our own site, http://www.PackFlash.com, and we quickly realized the power of this menu option. Not only was it a better way to navigate our site, but it actually enabled us to tell the story of our company and products along the way.”
There are several pieces that come together as part of the PackFlash Mega Menu system. First, there is a tool that automatically builds the menus according to the pages found on the DNN site. This tool is known as a “skin object” in the DotNetNuke world because it is deployed as part of the “skin” that acts as the template for a site’s pages, determining how the site “looks and feels.” This object essentially embeds the menu into all the pages of the site according to the rules and options that are selected. It must be emphasized that this tool produces mega menus in an automated fashion according to the hierarchy of the pages found on the site. It should also be noted that PackFlash is currently providing this DNN skin object for free to the DotNetNuke community.
Next there is an admin capability that allows administrators to enrich the menu with content and imagery and to control the columnar layout of the mega menus. This control over the layout is essential if the goal is to include as many links as possibly in a given menu, because the links will usually need to be re-organized to make the most effective use of space.
Finally, to bring it all together, PackFlash is providing 3 sample DNN skins to demonstrate how the system works. These samples can serve as the basis for developers to create their own custom-formatted menus.
Technical Capabilities and Considerations of the PackFlash Mega Drop-Down Menu System:
Menus can be driven completely by CSS, or enhanced with JQuery to provide cross-browser transitions. The sample skins show both approaches.
Menus can be styled via CSS to meet almost any requirement. Individual menu elements are given both generalized class names and unique IDs to be used as CSS selectors.
The mega menu system allows for the separation of the DNN Admin and Host menus, saving more space for main content menu.
Menus can be versioned and saved this allows you to change your menu content for a special promotion or season, and then revert back afterwards
The mega menu is SEO friendly, providing all interior links with every page of a DotNetNuke site
Menu HTML mark-up is WC3 compliant
Sample DNN skins demonstrate how to include drop shadows on the mega drop-downs if desired
Menus themes are portable to different DNN skins
The PackFlash Video module for DotNetNuke is for sale on Snowcovered.com (the marketplace for DotNetNuke extensions) at PackFlash Mega Drop-Down Menu System.

Digital Defense Receives Key Vulnerability Scanner Revalidation

(Gawkwire.com) – Digital Defense, Inc., a leading provider of information security governance, risk management, and compliance (GRC) solutions, today announced they have received formal revalidation from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for conforming to the Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP) standard.
The SCAP revalidation allows DDI to be included on NIST’s National Vulnerability Database (NVD) website listing, sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) National Cyber Security Division/US-CERT (United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team). The U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) requires that federal government agencies use SCAP-validated tools in order to remain in compliance with the Federal Desktop Core Configuration Initiative.
“The revalidation from NIST combined with our long-standing position as a PCI-Approved Scanning Vendor (PCI-ASV) means that DDI consistently meets the highest third party standards in the industry,” explained Larry R. Hurtado, president and CEO of Digital Defense. “When considering this revalidation in conjunction with DDI’s zero false positive initiative, clients benefit from the knowledge that they are using a tool that not only meets the rigors of the NIST validation process, but also provides them with a level of accuracy unsurpassed in the marketplace.”
The Frontline platform provides government and commercial clients with access to convenient tools such as theActive View™ Workflow Management module when they access the Frontline Client Portal. The system segregates vulnerabilities into five levels of severity, so clients can easily prioritize how they will address the remediation of those vulnerabilities. The reporting capability provided within the same portal, includes executive summary, technical detail, and trend reports, which make vulnerability management and oversight intuitive for personnel of all levels within client organizations.
