A data sheet from Symantec's website describes its managed PKI service
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) --Security solutions provider Symantec (http://www.symantec.com/) announced on Thursday that it has issued more than 250 million SSL certificates.

This news comes a few weeks after Symantec acquired data backup and archiving firm Clearwell Systems.
Symantec says this milestone indicates the growing importance of security certificates in smart phones, tablets and other devices.

“Hitting a quarter-billion user and device certificates is a huge milestone that reflects the success we’ve had enabling large commercial and government organizations to improve their security by leveraging certificates for strong authentication, encryption and digital signatures," Adam Geller, senior director, user authentication, Symantec said in a statement. "Symantec’s newly released Managed PKI Service will only accelerate the adoption of cloud-based certificate solutions to power the next generation of security applications and the organizations that will increasingly rely on them.”

According to the press release, managing certificates through Public Key Infrastructure is especially important because of the number of devices and cloud-based applications requiring authentication.

Symantec says its newly rebranded Symantec Managed PKI Service is built as a scalable, multi-tenant cloud-based service that helps to protect customer data.

According to Symantec, its PKI solutions will play a critical role in delivering secure communications as networking capabilities are increasingly embedded into critical infrastructure.
