(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Intel Labs (techresearch.intel.com) announced on Wednesday it has opened the Intel Science and Technology Center for Cloud Computing, which combines the efforts of Intel data center experts and researchers at Carnegie Mellon.

These researchers will work towards resolving issues in device and task specialization, automation for agility and scalability, analysis of large bodies of data, and interaction between intelligence at the edge and in the data center.

In October, Intel and several other large IT end-users formed the Open Data Center Alliance as part of this program.
The research center is just one of two Intel Science and Technology Centers at Carnegie Mellon University Intel opened as part of the combined $30 million investment, which also includes the Intel Embedded Computing Center.
The centers are a part of Intel's five-year, $100 million ISTC program to increase university research and accelerate innovation in key areas.

Intel said the centers will encourage "tighter collaboration between university thought leaders and Intel" by using open IP models with results publicly available through technical publications and open-source software releases.
"These new ISTCs are expected to open amazing possibilities," said Justin Rattner, chief technology officer at Intel. "Imagine, for example, future cars equipped with embedded sensors and microprocessors to constantly collect and analyze traffic and weather data. That information could be shared and analyzed in the cloud so that drivers could be provided with suggestions for quicker and safer routes.”

The ISTC forms a new cloud computing research community that broadens Intel's "Cloud 2015" vision with new ideas from top academic researchers.
Intel has also expanded the ISTC program by openly inviting researchers from across the US academic community to submit information to be considered in the process to define additional ISTCs.
The company has also posted a new video clip where Intel Data Center Group VP and GM Kirk Skaugen discusses the opening of the new Intel Science and Technology Center for Cloud Computing.
The organization expects to award at least one center before the end of 2011 and subsequently launch in 2012.
