UK Web Host UK2 Launches Cloud Hosting Platform

By Justin Lee, February 22, 2011
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- UK Web hosting provider UK2 (www.uk2.net) announced on Monday it has launched a new cloud hosting platform.
The company says it has made many improvements and upgrades to the hosting packages across its product suite.
As a result, UK2 is currently offering Cloud Sites from £23.95 per month, Reseller Cloud from £59.95 per month and VPS Cloud packages from £9.95 per month.
The UK2 cloud allows servers and hosting packages to offer full redundancy, so in the event that a customer's website or server fails or crashes it instantly moves to a new piece hardware and continues to run.
In the event of a sudden surge in traffic, customers will have the option to add RAM to their cloud to handle the larger load of work.
"We are constantly rolling out new and improved products to keep up with the demand of technology," says Martin Baker, managing director at UK2. "Cloud hosting is one of those advancements in technology that will change the way we look at hosting. In the last few months we have seen a culmination of hard work and innovation bring to life a faster, more efficient and powerful cloud hosting platform which we have now implemented with immediate effect and is available on our website."
The new cloud offerings sees UK2 combining its resources and experiences from other company's within its group, namely VPS.net and Onapp, to "build an advanced cloud," according to the press release.

New Net Neutrality Laws Come Under Attack

The Hosting News) – House Republicans have recently attacked the new rules for broadband internet and criticized the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission for adopting them. Republicans have directly targeted the “net neutrality” regulations, which bans internet service providers from blocking or slowing down their services. They are also focused on the new laws in such areas as health care and the environment, which they find unnecessary and encumbering on the industry.

“Why would you put the government in charge of the Internet?” asked Rep. Fred Upton, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Democrat Julius Genachowski, also serving as FCC chairman, defended these new laws during the hearing stating the FCC “did the right thing” and that it is “pro-job and pro-investment” towards the U.S. economy.

Many democratic lawmakers stood on Mr. Genachowski’s defense. Some felt the FCC hadn’t gone far enough in regulating the internet. They stated that the agency should have a more firm and established handle on it own authority to control and regulate the internet by using rules designed for land-line phones.

“Without some clear rules of the road, large companies can carve up the Internet into fast and slow lanes, charging a toll for content and blocking innovators from entering the information superhighway,” says Representative Anna Eshoo, who deals with many Silicon Valley companies in her district.

Attempting to use various legislative venues, including an amendment that would budget legislation and stop funding to the FCC to implement these new rules, Republicans are attempting to stop the new net neutrality rules. Wednesday, Republican leaders in the House and Senate proposed a resolution that would overturn the rules using the Congressional Review Act. While this effort could win the congressional approval, it is unlikely to be enacted since it would need the approval of President Barack Obama, who is in favor of the FCC’s new net neutrality rules.

These new rules now prohibit phone and cable companies from blocking or slowing legal internet traffic and force internet service providers to provide their customers with more information about their services and traffic speeds.

Some feel that these rules could stale new investments in broadband networks by limiting providers’ management and profiting abilities. And even more question whether the FCC has any legal authority to enfore such changes, of which the courts will soon decide.

While some have their disagreements others feel that these rules are needed in order to prevent companies from exerting power over internet traffic.

Verizon Communications Inc. and MetroPCS Communications Inc. have both sued to overturn these new rules and more lawsuits are expected to show around spring this year. Last year, the D.C. Appeals Court ruled that the FCC had overstepped its authority when it reprimanded Comcast Corp. for intentionally slowing their subscribers’ internet download speeds.

PayPal Website and Payment APIs Suffer Brief Downtime

By Justin Lee, February 18, 2011
Netcraft's performance monitoring chart of PayPal.com website
Related Topics: paypal outages and downtime
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- PayPal (www.paypal.com) experienced an outage early Friday morning leading to a downtime of more than an hour.
According to PayPal's Developer Network, the outage began at 12:11 am PST, and was eventually resolved by 1:23 a.m. PST.
However, PayPal said it did not have an estimated time for resolution during the outage, which appeared to block customers from their accounts.
The company said that international PayPal sites including the UK and Spain websites may have slowed down performance until 2 a.m. PST.
According to a report by Netcraft, PayPal has regularly scheduled maintenance windows every Thursday and Friday from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. PST.
However, these routine checks seldom lead to any noticeable downtime, and as Netcraft points out, Friday's outage moved beyond the time frame of the maintenance checks.
The company also experienced issues with its payments API, which affected many online retailers like PayPal's parent company, eBay.
At 12:52 a.m. PST, eBay released this statement: "EBay [sic] is currently experiencing checkout problems" and "community members may see errors or timeouts when attempting to pay for an item. We are working on the problem and apologize for the inconvenience."
In its live status update on the PayPal X Developer Network, PayPal said its support team could not find any alternative work-around to resolving the issue.
PayPal's official blog also experienced some performance issues back in December when it became the target of a DDoS attack after the company decided to permanently restrict WikiLeaks account.

Level 3 Provides Content Delivery Network Services for FBI Website

By Justin Lee, February 15, 2011
A screen shot of the FBI's main website

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Content delivery network servies provider Level 3 Communications (www.level3.com) announced on Tuesday it has been awarded a contract to provide CDN services for the FBI's (www.fbi.gov) main website through the agency's prime contract holder Human Touch (www.humantouchllc.com).
The value of the contract has not been disclosed. In 2010, the FBI awarded Human Touch with a $4.9 million, four-year contract to provide technical resources needed to host its new website using a Web 2.0 framework.
Under this contract, Level 3 will provide CDN services to improve the site's performance, including loading content more quickly, improving traffic monitoring and improving security while reducing any related costs.
Level 3 will provide caching services for the website and local home pages for the FBI's 56 field offices throughout the US as well as its website for citizens to report suspected terrorism or criminal activity.
The company says its CDN is designed to help customers control all aspects of the delivery, from start to completion.
Level 3's Internet backbone includes a content delivery platform for a highly scalable system, protecting customer websites from denial-of-service attacks.
The website's private cloud infrastructure ensures that the FBI maintains its private information stored on its server behind the firewall.
"The FBI maintains their data on their own server, they handle their own website creation, and they decide when and what to update," says Edward Morché, senior vice president of federal markets for Level 3. "The public looks to the FBI's website for timely, important information, which is why it is critical for the website to be fast and easy to navigate, easy to manage and cost-effective — and that’s exactly what we delivered."

US Government Mistakingly Shuts Down 84K Websites in Domain Seizure

By Justin Lee, February 16, 2011 Visitors to the seized domains were met with an image saying the domain had been taken by Homeland Security
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The Department of Justice and Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (www.ice.gov) announced this week it has made a significant error in the act of seizing several domains in connection with counterfeit products and child pornography.
But according to a report by TorrentFreak.com, one of the seized domains belongs to a free DNS provider, and that 84,000 websites were inaccurately accused of containing links to child pornography material.
The move is a part of ICE's "Operation Save Our Children" campaign under its Cyber Crimes Center.
As in the case of previous domain seizures, such as the one last November, the agency convinced a District Court judge to sign a seizure warrant for the domains, then ordered domain registries to forward those domains to a server that hosts a disclaimer.
Beginning last Friday, the message on the affected websites read: "Advertisement, distribution, transportation, receipt, and possession of child pornography constitute federal crimes that carry penalties for first time offenders of up to 30 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, forfeiture and restitution."
During this process, mooo.com, which belongs to DNS service provider FreeDNS, was seized, which included the wrongful seizure of 84,000 subdomains.
The owner of FreeDNS released this statement via its website: "Freedns.afraid.org has never allowed this type of abuse of its DNS service. We are working to get the issue sorted as quickly as possible."
A couple of days later the agency and domain registrars reversed the seizure and one by one, the subdomains were directed to their original websites. It then took an additional three days before the images were removed ompletely.
The majority of the affected subdomains are personal sites and small businesses websites. It is still unclear as to how the error occurred in the first place, or who is behind it.
The Department of Homeland Security did not mention the error in its recent press release about the seizure of 10 other domain names.
Earlier this month, Oregon Senator Ron Wyden sent a letter to the head of ICE that questioned the agency's past seizures of domain names.

Web Host Go Daddy Introduces Premium DNS Service

By Justin Lee, February 14, 2011
A screen shot of Go Daddy's promotional video for its premium DNS service
Related Topics: new products domains go daddy
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting and domain services provider Go Daddy (www.godaddy.com) announced on Monday it has introduced Premium DNS service, providing a faster, more reliable and more secure DNS resolution.
Through Go Daddy's DNS routing, global Anycast network, traffic is balanced across multiple Go Daddy data centers throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, to eliminate a single point of failure and to route DNS activities for maximized performance.
"Go Daddy customers not only take pride in their online presence, but many also depend on it for their business," says Go Daddy CEO and founder Bob Parsons. "With the customization tools we provide through Premium DNS, customers can easily tailor their DNS functionality and -- it comes with a 99.999 percent uptime guarantee!"
Premium DNS users are provided with options such as creating a vanity name and custom DNS Zone templates for their domain name's server, as well as adding multiple users to one account.
Customers also have the option to perform bulk imports, exports and updates to multiple domain names at the same time.
But perhaps the most significant option is that customers can easily enable DNSSEC, a security tool that authenticates DNS records when an Internet user tries to visit their domain name.
Assigning a specially-encrypted key to validate the DNS lookup can help prevent traffic from being diverted to a malicious computer and compromised, as part of an Internet attack.
Go Daddy's Premium DNS offers a "one-click" solution to set up DNSSEC, which simplifies the complex process.
The company's new DNS service comes a week after security solutions provider Comodo acquired DNS.com, launching Comodo Authoritative DNS Service as a result of the acquisition.

Fasthosts Online Back-up service fulfils an important requirement for all businesses in protecting valuable business data and files from loss or corruption.  A common deterrent for businesses looking to protect their data can be the required investment in hardware.  Fasthosts’ solution resolves this by using a highly scalable ‘cloud-based’ model to deliver fast and highly secure back-up on demand, which works alongside their existing on-premise infrastructure.  Furthermore, a highly intuitive user interface helps small business users to integrate data protection measures easily into their workflows.
Storage capacity is selected according to requirements and can be increased dynamically from 10 Gigabytes to a massive 1 Terabyte.  The user is not limited to specific hardware for utilising the service and can up- or downscale at any time and therefore only pays for their required usage.  All data back-ups are uploaded over SSL to provide a secure transmission, and the data is stored encrypted within the secure data centre.  Fasthosts Online Back-up uses software to analyse files marked for back-up so only incremental changes are uploaded.  By sending only changes to files, the amount of data transfer is significantly reduced, meaning lower ADSL bandwidth usage costs and time is saved.
Scheduled automatic back-ups will upload changes and new file versions on a regular basis and so provide continuous protection.   Better protection for business critical data means that business continuity can be enhanced.  The system is designed to be highly efficient – users can restore individual files only, as well as retrieve historical versions of files.  All data is stored within the company’s state-of-the-art UK data centres, where all operations are protected against compromise by hardware, power or network failures or site access.
Fasthosts’ service works with desktop computers, laptops, dedicated or virtual servers, and so compliments both on-premise and hosted solutions already in place.   Full disk imaging options and the ability to restore from any internet-connected computer enables the user to regain their data swiftly and easily.  The solution supports Windows operating systems, SQL and Exchange back-ups and has minimal system requirements.  The dynamic nature of the solution means a small business or individual can benefit from the full set of system features whilst paying for a modest data quota, and gradually increase their capacity as and when it is needed.
Steve Holford, Marketing Director, Fasthosts Internet Ltd., said “Our new online back-up service can protect a business from the significant disruption and financial loss that can occur should the worse happen to their on-premise hardware.  Fast transfer and automatic scheduling for back-ups now makes data protection effortless.  Businesses of all sizes are now able to see that cloud-based services can lead them to become more dynamic and resilient”.
All Online Back-up packages feature the same high level of quality, security and up to 100Mbps connectivity.  Fasthosts Online Back-up pricing comprises 10GB for £10/month+VAT, 25GB for £15/month+VAT, 50GB for £20/month+VAT, 100GB for £30/month+VAT, 250GB for £45/month+VAT, 500GB for £70/month+VAT, 750GB for £95/month+VAT, and 1TB for £115/month+VAT.  Customers are offered flexible contract options and discounts for annual payment.

Chinese Hosting Company Named In Cyber Attacks On U.S. Oil Companies

February 14th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – Song Zhiyue, a technician for the website hosting company Science and Technology Internet, in northeaster Shandong province of China was recently named by McAfee in relation to attack against U.S. oil and gas companies over the past years. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Zhiyue stated over the phone “What? You’re sure it’s my company?”

McAfee’s report found that hackers broke into computers of these companies in the Unites States, Taiwan, Greece, and Kazakhstan and regularly stole private information about bidding, operations, and the company’s finances. Their was no information regarding China’s state owned oil companies benefitting from the attacks or information received.

Although McAfee security firm did not name Zhiyue as one of the hackers, the report did state that they found him acting as a conduit to the hacking by either being “aware or has information that can help identify at least some of the individuals.” According to the McAfee report, Zhiyue claimed that he heard of the hackers in China targeting oil companies in the U.S. He continued to say that his company rents server space to hundreds of hackers.

Our company alone has a great number of hackers…I have several hundred of them among all my customers,” quoted the Hosting Owner. He openly revealed that hackers using his company’s services had an estimated 10,000 “meat computers” controlled remotely with his knowledge. While he did admit that these activities may not be right, he ensure that he had never been contacted by the Chinese authorities.

China is currently considered the hotspot of internet crime. China’s government maintains that they have no part with cyber-spying, however attacks such as the one on the British Foreign Office may suggest otherwise. Other intelligence reports leaked earlier this month from France accuse China of widespread industrial espionage, The reason behind Zhiyue’s change in confession currently remains a mystery. The report also concludes that the hackers mentioned may not be Chinese and instead are routing their activities through computers in China to conceal their identity.
