Expanding Linux Portfolio, Oracle Acquires Ksplice

July 22nd, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – Making big news in the area of Linux, database management company Oracle today announced that it has acquired Ksplice, a Linux security updater.

The acquisition gives Oracle an expanded portfolio in the areas of diagnostics and security updates for Linux.
Oracle offers its own open source operating system known as Oracle Linux, which the company provides for free.
However, the company provides various support through paid services.
Financial terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed in a press release on the matter.

Commenting on the acquisiton, Ksplice CEO Jeff Arnold stated, “Ksplice’s technology will be able to take Oracle’s kernel updates and transform them into zero downtime updates that provide always-accessible systems with no reboot necessary.
This results in improved system availability and security as well as reduced operational costs for the customer.”

Ksplice is known for its Ksplice Uptrack, a program that advertises itself as having zero downtime, while providing users with a way to update Linux without having to reboot their systems.
Ksplice’s site lists the advantages of not having to reboot as avoiding downtime, saving time, and avoiding security problems.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) --  Oracle (http://www.oracle.com/) announced on Wednesday it will acquire storage solutions provider Pillar Data Systems (http://www.pillardata.com/). The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Expected to close in July, the acquisition will help Oracle deliver a complete line of storage products that runs the company's software faster and more efficiently.

Based in San Jose, Pillar Data Systems is a privately-held company that serves nearly 600 customers across 24 countries.

The company's storage technology is particularly well-suited for hosting providers, as it provides highly scalable SAN Block I/O storage systems that offer high performance scaling characteristics.

As a result, the company has taken a proactive role in promoting the storage system to the hosting industry. One of these ways is by sponsoring the upcoming WHIR Event in Montreal, held at Koko Restaurant + Bar.
Oracle president Mark Hurd and executive vice president of systems John Fowler will provide an Oracle Storage strategy update on Thursday.

Those individuals who are interested in learning more about how Oracle is redefining storage can register for the live event and webcast here.

"The acquisition of Pillar Data Systems provides Oracle with a compelling SAN storage architecture that complements our core strengths," said Fowler. "Customers can optimize the value of their Oracle applications, database, middleware and operating system software by running on Oracle's storage solutions."

Pillar Data Systems is majority owned by Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. The evaluation and negotiation of the deal was led by an independent committee of Oracle's board of directors.

The acquisition is structured as a 100 percent earn-out with no up-front payment. Oracle does not expect that the amount of the earn-out or its potential impact will impact Oracle's results of operations or financial position.

Earlier this year, Oracle launched its Oracle Cloud File System to enable storage pooling through an elastic storage cloud.

$2.6 Billion Sought by Oracle in Suit against Google

June 29th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – Database management company Oracle recently filed a new document in U.S. District Court specifying that they’re seeking 2.6 billion  from Google.

Oracle claims that Google has ripped off its patent designs related to Java. The company filed the lawsuit against Google in August of last year.

Earlier this month, Oracle had estimated it deserved an amount that was in the billions, but the exact price they were seeking was not specified until yesterday.

Google has previously challenged Oracle’s methodology and claimed that it should owe the database management company less.

Meanwhile, Reuters has estimated that a trial could start sometime in November.
The lawsuit has been based out of California and Oracle is headquartered in Redwood Shores, CA.
