(The Hosting News) – Leaders of some of the world’s largest web hosting companies are meeting in San Diego on Monday, August 8 to discuss major threats to their industry and businesses posed by legislation currently pending in the U.S. Congress.
The gathering, entitled “Save Hosting!,” will take place at noon at the San Diego Convention Center, room 30A, in conjunction with the HostingCon conference.

Attendees at the meeting will include Christian Dawson, COO of ServInt and industry leaders from SoftLayer, Hosting.com, SingleHop and other innovative hosting companies.

Host company officials and other members of the Internet infrastructure industry are encouraged to attend this important meeting and learn about the scope of the threats posed to their business and efforts being organized to counter these threats.

According to Dawson, since its inception, the hosting industry has primarily been allowed to operate under fairly business-friendly regulations.
However, legislation that is making its way through Congress represents a significant change in the way government regulates the dissemination of data in the U.S.

This legislation would impose regulatory and compliance programs on businesses that only the largest hosting companies could afford.
The hosting industry is primarily comprised of small to medium service businesses.
Hosting companies are organizing to address the potential threats to their businesses if the legislation were to pass, including liability for customer’s content and burdensome record retention requirements.

One such bill is S 968, the so-called PROTECT-IP Act, which Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) introduced to prevent online threats to economic creativity and theft of intellectual property, as well as for other purposes. According to Dawson, under the legislation, even if host companies comply with the provisions of the bill, they may still be sued since, unlike provisions benefitting credit card processing companies, compliance does not result in immunity from civil suits.

Other pending bills – including S1207, the Data Security and Breach Notification Act of 201; S 1408, the Data Breach Notification Act of 2011; HR 1981, Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act; and, HR 1841 Data Accountability and Trust Act – do not take into account the hosting industry at all, and as a result create regulatory gaps that could lead to confusion about enforcement and enforcement targets.
cPanel’s newly extended DNS Cluster system provides server owners with the ability to enable DNS, obtain a secure API key, and use SoftLayer and VPS.NET hosted DNS services in just minutes.

cPanel CEO, Nick Koston, said that cPanel was able to rapidly develop this key piece of software once all the pieces were available from SoftLayer and UK2Group, and cPanel is looking forward to offering integration possibilities to other cPanel partners in the near future.

“We are very excited to be able to integrate and extend functionality with our Partner NOCs’ DNS services and other third-party DNS services,” Koston said.

The open architecture of the extended DNS Cluster functionality provides hosted DNS providers with a streamlined process of handling integrations with cPanel & WHM. Future integrators will be able to use SoftLayer and VPS.NET as models to learn methods for offloading DNS traffic and services from their local servers to any hosted DNS provider.
(The Hosting News) – A new breach has been identified in the area of global cyber hacking.
Recently internet security company McAfee detailed “Shady Rat,” a hacking operation that targeted 72 top worldwide entities.
Such victims included various U.S. defense contractors, government agencies, top companies, the United Nations, and plenty more.

The operation occurred over five years.
Although it mostly had U.S. targets, various other victims were based in countries such as Canada, South Korea, Taiwan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
The security company’s analysis of the attack was based off of accessing the intruders’ “Command & Control server.”
Despite the magnitude of the breach, McAfee says that most of the targets had already corrected problems caused by the infections.

According to the report, the operation relied on setting up a backdoor channel through malware.
Concluding its findings, McAfee stated, “This is a problem of massive scale that affects nearly every industry and sector of the economies of numerous countries, and the only organizations that are exempt from this threat are those that don’t have anything valuable or interesting worth stealing.”

Although the source of the operation wasn’t revealed, many tech analysts have suspected China as the source of various recent cyber-attacks.
Despite denying any involvement, the country was said to be the source of a recent high-profile attack on Google’s Gmail service.

Meanwhile, countries such as the United States have looked to increase their efforts against global cyber security threats by working with other nations, as well as developing new technology.
Other recent global cyber-attacks have included a breach on defense contractor Lockheed-Martin and one involving the Pentagon (which the U.S. said likely originated from an unidentified nation state).

Besides these larger scale global breaches that seem more mysterious, this year has seen plenty of other attacks where individual hacking groups have openly taken credit for particular breaches.

Groups LulzSec and Anonymous have recently dominated the headlines.
LulzSec has been responsible for attacks on sites belonging to Sony, PBS, the U.S. Senate, the CIA, and more while Anonymous has recently targeted the likes of U.S. defense contractor Booz Allen Hamilton and Monsanto, an agricultural company.
Fighting back, authorities in various countries have recently arrested people suspected of involvement in the organizations.

Even with all the bad news recently regarding cyber breaches, hopefully such developments have spread awareness and pushed entities to increase their protection against large cyber threats.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Web.com (http://www.web.com/) announced on Wednesday it has acquired host Network Solutions (http://www.networksolutions.com/) from private equity firm General Atlantic.
The announcement comes a full year after Web.com acquired Register.com in a high-profile, $135 million deal for the domain registration provider.

The acquisition will create an "end-to-end online solutions company with a clear path to $500 million in non-GAAP revenues," accorodng to the press release.

On a strategic level, the acquisition makes a lot of sense for Web.com since the two companies offer a comparable range of services aimed at the SMB market.

These services include web hosting, domain registration, web design, e-commerce solutions, online security products, SSL certificates, and search engine marketing and optimization.

Web.com said the combined company will be positioned to deliver "revenue growth in the low teens".

Upon closing, Web.com will pay Network Solutions $405 million in cash and issue 18 million shares of Web.com common stock. In addition, it will refinance the existing net debt of Network Solutions and pay certain fees.
"This transaction represents a unique opportunity to dramatically expand our scale, add further momentum to Web.com's already improving top line growth, and further expand our market share as the nationally recognized go-to provider of online marketing solutions specifically tailored to small and medium-sized businesses," said David Brown, chairman and CEO of Web.com. "Our integration strategy will be similar to our successful acquisition of Register.com, and we will be in a strong position to cross-sell and up-sell our services to Network Solutions' approximately two million retail customers and hundreds of thousands of wholesale customers. We believe this combination will provide significant long-term shareholder value as we grow our business, capitalize on synergies, improve our margins and generate substantial cash flow to invest greater resources in growth and branding initiatives."

The acquisition is expected to be completed in the fall, and at the close, General Atlantic and other current Network Solutions shareholders are expected to own about 37 percent of Web.com.
As part of the acquisition, Anton Levy, General Atlantic managing director and principal stakeholder in Network Solutions, will join the Web.com board of directors.

The combinted company is expected to earn revenue in the mid-$450 million range for 2011 and EBITDA of at least $120 million for 2011 before cost synergies and transaction expenses.

The combined companies have about 1,900 employees around the world and 3 million paying subscribers, which includes more than 9 million domains under management.

screenshot of Intel's cloud computing page

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Intel Labs (techresearch.intel.com) announced on Wednesday it has opened the Intel Science and Technology Center for Cloud Computing, which combines the efforts of Intel data center experts and researchers at Carnegie Mellon.

These researchers will work towards resolving issues in device and task specialization, automation for agility and scalability, analysis of large bodies of data, and interaction between intelligence at the edge and in the data center.

In October, Intel and several other large IT end-users formed the Open Data Center Alliance as part of this program.
The research center is just one of two Intel Science and Technology Centers at Carnegie Mellon University Intel opened as part of the combined $30 million investment, which also includes the Intel Embedded Computing Center.
The centers are a part of Intel's five-year, $100 million ISTC program to increase university research and accelerate innovation in key areas.

Intel said the centers will encourage "tighter collaboration between university thought leaders and Intel" by using open IP models with results publicly available through technical publications and open-source software releases.
"These new ISTCs are expected to open amazing possibilities," said Justin Rattner, chief technology officer at Intel. "Imagine, for example, future cars equipped with embedded sensors and microprocessors to constantly collect and analyze traffic and weather data. That information could be shared and analyzed in the cloud so that drivers could be provided with suggestions for quicker and safer routes.”

The ISTC forms a new cloud computing research community that broadens Intel's "Cloud 2015" vision with new ideas from top academic researchers.
Intel has also expanded the ISTC program by openly inviting researchers from across the US academic community to submit information to be considered in the process to define additional ISTCs.
The company has also posted a new video clip where Intel Data Center Group VP and GM Kirk Skaugen discusses the opening of the new Intel Science and Technology Center for Cloud Computing.
The organization expects to award at least one center before the end of 2011 and subsequently launch in 2012.
Andrew Kline, deputy general counsel for global policy at Go Daddy

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Go Daddy (www.godaddy.com) announced on Tuesday it has appointed former Obama policy advisor and attorney Andrew Kline as its new deputy general counsel for global policy.

The move comes a week after Go Daddy officially launched its 4th Generation cloud-based hosting services.

In this position, Kline will help Go Daddy expand internationally, as well as combat online illegal activities such as rogue Internet pharmacies and copyright infringement.

Kline will be based in Washington, DC and joins vice president for government relations Martha Johnston, who joined Go Daddy in December of 2005.

"After seeing Go Daddy's commitment and pledge to 'do the right thing,' I was inspired ... and knew I could go into the private sector and make a difference," said Kline. "Go Daddy has demonstrated its commitment to keeping the Internet safe in a way that gets results and I want to be a part of that team."

Kline, who is a former federal prosecutor, has spent many years focused on Internet enforcement issues.

As the chief of staff and senior advisor in the Office of US Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement, he was responsible for cracking down on counterfeit pharmaceuticals and copyright and trademark infringement, many with links to organized crime, gangs and terrorism.

"Andrew's record speaks for itself," said Go Daddy CEO and founder Bob Parsons. "Like our General Counsel Christine Jones, Andrew is an attorney who knows how to get things done, a leader and a person who works to make a difference ... and as fast as the Internet is growing, Go Daddy is going to stay ahead of it."

Go Daddy recently announced its plans to enter into partnership with KKR, Silver Lake and Technology Crossover Ventures in an investment reportedly estimated at around $2.3 billion.
(The Hosting News) – Virtual Bridges, Inc. and Savvis, a global leader in cloud infrastructure and hosted IT solutions for enterprises, today announced a partnership to deliver Virtual Bridges VERDE™ virtual desktop management and provisioning capabilities as an on-demand solution to organizations worldwide.
Featuring online, offline and branch VDI, VERDE is proven to help organizations reduce the cost and complexity of managing desktops, while minimizing security concerns and business risk.

With Savvis’ Managed Hosting platform and VERDE, organizations looking for on-demand managed VDI services now have access to an enterprise-class hosting and cloud infrastructure.
Using the joint solution, customers can easily scale their environment to meet fluctuating business demands, without sacrificing security or performance, regardless of whether the solution is deployed on a customer’s own infrastructure, hosted or delivered as a service by Savvis.

Virtual Bridges was recently named a “Major Player” in desktop virtualization by IDC, which cited the company’s current strengths and long-term strategy in delivering VDI solutions to market.

VERDE is designed for organizations that want to escape the constraints of physical computing, simplify desktop management, improve security and increase business agility.
As the industry’s only VDI Gen2 solution, VERDE provides end users access to both Windows and Linux desktops from any location or device — including tablets, netbooks, laptops and thin clients.
In addition, IT professionals can manage desktops centrally, reducing the costs and challenges associated with provisioning, updating and securing highly distributed PC environments.

“Cloud computing and VDI are both well-known for driving efficiency, reducing costs, increasing scalability and improving performance,” said Jim Curtin, president and CEO at Virtual Bridges.
“Savvis is one of the leaders in providing reliable, powerful cloud solutions. Together we’re bringing to market a compelling solution that will drive measurable ROI for customers.”

Among its many advantages, VDI Gen2 is helping organizations streamline their Windows 7 migrations. Instead of having to re-image all desktops and laptops, VERDE allows Savvis customers to create, test and deploy a virtual desktop with Windows 7 in minutes. Additionally, VERDE offers unified monitoring and management of desktops across onsite and offsite environments; high-definition multimedia support; automatic bi-directional sync for true mobility; and advanced cloud branch capabilities including disaster recovery and business continuity.

“Savvis provides enterprise-grade infrastructure services for Virtual Bridges to deliver a Device-as-a-Service offering to the market.
Our partners are providing high business value applications that leverage our cloud infrastructure for government and enterprise clients,” said Jaywant Rao, vice president, global alliances at Savvis.
“We are excited to team with Virtual Bridges as a partner of the Savvis global alliances program.”
Most hosting accounts offer customers email services that are quite adequate.
Some of them even provide web-based access to those accounts.
Still, some customers may prefer the familiarity of their cloud email service, such as Gmail.
They may also have their business tied to Google Apps or another cloud service.
In such a case, you can easily make Google Apps your default email server in cPanel.

To configure cPanel to use Google Apps mail, do the following:

1. Login to cPanel and navigate to Mail section.
2. Select MX entry.
3. If you have multiple domains, select the domain you want to configure. Otherwise, skip to step 4
4. In the “Email Routing” section, choose “Remote Mail Exchanger”
5. Giving it a priority of zero (lower priority is first), set the destination to your cloud service provider
(This may vary, but for Google, it may be something like ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM)
6. Click “Add New Record”
7. Repeat steps for the other records (Google requires several).

If you have any existing MX entries, delete them or give them lower priority than your cloud provider’s.
Now, any email sent to addresses at your domain will automatically be routed to your Google Apps gmail accounts, according to the addresses you have setup within that system.
It should be noted that your web host will still have to route the email, so it will need to rely on your host’s DNS servers.
For more information about setting up your email for other cloud service providers, you should consult their documentation.

Therefore, 34SP.com has created this special domain pricing allowing a superior discount over standard domain prices. While this pricing is for a limited time only, we expect savvy developers and small businesses to stock up on the domains they need for the next few years at this time.”
A small selection of TLDs available in Europe from EPAG

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) --Domain registrar Tucows (http://www.tucowsinc.com/) announced on Tuesday that it has acquired all the shares of EPAG Domainservices GmBH (http://www.epag.de/) from QSC AG (http://www.qsc.de/) for about $2.5 million in cash.

German-based EPAG is an ICANN-accredited registrar that manages more than 400,000 domains. The registrar offers more than 200 TLDs as well, according to the press release.

This acquisition will increase Tucows exposure to the German reseller market, as well as bolster its OpenSRS wholesale domain registration services.

Tucows says it will continue serving EPAG customers and resellers via existing EPAG tools. Tucows will integrate EPAG's domain services into its OpenSRS wholesale domain registration service, according to the report.

“We believe combining the power of OpenSRS’ 12,000 active resellers in over 120 countries with EPAG’s ability to register such a broad range of TLDs will make OpenSRS unique in the industry,” Tucows president and CEO Elliot Noss said in a statement. “We expect that the deep expertise in registry integration we gain from EPAG will add invaluable bench-strength to our team as we prepare for ICANN’s roll-out of new TLDs.”

In July, the WHIR interviewed OpenSRS director of product management Adam Eisner on ICANN's decision to approve new TLDs. Eisner will present at HostingCon 2011 (http://www.hostingcon.com/) on Monday, August 8, about what the new TLDs will mean to hosting.

With this acquisition, OpenSRS will now manage more than 11.5 million domain names and, by the end of the year, OpenSRS resellers will be able to access more than 200 TLDs.

Tucows says it had "relatively little exposure" to the German-language reseller market before this acquisition.

In an OpenSRS blog post on Tuesday, Eisner says existing resellers can expect to see "significant gTLD and ccTLD coverage improvements, with a particular focus on regions like Europe, South America and Asia."

Since 2000, EPAG has specialized in the management of domains for domain resellers and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Last month, web hosting provider ResellerClub launched customized programs in the UK and German markets to support the demand of domain and internet services.
Sitting between secure, dedicated private cloud computing and open, low cost public cloud hosting is a secure, shared cloud middle ground we call managed cloud hosting.

Public cloud hosting is typically built around the “compute as a utility” model where cost is the driving consideration, overriding security and availability, to deliver commodity-level pricing where computing is sold at pennies per hour.

Managed cloud hosting sits the other end of the spectrum in the shared cloud world.
Like public cloud computing, servers can be purchased “by the slice”, or a virtual server at a time.
However, the entire design premise for the managed cloud is to put security & high availability ahead of cost considerations.
Rather than purchasing servers by the hour, managed cloud hosting is sold on monthly (or longer) contracts for businesses that are running enterprise critical applications for the long haul.

At Online Tech, we built our managed cloud hosting solution around our secure, high availability private cloud hosting architecture.
We chose to build our shared servers on an “N+1” redundant architecture and data center infrastructure. That means there is redundancy in every component of the system – from power and internet delivery to the hardware and network components with no single point of failure in the system.
Should any component fail, there are redundant components in place to maintain the server and Internet availability.

The five benefits of managed cloud hosting include:

High Availability - Because the managed cloud is built around a high availability private cloud architecture, redundancy is built in with multiple hosts, SAN storage and network security. This provides for failover protection and the unique ability to update and maintain the hardware without a maintenance window.

Automatic Failover & Resource Balancing – Built with VMware Enterprise Edition as the virtualization technology, failover and resource balancing between hardware hosts is automatically handled at the virtualization level – allowing the cloud servers to take full advantage of the high availability infrastructure should any host fail.

Network Security – Dedicated, secure VLANs, firewalls and IDS/IPS can be put in place for any set of cloud servers – delivering the same highly secure, dedicated network environment found on private cloud solutions.

Hybridize with Physical Servers – Applications and data base engines that can’t meet their performance requirements on a virtual server or need to run on a physical server to access all of the hardware resources can share a dedicated network with cloud servers, creating a hybrid of physical and virtual servers in the same system.

Cost Effective – On a monthly basis, managed clouds are as cost effective as most public clouds. True, you can’t buy servers by the hour, but long term enterprise applications are rarely run on an hourly basis.

Not all applications are geared to take advantage of managed cloud hosting. Research computing, development servers and test servers are good examples of non-critical systems that can take advantage of the hourly or spot demand pricing available in the public cloud utility market.

On the other hand, most businesses want to assure the security & availability of their corporate and client data with either managed cloud hosting or a private cloud. Managed cloud computing provides the security and availability of a dedicated private cloud at a fraction of the cost.
One of the benefits of a VPS and virtualization in general is that you can run a complete and functional installation of an operating system within another OS installation.
For example, you can run a fully-functional Windows installation from within Linux. Furthermore, unlike emulation, virtual machines tap directly into the hardware, requiring no extra CPU power.

Moreover, a VPS is installed in something called a container.
In Linux, there is the concept of a chroot jail, within which is a complete installation of an operating system. For the user, the VPS appears to function exactly like a dedicated server, providing full root access and all of the administrative privileges that accompany that access.
In reality, however, that user cannot navigate outside of his container and is always restricted within it.

Even if the OS within a virtual machine crashes, freezes, or is otherwise disrupted, the rest of the server and the other VPS containers will continue to function normally.
Furthermore, each container is only allocated a specified amount of CPU power and memory.
Even if that is maxed out by some anomaly, the rest of the server should continue to function as expected. Therefore, virtual private servers are very secure for you as a dedicated server system administrator and for other VPS users.
There is a ton of new terminology associated with cloud computing and cloud hosting. Some view the term “cloud” itself as little more than a catch phrase. As one tech expert once said, “There is no cloud. It’s just a bunch of servers”. Be that as it may, the cloud has taken the business world by storm, with many executives hoping to save money and resources by moving to the cloud.

One of the terms frequently thrown out by companies offering cloud technology is the “hybrid cloud”. One simple definition describes a hybrid cloud as a combination of a private cloud and a public cloud. If you are not sure what those are, however, that definition probably means little to you.

Essentially, a hybrid cloud refers to a business that keeps some of its server operations on-premise, while also utilizing the services of a cloud provider for its other operations. These two environments are distinctively different in their physical locations, but the right technology can help them work together rather seamlessly.

In some cases, the hybrid cloud may be the exclusive design setup offered by your service provider. In other words, the cloud vendor will manage both the public cloud and the private cloud, even though the latter is physically housed on your premises. For some businesses, using a hybrid cloud allows them to enjoy better scalability. For example, they may keep static applications on their private cloud while keeping data and other dynamic content on the public cloud. As their need for more space and power increases, they can add more to the public side of the hybrid without needing to increase local infrastructure.
Cyworld, South Korea’s top social networking site was recently hacked, according to its owner, SK Communications.

With the breach, hackers accessed data pertaining to Cyworld’s nearly 33 million users.

According the Wall Street Journal, the social network’s owner, SK Communications reported that such data breach pertained to users’ emails, numbers, names, and more.

Here’s where things get interesting: South Korea has nearly 49 million citizens.
Also, most of Cyworld’s 33 million users are in the country. That’s a massive breach, possibly affecting the majority of South Korean citizens.

Meanwhile, SK Communications is said to be working with the country’s law enforcement and is mostly worried that the information could be used for spamming.

So far it’s thought that the attack probably originated from somewhere in China, according to SK Communication’s investigation into the matter.
This really comes as no surprise as China has been a suspected source of various global cyber-attacks in the recent past.

A recent breach of Google’s Gmail service is thought to have originated from the country. Meanwhile, China has strongly denied any involvement.

The latest global breach occurs as countries, especially the United States, look to strengthen global cyber security.
Most recently the U.S. revealed that the Pentagon faced a cyber-attack on its systems, most likely originating from a nation state.
U.S. military contractor Lockheed-Martin also faced an attempted breach on its system.
However, to combat such problems, the U.S. is said to be working on a virtual cyber-range, giving the U.S. the ability to test new defenses in the battle against global cyber threats.

Cyworld was launched in 1999, quickly becoming popular with young adults in South Korea.
In 2006, CyWorld attempted to enter the U.S. market, setting up a possible competition with other social sites including Facebook and the then-popular MySpace.
However, the social site failed to really make a mark in the U.S. and SK Communications pulled it from the country in 2010.
Besides South Korea, the social network is available in Vietnam and China.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- In a relatively quiet launch, Apple (http://www.apple.com/) announced on Tuesday it has released its much anticipated cloud storage service, iCloud (http://www.icloud.com/), ahead of its fall release.

First announced in June at the WWDC 2011 conference, the cloud sync and media streaming service allows users to sync files, apps, app data, and media across iOS devices, Macs, and PCs.

Apple's willingness to market the service as a "cloud" offering to its customers proves just how the cloud has become a mainstream consumer technology.

It should also impact the direction for companies involved in the infrastructure hosting businesses in developing the back-end for the consumption and storage model that will emerge, following iCloud service's full release.

The beta is open to any user with an Apple ID, the beta release offers web-based versions of Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Find my IPhone and iWork. However, it does not include music streaming service, iTunes Match.

Using iOS 5 or Mac OS X Lion, the service can be accessed at the iCloud.com website, which features a similar front-end to the MobileMe service.

MobileMe and its corresponding website will officially be discontinued on June 30, 2012. Apple said that MobileMe features will continue to work until that time, and even well after users move over to iCloud, which should give users of iWeb, iDisk, and the Apple Gallery service plenty of time to transfer their files to other web hosts before MobileMe's full demise.

Users of iCloud beta can browse their webmail, manage their contacts, view and edit calendar events, and access the Find My iPhone tool.

The beta also includes a new app for iWork, which provides details for iCloud's file storage for documents generated in Keynote, Pages and Numbers iOS applications.

The service features a log-in screen that resembles the same one that was leaked in advance of Apple's official iCloud announcement at WWDC.

At the time, it was unsure whether the service would feature a Web-based front-end, but Apple eventually confirmed it would just a few weeks later.

Apple also released the official pricing structure for iCloud. The first 5 GB of storage on the service are free. After this point, users will be charged an $20 for an additional 10 GB, $40 for 20 GB and $100 for 50 GB.

A demo shows a website loading with Google Page Speed

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Google (http://www.google.com/) announced on Thursday that it has released its Page Speed Service, a hosted solution that automatically speeds up loading of web pages.

Also on Thursday, the Senate's anti-trust panel scheduled a hearing titled, 'The Power of Google: Serving Consumers or Threatening Competition?' for mid-September. The US Federal Trade Commission will look into complaints from Google's rivals that allege it abuses its market dominance.

According to a blog post by Google engineering manager Ram Ramani, in order to use the service users need to sign up and point their site's DNS entry to Google.

"Page Speed Service fetches content from your servers, rewrites your pages by applying web performance best practices, and serves them to end users via Google's servers across the globe," Ramani writes.

The service promises to improve speed on websites by up to 60 percent. Currently, it is only being offered to a limited set of webmasters for free, but Google says it will be competitively priced eventually.

Google has set up a test site to measure users individual speed improvements.

This isn't Google's first step into the website optimization space. Two years ago Google released its Page Speed browser extension which tested performance and offered improvement suggestions to websites. Google also release its Page Speed API this year, and mod_pagespeed, an Apache module that automatically rewrites web pages.

The announcement is what many would call a no-brainer: the faster web pages load, the longer visitors stay online, as CNET pointed out in its report. This logic also influences the amount of time visitors are looking at ads.

Some seem to be concerned with the effect that Google's service will have on other web optimization firms like Akamai (http://www.akamai.com/) or CloudFlare (http://www.cloudflare.com/).

On Thursday, Akamai's shares plummeted, sliding nearly 20 percent to $23.85, according to Marketwatch. This could have something to do with Google's new service, but the report also indicated that smaller rivals have been challenging Akamai's market share for some time.

"One of the main differentiators between Google and CloudFlare is that Google's goal is to take over hosting via their AppEngine service, they are competitive with hosting providers," Matthew Prince, CEO of CloudFlare tells the WHIR. "CloudFlare works to be complementary to hosting providers.”

Prince says CloudFlare has known Google was working on this service for a while. Prince says he is happy to see other companies working to make the web faster.

"There's nothing that stops you from using Google Page Speed behind CloudFlare and I suspect if Google opens the service up more broadly we may offer it as a CloudFlare App -- just like we have with Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools," Prince writes in a blog post.

CloudFlare provides website optimization and security for free, regardless of bandwidth or website size, according to the post.
A diagram from Prolexic illustrates how a DDoS attack works

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- DDoS mitigation provider Prolexic Technologies (http://www.prolexic.com/) warned organizations in Asia, Europe and North America to be cautious as the magnitude of DDoS threats is likely to escalate over the next six to eight months.

On Wednesday the company announced that it had mitigated a major DDoS attack of "unprecedented size in terms of packet-per-second volume," viewing this as an early warning of DDoS escalation.

According to the press release, the attack was directed against an unnamed Asian ecommerce company. Prolexic says the attack generated larger than normal TCP SYN Floods and ICMP Floods.

Paul Sop, chief technology officer at Prolexic, said the volume reached levels of approximately 25 million packets per second. In comparison, he said, most high-end border routes can forward 70,000 packets per second in usual deployments.

Typically only 5,000 to 10,000 bots have been employed in the five previous attacks mitigated by Prolexic, but the company claims this attacker's botnet had 176,000 remotely controlled bots.

“The customer attempted to mitigate these repeated DDoS attacks for many months with solutions from its ISP and its carrier before approaching Prolexic,” Sop said in a statement. “Defeating this attack is a testament to our unrivaled capacity and our unique position as the only global DDoS mitigation provider with the experience and bandwidth to successfully fight these gigantic attacks.”

Prolexic said that in order to eliminate the burden on a single carrier, it distributed traffic among several of its global Tier 1 carrier partners and network centers.
According to the press release, the client was able to maintain service availability throughout the attack.

“Prolexic sees this massive attack in Asia with millions of packets per second as an early warning beacon of the increasing magnitude of DDoS attacks that may be on the horizon for Europe and North America in the next six to eight months,” Sop stated. “High risk clients, such as those extremely large companies in the gaming and gambling industries in Asia, are usually the first targets of these huge botnets just to see how successful they can be.”

Sop said that the increasing magnitude of DDoS attacks are "especially insidious" because they cause damage to carriers before the bad traffic reaches its intended target.

Prolexic said it has only seen this botnet "once in the Western Hemisphere to date."

(The Hosting News) – Could data centers be consuming less power than once believed? The New York Times recently reported on data center power use based on a study from Stanford Professor Jonathan G. Koomey. The findings posed some interesting results.

To get his results, Koomey relied on data compiled by IDC, an information firm.

Back in 2007, the EPA predicted that data center power would double in a span of five years (2005-2010). However, Koomey’s study found something different. In fact, the study found an actual increase of around 56% worldwide. In the United States, data centers saw an increase by 36%. That’s not quite the doubling the EPA was predicting.

So, what are the reasons behind the shortfall of power consumption by the facilities? According to the New York Times, such factors may include “power-saving technologies” along with the global recession.

Cutting power consumption isn’t necessarily a bad thing though. In fact, it’s often seen as good. More recently, many top data center builders have looked for ways to cut power costs by introducing new methods for cooling facilities’ servers. For example, in May, Google announced a Finland data center that would use cooling methods by relying on water from the Baltic Sea.

Despite the fact that power-use failed to double, it’s still shown a steady climb, signaling the continued importance of data center facilities. In some regards, perhaps the global recession has played a small part and pushing data centers to innovate towards more energy-efficient technology.

In his study, Koomey also found something very interesting pertaining to Google. Despite its high profile, Google is responsible for just around less than 1% of data center power.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) --Security solutions provider Symantec (http://www.symantec.com/) announced on Thursday that it has issued more than 250 million SSL certificates.

This news comes a few weeks after Symantec acquired data backup and archiving firm Clearwell Systems.
Symantec says this milestone indicates the growing importance of security certificates in smart phones, tablets and other devices.

“Hitting a quarter-billion user and device certificates is a huge milestone that reflects the success we’ve had enabling large commercial and government organizations to improve their security by leveraging certificates for strong authentication, encryption and digital signatures," Adam Geller, senior director, user authentication, Symantec said in a statement. "Symantec’s newly released Managed PKI Service will only accelerate the adoption of cloud-based certificate solutions to power the next generation of security applications and the organizations that will increasingly rely on them.”

According to the press release, managing certificates through Public Key Infrastructure is especially important because of the number of devices and cloud-based applications requiring authentication.

Symantec says its newly rebranded Symantec Managed PKI Service is built as a scalable, multi-tenant cloud-based service that helps to protect customer data.

According to Symantec, its PKI solutions will play a critical role in delivering secure communications as networking capabilities are increasingly embedded into critical infrastructure.
How it is managed, stored and taken care of is of significant interest to all of those who work in the IT department of any company, and to those who work in IT provider roles within the industry.
With the advancement of both virtualization and the cloud, how data is managed has taken on an even larger role, as companies struggle to understand how new technologies can help them store their data more efficiently, as well as why they must be careful about how much of their data is stored and where.

The integration of the term “cloud” into everyday business IT language has brought with it the concept of “as a service”.
Thanks to the cloud’s always-on model as a part of the Internet at large and constantly up servers, providers have begun to offer almost every part of IT functionality as purchasable services, many of which were formerly viewed as the province of in-house IT.
These include software as a service (SaaS), infrastructure as a service (IaaS), and platform as a service (PaaS).
Both SaaS and IaaS are rapidly gaining ground; the fact that PaaS is lagging behind has companies contemplate just how much of their proprietary platform choices they wish to give up.

A new option that has developed in the last two years is the concept of database as a service (DaaS), which allows companies to store their data on a provider’s server.
While there is a great deal of interest in this service, companies must know what they are getting into before they make a switch.

The most common form of DaaS is on a Database VPS. This is often a more tightly-focused version of the cloud, in which data from a customer is stored on a virtual machine which is part of a larger physical server. If the data is stored truly in the cloud, it will be spread among multiple servers that have access to a single storage disk, and that can provide backup if there is a failure.
When it comes to database storage, the most common concern among companies is knowing exactly where their data is going.
While it will still be accessible to them from their local desktops, its physical home will no longer be in their offices, but in a server which could be located anywhere in the country or on the other side of the world. For some, this distance is too great to be borne, and using DaaS isn’t yet an option.

For others, the concern lies in security. A database VPS must have adequate controls and permissions in place to guarantee data privacy.
Data can be a very valuable commodity, and can include things like intellectual property, patent information and proprietary program design.
Administrators at a local level must have access to their own data, but admins from the provider must also have some access as well, in order to address any problems that may emerge if the server fails.
This kind of hosted database option can allow a company to use the provider’s server as a backend to their own applications, and may run on MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL VPS allowing for a broad array of data storage choices.

Once a reliable provider has been identified that can guarantee security, access and storage location, a database as a service option can be a great use of a Hosted VPS or Cloud VPS in allowing a company to free up local storage space and keep IT costs down.
For your ecommerce hosting, the use of SSL largely depends on the type of business you have and the functions your website will serve.
For example, if you intend to have an online store that collects information about your customers, such as their names, addresses, credit card numbers, and more, SSL is a must.
Many users will not trust your site if they do not see the HTTPS in the address bar and a valid SSL certificate associated with it.

Some companies use their website only as the frontend of the store, while all transactions are actually handled by a third-party payment processor, which uses SSL encryption on its own site.
In this scenario, you may be able to get away without having SSL, but you may still want it if you collect other user data, such as names and email addresses, even if no financial information is given.
For sites that only provide contact information for your business, SSL is likely unnecessary.

If you do decide to go with SSL, you will need to make sure your web hosting company offers an ecommerce package or a package that gives you an IP address for SSL. You will also need to purchase an SSL certificate, something your host may also provide as part of an ecommerce hosting package.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- In the latest update in the ongoing initiative to consolidate government-wide data centers, federal CIO Vivek Kundra has implemented a new set of deadlines for federal agencies in which they must outline their consolidation plans on their websites by October 7.

Kundra, who will officially leave his position next month, sent out a memo Tuesday implementing new deadlines for agencies to submit quarterly schedules of data center closures from now through 2015, information on challenges experienced to date, and the lessons they have learned.
Last week, Kundra said the government was ahead of schedule in its consolidation efforts. In addition to closing 195 data centers by the end of 2011, he confirmed that federal agencies would shut down an additional 292 data centers over the next 18 months.

Once they publish their plans, federal agencies will be required to give details on cost savings, changes in asset inventories, and consolidation progress in fiscal 2013 budget submissions. All of this information will be due within the next few months.

The Federal Data Center Consolidation Task Force will publish a report by next March that will outline the agencies' consolidation best practices.

In addition to setting up deadlines, Kundra also highlighted the task force's main responsibilities, which include focusing on technical best practices, guidelines for consolidation, the correlation between cloud computing and data center consolidation, and how the consolidation initiative relates to green government and federal real estate initiatives.

The task force, the General Services Administration and the Office of Management and Budget will all be responsible for developing a government-wide marketplace for remaining data center capacity, which is set to open ib June 9, 2012.

By 2015, the government is looking to shut down more than 800 data centers, which accounts for 40 percent of the total number of data centers in the country.
According to the White House, the initiative is estimated to save taxpayers $3 billion in the long haul.
GSA will host an industry day in August where vendors can offer their take on the data center consolidation initiative.
An excerpt of a Trusteer graph that shows the percentage of countries targeted by SpyEye Trojan

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- IT security provider Trusteer (http://www.trusteer.com/) announced on Tuesday via its blog new research findings that show an increasing number of financial institutions are being targeted by the SpyEye Trojan.

The company said its risk analysis teams have also found an increase in the number of countries where financial institutions are being targeted by fraudsters using SpyEye, based on findings from the Trusteer Situation Room and its anomaly detection service Pinpoint.

By looking at the monthly findings from the SpyEye command and control centers, Trusteer's risk analysis team discovered that 60 percent of the SpyEye bots target financial institutions in the US.

This is followed by the UK with 53 percent, Canada with 31 percent, Germany 29 percent, and Australia 20 percent.

The percentage of SpyEye bots targeting Canadian banks more than doubled from 14 percent in May to 31 percent in June.

Other destinations that are included in more than 10 percent of SpyEye bots include Italy, Ireland, UAE, Spain, Costa Rica, France, Turkey, India, Jordan, Russia, and Portugal, and continues to expand in more countries.

In May, SpyEye added targets in the Middle East including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman, and in June, attacked financial institutions in Venezuela, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Japan, Hong Kong and Peru. Russia is also a relatively new addition to the target list, said the company.

Trusteer also points out that the fraud patterns used by SpyEye differ from that of popular financial malware, Zeus, by using code that goes undetected by transaction monitoring systems.
SpyEye seems to follow Agile software development practices using flexible coding, enabling developers to quickly roll out new versions by modifying the program code itself.

Over the past 18 months, developers of the malware have been effectively merging it with that of the older Zeus code.

Trusteer has covered SpyEye a few times before in its blog, including in a report last October.

In this latest report, the company recommends that financial institutions monitor development in the SpyEye toolkit, and in particular, pay close attention to SpyEye attack vectors that target their brand and other financial institutions.

The company said this information from the process should be included in the financial institution's security controls such as anomaly detection and endpoint protection.

It also said that US banks will incorporate real-time threat intelligence and anomaly detection from services like Trusteer Situation Room and Trusteer Pinpoint under the updated FFIEC Guidance for online banking security.
A screenshot from Go Daddy's website shows the detailed 4GH plans

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) --Web hosting provider and domain registrar Go Daddy (http://www.godaddy.com/) announced on Wednesday that it has officially launched its 4th Generation cloud-based hosting.
This launch comes a month after Go Daddy announced its highly anticipated acquisition by KKR, Silver Lake and Technology Crossover Ventures. Though the deal is not completed yet, the strategic investment is reported to be in the range of $2 billion.

A report by GigaOm last month speculated Go Daddy's cloud hosting would launch in July though it called the service "Data Center on Demand."

Accodring to the press release, Go Daddy was "in the cloud before the term was coined" but 4GH is the next level of cloud services.

Go Daddy is a household name for domain registration and web hosting but this is the company's first major step into the cloud space. The huge demographic of customers that Go Daddy reaches will likely ensure high adoption, especially considering it already has 9.4 million customers and manages more than 49 million domain names.

In February 2010, Go Daddy launched cloud-based Mac OS X web hosting.
Accodring to the press release, Go Daddy was "in the cloud before the term was coined" but 4GH is the next level of cloud services.

Go Daddy says its cloud hosting offering is a result of customer feedback and demand for more scalability than shared hosting providers.

Customers using 4GH receive proprietary dynamic traffic management, dynamic defense management and dynamic server management are equipped with "near-enterprise level" service, according to Go Daddy.

Currently, 4GH hosting offers no support for Java, ColdFusion and FrontPage Extensions. It also does not support streaming video, email hosting or multiple clients like cPanel or Parallels Plesk Panel's client configuration though it allows for multiple domains to be hosted on the same account. It also does not support Microsoft Access database.

"4GH was created to help our customers succeed," Go Daddy CEO and founder Bob Parsons said in a statement. "For example, a customer would be mentioned on Oprah or CNN and suddenly their web server had more traffic than it was designed to handle. We'd quickly move them to a dedicated server to protect them, along with our other shared hosting customers. It was like an epiphany - we needed a new platform that could react immediately. You could say, with 4GH our customers who suddenly find themselves in the limelight won't miss their '15 minutes of fame.'"

According to a report by Data Center Knowledge, Go Daddy automatically scales capacity at no additional cost and does not charge for additional bandwidth, unlike its competitors.
The plans start at $4.99 per month for an economy version. The deluxe plan is $7.99 per month or the ultimate plan is $14.99 per month.

Go Daddy says its 4GH web hosting is backed by its 24/7 "Site Defenders" team that prevents cyber attacks and detects website vulnerabilities.
(The Hosting News) – SoftLayer® Technologies, the innovation leader in Cloud, Dedicated, and Managed hosting, today announced the expansion of its storage options for CloudLayer® Computing Instances (CCI) to include Local Disk Storage.
Available as an alternative to SoftLayer’s Storage Area Network (SAN)-based CCIs, the new option brings customers the ability to choose the storage that best meets their individual application and performance needs.

“Every customer is different, and needs different things from cloud,” said Duke Skarda, Chief Technology Officer for SoftLayer. “That’s why we created Build Your Own Cloud, letting customers tailor the CPU power, RAM, and storage capacity of their CCIs to their application requirements.
Local Disk Storage takes that even farther, bringing customers even greater control over how their cloud solutions perform.”

Local Disk Storage for CloudLayer Computing is implemented as RAID Level 10, for enterprise-grade reliability and security. 25GB or 100GB Local Disks are available for primary storage, and 100GB or 200 GB Local Disks are available for additional storage.
SAN-based storage continues to be available; currently the two storage options cannot be used together.

“There are inherent differences between SAN and Local Storage that give each their own advantages,” said Mr. Skarda.
“Since SAN-based CCIs store their data in a shared location, they will always provide faster recovery options and greater flexibility in scaling total storage capacity.
But, naturally, Local Disk-based CCIs can provide faster input/output speeds, making them an even better option for storage-intensive applications and lowering total cost of operations.
Now, it’s entirely up to you which benefits you’d rather leverage.”
