Dell Looks to Acquisitions to Expand Server Business

By Nicole Henderson,May 31, 2011
An image of Dell's EqualLogic server from its website

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Technology giant Dell (http://www.dell.com/) is looking to acquisitions to expand its server market, according to a report by Bloomberg.

According to the report, Amit Midha, Dell's president for Greater China and South Asia said on Tuesday that  Dell is interested in buying "everything around data centers."

"We want to continue to bring innovation through acquisitions," Midha said in a statement.

Earlier this year, Dell bought virtualized storage firm Compellent Technologies for about $960 million to build out its storage offerings.

The data center market apparently makes up half of Dell's profit, Bloomberg reports.

Recently, Dell entered the cloud hosting market with a plan to invest $1 billion this year on cloud services like email archiving and a hosted virtual desktop.

Midha says Dell has about 70 percent of the market for servers in the US, and 60 percent in China.

There has been an increase in demand from Chinese IT firms looking for servers for search-engine, e-commerce and social networking services, Midha says.

According to the report, China is Dell's largest market by revenue outside of the US.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Dell plans to spend approximately $100 billion in China over the next 10 years.

In April, Chinese-government owned server manufacturer Inspur launched its "smart cloud" container based cloud data center product. The modular container-based design has grown in popularity for cloud providers including HP, Sun Microsystems and Microsoft.

Recently, Singapore has been the focus of data center and Web hosting expansion. Specifically, Web hosting provider Tata Communications announced its plans to invest $357 million in Singapore over the next four years.

Fujitsu Expands Cloud Infrastructure Platform to North America

By Justin Lee,May 27, 2011
An image of the inside of Fujitsu's Sunnyvale, California data center

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Technology services and solutions provider Fujitsu (http://solutions.us.fujitsu.com/) announced this week it will soon launch its Global Cloud Platform in the North American market, following its previous launches in Japan, Australia, Singapore and UK.

The company initially began offering the cloud infrastructure service on a free trial basis in Japan last May, with subsequent launches in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Later this year, it will launch the offering in the UK and Continental Europe.

The Fujitsu Global Cloud Platform will be launched as a free trial of the Fujitsu infrastructure as a three-month free trial offering from May 31 through August 31.

The new service provides enterprise class, secure and highly available compute, storage, and network capacity via a web-based, self-service portal.

For a limited time, organizations will be able to access the IaaS offering for application testing and development, as well as high-performance processing for workloads such as data analytics.

The trial offering will allow enterprises to try before they buy and to experience the breadth of the solutions for free.

The service will become available for general release on September 1 and will be "competitively priced based on actual usage compute, storage, Internet communications and software," according to the press release.

Fujitsu America is introducing to the North American market the same cloud services offered by Fujitsu around the world, which makes it easier for multinational enterprises to service their infrastructure needs locally in multiple locations.

The platform is built on open standards with published APIs and includes 24-hour global support for the infrastructure platform.

The US service will be delivered from the Fujitsu data center in Sunnyvale, California. The Fujitsu Global Cloud Platform incorporates multi-tier security for an enterprise-grade environment.

Its browser interface makes it simple to build, provision and manage secure environments for even complex three-tier workloads.

"The Fujitsu Global Cloud Platform offers a high-quality IaaS cloud that enables enterprises to quickly deploy the appropriate business applications wherever they are in the world," said Jody Little, VP of cloud portfolio marketing at Fujitsu America. "It lowers organizational costs and risk and enables standardization between business units in North America and other regions of the world. Its security and availability levels allow organizations to speed their innovation and reap the benefits of cloud economics for many more business applications."

The Fujitsu offering supports Microsoft, Linux and CentOS open source-based applications.

Fujitsu-experienced cloud consultants assist clients in analyzing their workload requirements and defining a cloud strategy that is tailored to their business objectives.

Google Data Center Will Use Baltic Sea Cooling

May 25th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – Google, always looking to innovate, will open a new data center in Finland, which will harness water from the Baltic Sea to cool its servers.

The new facility will be the first to use the technique.

The data center, being built on the site of an old paper mill, will transport the water in through a granite tunnel, built by the land’s former occupants during the 1950s. From there, the water will reach straining systems where it will travel on before being cooled by a heat exchanger, making the water suitable for the data center.

The total construction and land cost come out to $260 million, but Google expects large savings from the efficient cooling system.

Google’s Finland data center is expected to open sometime this fall.
You can watch a video by Google on the data center here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VChOEvKicQQ&feature=player_embedded

UK Teens Sentenced After Hacks Shut Down Web Host Punkyhosting

By Nicole Henderson, May 17, 2011

A screenshot of the London Metropolitan Police's web page that alerts visitors about online fraud

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Two UK teens have been convicted after hacking websites to steal credit card information, and have been accused of forcing one web host to shut down completely, according to a report by the Register.

Zachary Woodham, 19, and Louis Tobenhouse, 18, were prosecuted Friday after an investigation found the duo had targeted online gambling sites and web hosting businesses to steal thousands of credit card numbers.

Between April and May 2009, under the alias "Colonoel Root" Woodham targeted Punkyhosting. According to a report by the Daily Mail, he accompanied "his cyber-attacks with a series of silent telephone calls." Following the attacks, Punkyhosting went out of business.

"The conduct was entirely gratuitous and Woodham picked on the company at random," prosecutor Hugh Davies told the court. "It destroyed the web hosting company in question, and with it several years of work for the owner."

According to the police statement, "the attack was detected by the organization and they made attempts to prevent it. In response, Woodham repeatedly attacked the company over a number of weeks, causing it to cease trading. He then sent a taunting email gloating about his actions."

Woodham used the credit card information to pay for access to premium rate chat lines which he owned, according to police, laundering the money which he then paid into his own accounts.

The pair were active participants of the online criminal forum "GhostMarket" and had posted tutorials on the website offering advice on how to hack into websites, fraud and evade police capture.

"Woodham and Tobenhouse chose to abuse their computer skills causing a considerable amount of financial loss and anxiety to a number of innocent people," Detective Constable Stuart Hosking, police central e-crime unit said in a statement. "Woodham in particular has shown himself to be a vindictive hacker with no sign of remorse towards any of his victims."

Upon their arrest in December 2010, Tobenhouse apparently commented he "will never get a job in IT now."

Tobenhouse was handed a 24-month community order and 400 hours of unpaid work for encouraging crime and possession of articles for fraud.

Woodham was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and 240 hours of unpaid work for hacking, encouraging crime, possession of articles for fraud and acquiring criminal property.

The judge told Woodham that he would have given him a three year sentence if he had been over 21 and hadn't pleaded guilty.

Last week, a UK law firm was charged over insufficient IT security after leaking 6,000 people's personal information. The firm had no firewall or access control on its IT system and was using a web hosting package not intended for business use.

Apple Secures Deal with Sony for Rumored Cloud Music Service

By Justin Lee, May 20, 2011

An aerial shot of Apple's Maiden, North Carolina data center site

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Apple (www.apple.com) has reached music licensing deals with Sony, EMI Group and Warner Music Group, in what some industry insiders believe is the company's first step towards launching an online subscription music service.

The company now only needs to secure a licensing deal with Universal Music Group to have all four major record labels on board for the service which will allow users to access their music libraries from mobile devices via the Internet.

The service is rumored to be hosted at Apple's massive, 500,000 square-foot data center in Maiden, North Carolina, which is also said to involve the relaunch of its MobileMe service.

Both an Apple spokesperson and representatives of the music labels declined to comment on the details of the rumored music subscription service.

The new iTunes service will let users upload their music on Apple's servers and access it via the Internet instead of uploading songs onto a device's hard drive, said individuals close to the matter.

It is still unclear as to whether Apple will charge a fee for the service or the exact date it will actually launch.

However, Apple could potentially give more details about the service and its launch date at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference, which will be held June 6 through 11.

Both Google and Amazon recently launched their own cloud-based music streaming services titled Music Beta by Google and Amazon Cloud Drive, respectively, despite securing licensing deals with music labels.

But unlike these rival services, Apple's cloud music service will not require users to upload their music libraries, said the individuals.

The cloud services are expected to jumpstart digital music sales, which have remained stagnant in the past few years.

Web Host Go Daddy Sponsors Fifth Straight Indianapolis 500 Broadcast

By Nicole Henderson,May 27, 2011

A screenshot of Go Daddy's website shows Danica Patrick

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web host and domain registrar Go Daddy (http://www.godaddy.com/) announced on Tuesday that it is sponsoring the Indianapolis 500 broadcast on Sunday for the fifth consecutive year.

According to many reports this week, the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 could be Danica Patrick's last race before jumping full-time to NASCAR.

In 2008, the company's Go Daddy Girl became the first woman to win an IndyCar Series race. Patrick has been a spokesperson for Go Daddy since 2006.

Along with this announcement, Go Daddy is set to debut its new commercial starring Danica Patrick on the ABC broadcast on Sunday.

Following the live broadcast, viewers can see a continuation of the commercial on Go Daddy's website.
"This commercial is fun, edgy and slightly inappropriate -- it's about as GoDaddy-esque as it gets," Go Daddy CEO and founder Bob Parsons said in a statement. "This ad starts in a garage and ends up ... well, it's safe to say it puts Danica in an environment few people have ever seen her in."

Last year, Patrick placed 6th in the race.

"Bob was my good luck charm at last year's Indy," Patrick said in a statement. "As far as my new Go Daddy commercial goes, viewers are going to be guaranteed a 'sweet ride' and that's all I'm going to reveal.  You'll just have to tune in to ABC TV and then check out GoDaddy.com Sunday."

Last week Go Daddy announced that it has donated more than $4.2 million dollars to charity so far this year. Recently, Parsons visited Haiti to deliver medical supplies and oversee the use of Go Daddy's donations in the country.

Windows 8 Set For 2012?

May 24th, 2011 By: THN News
(The Hosting News) – Windows 8 could be released as soon as 2012, this according to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
Ballmer had made the comments while speaking at the Microsoft Developer Forum in Tokyo on Monday, referencing that the “next generation of Windows systems” will come out “next year.”

However, following Ballmer’s remarks, the company is now backtracking, calling the CEO’s remarks at “misstatement”.

In a statement released by Microsoft following Ballmer’s comments, the company said, “We are eagerly awaiting the next generation of Windows 7 hardware that will be available in the coming fiscal year. To date, we have yet to formally announce any timing or naming for the next version of Windows.”

Despite having no official release date set, some analysts expect for more information on Windows 8 to come to light in the near future, especially at next week’s D: All Things Digital conference, where Microsoft’s President of Windows Division Steve Sinofsky is expected to speak.

LinkedIn Access Cookie Opens Users to Security Breaches, says Security Analyst

By Justin Lee,May 24, 2011
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- A security analyst says that professional networking website LinkedIn (http://www.linkedin.com/) is open to security flaws that could potentially allow hackers to breach users' accounts without the need for their passwords, according to a Reuters report.

The news comes only a couple days after LinkedIn went public which resulted in the value of its stock more than doubling.

New Dehli, India-based security researcher Rishi Narang reported about the vulnerability on his blog (http://www.wtfuzz.com/) Saturday where he explained that the flaw is connected to the way LinkedIn handles its cookies.

When members fill in their correct username and password at the login screen, LinkedIn's system automatically creates a cookie "LEO_AUTH_TOKEN" on the user's computer that allows the individual to  access the account.

While its a common practice for websites to use cookies for their user login, Narang said the LinkedIn cookie  differs from these sites in that it does not expire for an entire year after it is created.

Narang said that most websites could easily design these cookies to last for just 24 hours or less time from when users access their accounts.

The LinkedIn cookie's year-long expiration time means that anybody who attains the file can upload it to his or her computer and access the user's account.

LinkedIn said it is currently securing their customers' accounts, adding that the website supports secure sockets layers.

However, Narag said the company's access token cookies are not currently with SSL which means that attackers could easily steal the cookies using tools for monitoring Internet traffic.

LinkedIn said that it will "opt-in" SSL support for other areas of the website, which would apply to the access cookies, "in the coming months."

Since most LinkedIn users are completely oblivious to this security problem and why it is important to protect these cookies, Narang said the flaw is particularly troubling.

Microsoft Highlights Increased Risk Of Mailware

May 18th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – In a post on the company’s Internet Explorer official blog, Microsoft noted how Malware is an increasing problem for online users and stated that about 1 in every 14 downloads made online contains such. However, the company admitted that the statistic was only true for those using Internet Explorer.

The company stated, “User-downloaded malware is a huge problem and getting bigger” and showed how Malware makes its way onto users’ computers through downloads by displaying a graph showing the risks.

Microsoft initially posted the statistic to tout Internet Explorer 9′s ability to block malware attacks through its Application Reputation security feature.

The post also noted Application Reputation’s success rating, stating that 99% of users who received the malware warning didn’t end up opening the downloaded file and instead chose to delete it.

Hackers Hit At Sony Sites Worldwide

May 25th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – While still recovering from the recent compromise of its PlayStation Network, Sony Entertainment is feeling the heat from cyber criminals once again as hackers successfully breached various Sony websites worldwide.

After detecting the unauthorized intrusions, Sony has temporarily taken the sites offline and it currently appears that most of the sites were hit by SQL injections.

The hackers were able to make away with nearly 2,000 customers’ names and emails after compromising Canadian-based Sony site Ericsson eShop, an online store for mobile phones.
Hackers also hit at Sony Music Greece, making away with phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and passwords from nearly 8,000 user accounts.

Meanwhile, the company was left examining other breaches that occurred on Sony sites in Thailand and Indonesia.

In separate statements on each incident, Sony indicated that it’s working to restore the sites once the security flaws are fixed.

Sony recently suffered severe downtime and rebuilding of its PlayStation Network due to a massive security breach where thousands of users’ information was possibly exposed to hackers.

In the aftermath, the company has estimated that it will lose nearly $3.2 billion due to a combination of the downtime and the earthquake that affected Japan, where Sony is based.

Sony Estimates $171M in Losses from PlayStation Network Outage, More from Earthquake

By Nicole Henderson, May 24, 2011

A chart from Sony shows its fiscal year projections in Japanese yen

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Sony (http://www.sony.com/) is tallying up its losses after the month-long outage of its PlayStation Network, and executives estimate the downtime will cost the company at least $171 million, according to a report by Register.

After a breach in April, approximately 100 million users of the Sony PlayStation Network had their personal information compromised. It wasn't until mid-May that Sony began service restoration. The company expects to be fully restored by May 31.

Sony told investors that it has not received any confirmed reports of identity theft issues, or any misuse of credit cards. If these variables change the costs could fluxuate, according to Sony.

The $171 million will cover the costs associated with rebuilding the infrastructure and paying for credit protection services and compensation for its users.

According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, the estimate does not include potential liabilities resulting from lawsuits. Early May, a proposed class action lawsuit was filed against Sony on behalf of one million Canadian PlayStation and Qriocity users for breach of privacy and negligence.

According to the report, Sony said the effects of the March earthquake in Japan will be about $268.9 million, making its loss for the fiscal year that ended on March 31 approximately $3.18 billion. Sony said it would have to take a non-cash charge of about $4.4 billion for its fiscal year for deferring tax credits in Japan.

(The Hosting News) – A proposed bill in California by state Senate Majority Leader Ellen M. Corbett (D-San Leandro) seeks to apply sweeping privacy changes to online social sites including Twitter, Google, Facebook, and Skype. However, the legislation has the sites unified in opposition.

The bill would essentially force such social networking sites to make all user information private by default, thus requiring sites like Facebook to receive user approval through privacy settings before any entered data could be displayed publicly. Such user approval would typically be made by the user upon registration.
A user must currently display a name and photo when they have manually made Facebook settings as private as possible. The legislation would also give parents the independent ability to request that Facebook and other sites remove any information about their children. The sites would then be required to remove such information in a timely manner.

While the bill notes that removal of information could be done directly through their child’s social networking page, the bill takes into account that information on the child could be made available on other users’ pages.
Meanwhile, the online companies noted their opposition to the proposed legislation by sending a letter to Senator Corbett.

The companies stated that they believed the legislation would decrease overall consumer privacy, that it was unnecessary, would hurt the technology sector, and was unconstitutional.

The letter specifically stated that the law, “would require social networking sites to force users to make decisions about privacy and visibility of all of their information well before they have ever used the service. Known as “privacy shrink wrap”, this practice results in users clicking quickly through the available options without contextual understanding of or serious thought to the case-by-case implications of the choices being made”.

Corbett has rejected the social networking giants’ claims and defended the proposal as being straightforward.

The bill was initially proposed in February but just recently passed state senate committee.
