MessageLabs Study Sees Rise in Malicious Spam Attachments

By Liam Eagle, April 18, 2011
A chart from MessageLabs illustrating a big decline in the volume of spam emails

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- According to reports posted last week on the MessageLabs Intelligence blog, operated by the Symantec (http://www.symantec.com/) unit, the organization’s scanning has seen a rise in malicious attachments accompanying spam email

The post on the MessageLabs blog says that while spam email traffic in general fell dramatically, as expected, following the shutdown of the massive Rustock botnet in March, the company’s spam traps saw a big increase in the volume of spam data hitting its spam traps, in spite of the declining number of emails.

The reason turned out to be an increase in the number of emails with .zip file attachments being sent out by the Cutwail botnet, meaning a big increase in the average size of each email, in terms of data. That volume of spam data has been fairly well sustained since March 26, which suggests a bit of a shift in spamming tactics.

According to the post, the emails are all variations of a general subject – that the recipient missed the delivery of a package, and must open the attachment and print it out to bring to the delivery company’s facility.

Inside the zip file is an executable file that will infect machines with variants of the Bredolab malware, which would enable the attacker to control the victim’s machine – most likely making it part of the botnet and using it to distribute further attacks.

In another recent post, MessageLabs indicated that PDF format files are also becoming popular resources in document-based attacks.

Google Drops Ancient Video Service

April 18th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – On Friday, Google announced the closure of its online video streaming service Google Video. The move comes as no surprise to analysts. In fact, some see it as long overdue as Google also owns the massively popular video-streaming site Youtube.

Google Video premiered in 2005 as Google’s answer to competing with YouTube. However, Google shortly acquired Youtube after Google Video’s creation.

While Google Video’s closure is news, it appears that it’s been in the making for some time. The site stopped letting users upload videos as far back as May of 2009.

The site is encouraging users to save or move their videos to Youtube. For now, an additional feature lets users save video content to their hard drives. In an email sent to users, Google stated, “We’ve always maintained that the strength of Google Video is its ability to let people search videos from across the web, regardless of where those videos are hosted”. Google also emphasized that the move will allow the company to focus on the further advancement of worldwide video searches.

A large factor behind the service’s shutdown is news of Google’s most recent emphasis on Youtube. Google is said to be looking to invest up to one-hundred million dollars towards creating original content for the popular video-streaming site.
Streaming of videos using the service is expected to end on April 29th. The last day to download videos from the service will be the 13th of May.

Payment Processors May be Key in US Shutdown of Poker Sites

By Liam Eagle, April 18, 2011

An image of the notice posted in place of the shut-down Poker sites as of publishing

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- As has been extensively reported over the weekend, the US government shut down three of the world’s largest online poker sites, in a massive case alleging billions of dollars in money laundering and bank fraud. According to several reports appearing over the weekend, payment processing firms involved in the transactions may have been involved in helping federal prosecutors build their case.

Over the weekend, it was widely reported that the websites of Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars and Absolute Poker, three of the largest online poker sites, had been seized by the US Department of Justice, along with bank accounts (74 of them, in 14 countries) belonging to the companies and their founders. Reports said the founders of the sites could face up to 20 years in jail if found guilty of breaching US anti-gambling and money laundering laws.

While most of the hosting industry impact of the news is related to the impact of the businesses as customers – all of them are massive web applications, but all of them are hosted offshore.

In shutting down the sites, the DOJ alleges that the poker sites engaged in massive and elaborate bank fraud in finding ways to accept the payments from payers, illegal in the United States. The alleged acts involved tricking, or effectively bribing banks into accepting the payments, often disguised as payments to online retails of golf balls, jewelry or other goods.

A report appearing in the Australian publication the Courier-Mail suggests that payment processors involved with the online gambling business in its early years may have been key in helping the FBI to build its case against the poker sites.

The report specifically singles out Daniel Tzvetkoff of Brisbane, who had founded (along with a few others) a payment processing firm called Intabill, based out of the British Virgin Islands.

Tzvetkoff, says the Courier-Mail, was charged last April with money laundering, bank fraud and conspiracy for Intabill’s role in processing $543 million in illegal gambling earnings.

Google Could Face Antitrust FTC Investigation

April 5th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – A large antitrust investigation of Google might be set to be conducted by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. The decision depends on whether or not the Justice Department approves Google’s likely 700 million dollar acquisition of ITA Software Inc., a travel industry corporation.

Google currently dominates the web search industry and some have alledged that the company provides an unfair monopoly. Without naming Google specifically, FTC Commissioner Thomas Rosch stated his support last month for investigating top internet search engines. Shares in the company fell 3 percent Tuesday as fears over the possible investigation increased.

The possible antitrust investigation could be similar to the Justice Department’s 1998 investigation of Microsoft. The European Commission previously opened up an antitrust investigation into Google in November of last year. Without specifically identifying possible litigation by the FTC, Google released a statement defending its business practices and stated that “competition is one click away on the Internet”.

Hackers Gain Access To WordPress Servers

(The Hosting News) – WordPress is reviewing data logs and looking to patch up its security after the site was breached by hackers on Tuesday.

The hackers gained access to the site’s servers. Automatic, the company that runs the popular blogging site determined that the breach was low level. However, the company says there’s still a chance that the site’s source code was copied.

In a statement released on the site’s official blog, WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg noted that while most of the coding on WordPress is open source, there is still sensitive data available. Such data could go a long way in helping hackers’ motives. While it remains unclear what specific information was taken, data access could provide the hackers with premium customers’ passwords for twitter accounts and Facebook. Hackers may have also accessed customers’ API keys.
Premium customers that could be affected include such heavyweights as NASA, Flickr, and Yahoo. Sites that host WordPress on their own servers should not be affected by the breach.

Mullenweg stated, “Our investigation into this matter is ongoing and will take time to complete”. The site also urged premium customers to make their passwords stronger to help combat potential breaches.

The security breach is the latest in a line of attacks that have affected the popular blogging host site. WordPress most recently suffered a security breach last month from a DDoS attack that temporarily brought down its data centers. A different attack occurred in 2009 when hackers gained access by creating secret administrator accounts. WordPress provides hosting to nearly 18 million users.

Email Security Firm eleven Reports Spam Levels Decreased 36 Percent in March

A chart shows the top spam topics in the eleven report

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Email security provider eleven (www.eleven.de) announced on Wednesday that overall spam levels in March were 36 percent below spam levels in the previous month.

The eleven email security report found that the shutdown of Rustock botnet by US authorities with Microsoft on March 16, 2011, led to the reduction in spam levels. Within 24 hours of the shutdown, spam levels fell by 60 percent.

Though spam saw a decrease in March, the level of malware sent via email increased significantly. According to eleven, the amount of malware-infected emails doubled in March compared to the previous month.

Apparently, this is an expected "reaction to botnet takedowns, where spammers attempt to make up for lost infrastructures by sending mass quantities of Trojans." According to eleven, Trojans were primarily camouflaged as notifications from courier services.
eleven says the decline in spam is the first time that it had fallen below the 90 percent mark since 2009.

The report says that the US is the top third spam source country, with India in the lead and Russia in second place.

February and March 2011 saw an increase in targeted phishing campaigns against banking customers. Current events were also used for deceptive objects including the earthquake and tsunami in Japan where spammers set up fraudulent donation sites.

The complete report can be found on the eleven website.
Last month, eleven released its annual survey which found over half of German IT managers say spam levels have considerably increased over the past year.

Google and Microsoft Fight Over FISMA Approval

April 12th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – On Tuesday, David Howard of Microsoft alleged that the U.S. Government had rejected Google’s claim that some of its apps had been certified under the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA). Despite this claim, Google had thoroughly stated that its apps had FISMA approval. Howard (Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel) contended that this would mean that Google had been guilty of falsely advertising.

Google quickly responded that the particular government apps that Howard made reference to were not the ones Google had advertised as FISMA certified. Instead, Google clarified that the government had approved Apps Premier and not the cloud-based suite. However, the company is currently developing newer government apps and will seek FISMA approval upon completion.

As of now, it appears that the larger more secure Google Apps for the government has yet to receive FISMA approval while some of the company’s smaller apps have. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s business standard app has not received FISMA approval either. Such approval means that a particular app has been certified by the U.S. government as secure to use.

India Intends to Block XXX Domain

By Liam Eagle, March 29, 2011

ICM Registry's messaging around the new .xxx TLD has to do with responsibility

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- According to reports released Monday, the Indian government has said it intends to block the .xxx domain, following the news last week that ICANN had announced its own intentions to work with the ICM Registry to enable the creation of a top-level domain specifically for adult content.

At the news of the domain’s approval, and during the many-years-long buildup to that point, companies operating in the online adult industry had expressed concerns that they would be “ghettoized” by being forced onto the new domain (though no plans exist to push content off the .com domain), and that it would make it easy for governments to arbitrarily block content.

While one of the stated objectives of the .xxx domain was to make it easier for parents (or people who want to for whatever other reason) to block pornographic content, India’s move goes a little more toward validating the concern, among those in the business, that .xxx is a move against adult content.

An article in the Economic Times quoted a senior Indian official at the ministry of IT.

"India along with many other countries from the Middle East and Indonesia opposed the grant of the domain in the first place, and we would proceed to block the whole domain, as it goes against the IT Act and Indian laws," said the official. "Some people have said that segregation is better, and some countries allow it. But for other nations, transmission and direct distribution of such content goes against their moral and culture."

Experts say the Indian government, and others, have a harder time blocking content (adult or otherwise) on the .com domain, or on their local country-code TLD, without laws in place to govern that sort of thing.

Georgian Woman Accidentally Cuts Off Armenia's Internet

By Justin Lee, April 07, 2011

An image of a fiber-optic cable

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) –- A 75-year-old Georgian woman accidentally severed an underground fiber-optic cable on March 28, leading to a massive Internet outage in all of Armenia, large parts of Georgia, and some areas of Azerbaijan.

The elderly lady was digging for copper cable close to Georgian capital Tbilisi to sell as scrap when her spade sliced through the Internet cable belonging to the Georgian railway network.

A Western European-based system monitoring discovered the damaged link and immediately issued a security team to the loaction, where the woman was arrested.

Taking unused copper cables for the purpose of selling as scrap is a common practice in the former Soviet Union.

Since Georgia provides 90 percent of Armenia's Internet, the damaged cable resulted in an Internet outage that lasted up to five hours for some 3.2 million Armenians.

The unidentified woman, who has since been nicknamed "the spade-hacker", is facing charges of damaging property with a potential prison sentence of up to three years.

The woman has since been released "on account of her old age" but will likely face more questioning, according to a spokesman for Georgia's interior ministry.

Up to 1.5 Million Websites Hit with Mass-Injection Attack

By Justin Lee, April 04, 2011

A pop-up window for fake anti-virus software, Windows Stability Center

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) –- Security firm WebSense (www.websense.com) discovered an attack last week where malware writers used website flaws to inject malicious scripts into hundreds of thousands of websites.

The attack came in the form of an injected domain called LizaMoon, which WebSense says is a part of a larger attack that redirects users to a website that dupes them into downloading rogue anti-virus software called Windows Stability Center.

WebSense says that LizaMoon uses SQL injection to upload malicious script to compromised websites.

Other domains have since followed LizaMoon in these injection attack, and WebSense has posted a full list of these URLs on its website.

On March 28, WebSecurity initially found 28,000 URLs had been compromised. However, the security firm later discovered a total of 226,000 compromised URLs, many of which were iTunes URLs. Apple has since rid these URLs of the malicious code.

At the time of this article's posting, a Google Search shows that there are well over 1.5 million infected URLs.

However, this number may not be entirely accurate, as WebSense says that a Google Search is an inaccurate metric since it shows unique URLs and not unique hosts.

As the attack continues to make its rounds across the Internet, WebSense is warning users not to install any web-based anti-virus software that claims your computer is full of bugs.

In another attack reported last week, the Oracle-owned MySQL.com website was compromised by two Romania-based hackers, who published usernames and passwords for some users of the site.Article Source http://www.thewhir.com/web-hosting-news/040411_Up_to_15_Million_Websites_Hit_with_Mass_Injection_Attack permits to repubish here

Mozilla Regrets Silence Over Stolen SSL Certificates

By Nicole Henderson, March 28, 2011

A screenshot of Mozilla's add-on website

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Open-source organization Mozilla (www.mozilla.org) regrets keeping mum about stolen SSL certificates last week, according to a report Friday by Computerworld. Hackers stole certificates from some of the Internet's largest sites, including Google, Skype, Microsoft, Yahoo and its own add-on website.

Late last year, a database of 44,000 inactive Mozilla usernames and passwords was publicly disclosed by Mozilla.

According to the report, on March 15 attackers used a valid username and password to acquire nine SSL certificates from a Comodo certificate reseller.

The certificates were for Microsoft's Hotmail, Google's GMail, Skype, Yahoo Mail and Mozilla's Firefox add-on site.

Comodo came out with the news of the breach on March 23, but Mozilla was informed sometime between March 15 and March 23, according to the report. None of the browsers went public with the hack until March 22.

Computerworld says Google patched Chrome on March 17, but Mozilla and Microsoft issued updates to Firefox and Windows on March 22 and March 23, respectively.

"In hindsight, while it was made in good faith, this was the wrong decision. We should have informed Web users more quickly about the threat and the potential mitigations as well as their side-effects," Mozilla said in the report.

It was suspected that the Iranian government was involved in the attack and theft, and "speculated that the certificates were stolen to set up fake sites where authorities could identify activists and monitor their email and other digital communications," according to the report.

"By keeping this quiet for eight days, Comodo and others put lives at risk," Jacob Appelbaum, researcher at the University of Washington's Security and Privacy Research Lab said in a statement. "[Iranian activists] were completely unable to protect themselves during that time. Users should have had this information sooner."

"This was a gigantic failure on Mozilla's part," Appelbaum told Computerworld last week. "They believe disclosure will harm users. That's bogus."

Google Makes a Move on SMB Web Hosting with Free Offering

By Liam Eagle, March 30, 2011

A screencap from the Canada Get Your Business Online website, launched by Google

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Is this the big Google push into shared hosting that web hosts have feared for years? According to several reports surfacing Tuesday, the search engine giant has launched a new program called “Canada Get Your Business Online,” offering small businesses a free domain name, web hosting space and a coupon for $100 worth of AdWords credit.

The company announced similar programs in Australia and in the UK. It has yet to launch a program in the United States, but one can only imagine that is either in the works, or on the horizon, pending the success of the current offering.

In Canada, the offering is delivered via the website gybo.ca, and appears to be a partnership between Google Canada, the Royal Bank of Canada, Rogers Communications, the .ca registry, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, website design tool Yola, and small business development firm Silver Lining.

An item that might be comforting to hosting providers, Google isn’t going to be doing the hosting itself.

The hosting will be provided by Yola (www.yola.com), a website builder and hosting company based in San Francisco. The GYBO package is free for 12 months, after which Yola’s standard website pricing applies – $99.99 (US) per year for the lesser of its two paid options.

For hosting providers, there’s some opportunity tied to the obvious threat – in an interview with the Financial Post, Google Canada country director Chris O’Neill shared the company’s estimate that of the approximately 2.2 million small businesses in Canada, less than one million have a web presence.

In an Angus-Reid study commissioned by Google, 71 percent of small business owners said they thought they should have a website, but many said they lacked the expertise to set one up, and the time to learn.

Google’s offering seems squarely aimed (not just from the name) at those small businesses that have yet to establish any online presence at all, which means that, for now, the company isn’t after the existing business of shared hosting providers.

For Google, the value is fairly evident. With each new website created (at the cost of a domain name and basic hosting), the company creates a new AdWords customer with the potential to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars a year promoting that website.

In the end, this could prove beneficial to the hosting competition. Google has the marketing muscle and name recognition to get a significant chunk of those currently-offline small businesses online, but it (and even Yola) may not ultimately have the kind of support structure these customers want.

There may be an opportunity to win over these new hosting customers with your support. And the small business hosting market may find new customers looking for alternatives when their 12 free months expire.

37 Percent of Consumers Won't Shop at Businesses with Poor Websites

The Hosting News) – A total of 46 percent of British consumers have cancelled plans to spend with a small business after finding a poor quality website, according to research released today by 1&1 Internet Ltd, www.1and1.co.uk, a global leader amongst web hosts. From a study of more than 1800 UK adults, 37 percent have walked away completely whilst a further 9 per cent have opted to spend less as a direct result. Many consumers feel that small business websites today are mostly unattractive and often contain errors. Whilst 1 in 3 consumers are willing to provide valuable feedback to business owners, a further study of small firms finds that half have never asked clients about their experiences of using their website.

The majority of UK businesses have now taken steps to launch a website and battle for valuable online visibility. However, 1&1’s ’2011 Digital High Street Audit’(1) finds worryingly low levels of consumer satisfaction with the small business websites available to them. The risk to firms from providing a bad online experience is clear – 49 per cent of consumers believe that a bad website makes a worse impact than a business having no website at all. This conclusion has led 37 percent to walk-away from companies completely, in favour of using a competitor. An additional 9 per cent of Britons have found themselves reducing their spend with small companies as a direct result of being deterred by a poor company website.

Oliver Mauss, CEO 1&1 Internet Ltd. said, “Research shows that keeping an ugly or badly functioning website online can comprise a risk to sales revenue. Consumers have ever higher expectations, and it is essential that every company website inspires confidence. Businesses that invest carefully in their web experience will see higher levels of customer spend, retention and referral”.

Many business websites have not evolved as they should have in recent years. One third of consumers surveyed (34 percent) believe that in general, the small business websites they use are “tired” and “unimpressive”, and 41 percent frequently find errors such as typos or broken URLs. It is thus unsurprising that a further study of 480 UK firms(2) finds that 50 percent have never asked their customers for feedback about their website. However, many owners are aware that they have website problems. 66 per cent of companies surveyed admit that they struggle to maintain an attractive website, with the most common pain-point being the sourcing of fresh content (38 percent). 30 percent have been ‘reluctant’ or ‘embarrassed’ to recommend their website to their customers, at least once, because they knew of faults.

Significantly, many British consumers are keen to help business owners create a more satisfying online experience. Given the facility for providing feedback, 33 percent of shoppers would provide a review or recommendation for improving a small business website. Hence, companies should add a feedback form to their website, or set up an email address for collecting valuable user-comments.

The data suggests the outlook for online spending remains strong. Two thirds of consumers plan to maintain their level of online spending from 2010, and 22 percent foresee an increase in the number of purchases they will make online. Thus, UK businesses can be reassured that investments made to improve their websites can positively impact their bottom line.
Mauss added, “Firms must not shy-away from addressing their website’s weaknesses. For all business owners, customer feedback can be a hugely effective weapon for ensuring that the web is performing for them”.

MySQL Website Hit by SQL Injection Attack

By Liam Eagle, March 29, 2011

The MySQL.com website, one of the domains compromised in the attack

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- According to several reports appearing Monday, the MySQL.com website, belonging to Oracle, was compromised over the weekend by a pair of Romania-based hackers, who published usernames and passwords for some users of the site.
The hackers calling themselves “TinKode” and “Ne0h” took credit for the attack, saying they had used a SQL injection attack to access a list of domains that included mysql.com, mysql.fr, mysql.de, mysql.it and www-jp.mysql.com.

A report posted Tuesday on eWeek said the same two hackers had compromised several subdomains of Sun.com, another Oracle property. The article links a blog on Baywords, operated by TinKode, which provides more details on the compromised sites.

Following the original attack, the hackers posted a dump of stolen information on Pastebin, including passwords for a group of MySQL database users on the server, as well as the admin passwords for the corporate blogs of two former employees, Robin Schumacher and Kaj Arno. Neither blog had been recently updated.

Oracle acquired both MySQL.com and Sun.com in its acquisition of Sun Microsystems in 2009. The company has reportedly yet to issue any public statement on the compromise of either domain.

Facebook and Founder Zuckerberg Sued for $1 Billion

April 1st, 2011 By: THN News

The Hosting News)
Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook and Facebook have a suit filed against them by Larry Klayman. Klayman is the founder of Judicial Watch and Freedom Watch and claims “”While Facebook has accomplished a lot of good, it can, as in this instance, be used for nefarious and evil purposes. Defendants Zuckerberg’s and Facebook’s callous and greedy actions in not taking down the page, but willfully allowing it to stay up for many days, has caused huge damage, for which they must be held accountable, so as to prevent this from ever happening again. They must be not only enjoined but also hit in their purse, which is where they understand matters best. Apparently, the ethically compromised Zuckerberg has no conscience or sense of right or wrong, as depicted recently in the award winning film “Social Network.” according to a press release from Standard Newswire http://www.standardnewswire.com/news/820276117.html.

Although the page in questioned, calling for a third intifada against Israel’s Jewish people was removed, Klayman felt the page wasn’t removed quickly enough and considers similar pages and related sites will reappear on Facebook.

According to Techcrunch, Facebook declined comment but released the following statement.
“The Page, The Third Palestinian Intifada, began as a call for peaceful protest, even though it used a term that has been associated with violence in the past. In addition, the administrators initially removed comments that promoted violence. However, after the publicity of the Page, more comments deteriorated to direct calls for violence. Eventually, the administrators also participated in these calls. After administrators of the page received repeated warnings about posts that violated our policies, we removed the Page.

We continue to believe that people on Facebook should be able to express their opinions, and we don’t typically take down content that speaks out against countries, religions, political entities, or ideas.

However, we monitor Pages that are reported to us and when they degrade to direct calls for violence or expressions of hate–as occurred in this case–we have and will continue to take them down.”
