Coupon Tracker Sees Spike in Web Hosts Targeting Go Daddy Outrage

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- A coupon code tracking website CouponFollow (www.couponfollow.com) issued a press release this week, saying it has seen a spike in discounted offerings from web hosting providers targeting customers looking to move their accounts away from hosting giant Go Daddy in the wake of a controversial video of the company’s CEO Bob Parsons shooting and killing an elephant while on vacation in Zimbabwe.

Parsons discussed the video in a phone interview with the WHIR, in which he credited “a very vocal minority” with producing most of the objection to the video. He says he isn’t worried about a backlash, and he actually expects the company to end up with more new business because of the controversy (though he says that wasn’t why he posted the video).

CouponFollow, an in-beta site that offers to help “track coupon codes in real-time via twitter” is tracking a list of hosting and domain promotional codes specifically targeting Go Daddy.

The company is tracking several promotions, including the originally-reported offering from NameCheap, which has been promoting the coupon code “BYEBYEGD” since the video was first posted, and has reportedly appeared on Twitter more than 1,000 times, making it one of the most popular codes on the CouponFollow site. The company has extended the deadline on the coupon code several times.
"PETA helped these discounts go viral. We believe the NameCheap coupon alone has made its way to well over a million Twitter users' feeds," says CouponFollow founder Marc Mezzacca, quoted in the press release.

Notably, the NameCheap code specifically targeting Go Daddy predates the elephant video by many weeks. The first appearance of the “BYEBYEGD” discount code on Twitter was a post by “MakeInstantCash” that appeared February 3, almost two months before the elephant video appeared online.

The post reads “Go Namecheap.com for $3.99 domains! Use coupon code BYEBYEGD. Offer begins on Feb 6th, at 5:00 AM GMT and ends Feb 7th at 5:00 AM GMT.” Namecheap’s more recent promotion offers a $4.99 transfer, with 25 percent ($1) going to a charity called Save the Elephants.

It appears that NameCheap raised the price of an existing coupon code by $1, and is giving that $1 to charity, while adding a topical and controversial element to its pursuit of Go Daddy customers.

The full list of coupon codes targeting Go Daddy includes offerings from Domain.com, GreenGeeks, LunarPages and others. Many of them include charitable donations.

A word to the wise for hosting providers courting outraged customers of Go Daddy. You’re bringing on board a base of users that has already demonstrated it’s willingness to vote with its wallets, so to speak. Be careful not to make these people upset.
