Security Provider Symantec Surpasses More Than 250 Million Certificates Issued

By Nicole Henderson,July 28, 2011

A data sheet from Symantec's website describes its managed PKI service
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) --Security solutions provider Symantec (http://www.symantec.com/) announced on Thursday that it has issued more than 250 million SSL certificates.

This news comes a few weeks after Symantec acquired data backup and archiving firm Clearwell Systems.
Symantec says this milestone indicates the growing importance of security certificates in smart phones, tablets and other devices.

“Hitting a quarter-billion user and device certificates is a huge milestone that reflects the success we’ve had enabling large commercial and government organizations to improve their security by leveraging certificates for strong authentication, encryption and digital signatures," Adam Geller, senior director, user authentication, Symantec said in a statement. "Symantec’s newly released Managed PKI Service will only accelerate the adoption of cloud-based certificate solutions to power the next generation of security applications and the organizations that will increasingly rely on them.”

According to the press release, managing certificates through Public Key Infrastructure is especially important because of the number of devices and cloud-based applications requiring authentication.

Symantec says its newly rebranded Symantec Managed PKI Service is built as a scalable, multi-tenant cloud-based service that helps to protect customer data.

According to Symantec, its PKI solutions will play a critical role in delivering secure communications as networking capabilities are increasingly embedded into critical infrastructure.

Symantec Buys Data Backup Firm Clearwell Systems, Partners with Security Firm SMX

By Nicole Henderson,July 11, 2011

Clearwell Systems is now part of Symantec
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Security firm Symantec (http://www.symantec.com/) made two announcements on Monday, including the completion of an acquisition of data backup and archiving firm Clearwell Systems (http://www.clearwellsystems.com/) and a partnership with cloud-based email security firm SMX Limited (http://www.smxemail.com/).
According to the press release, Clearwell's archiving, backup and eDiscovery solutions provide customers with cost-savings and reduce risks while providing litigation, investigations and regulatory compliance.

Symantec says this acquisition will provide future product integration opportunities with Symantec backup and security. Last year, Symantec acquired VeriSign's security business.

“With this acquisition, we will help customers reduce costs across all phases of information management for litigation, investigations and regulatory compliance,” Deepak Mohan, senior vice president, Information Management Group, Symantec said in a statement.  “By adding Clearwell’s market leading eDiscovery solution to Symantec’s information management portfolio, we further increase Symantec’s ability to get the right information, to the right people, at the right time.”

The amount of the acquisition was not disclosed by the companies.

Symantec's partnership with SMX will integrate Symantec's Brightmail software into the SMX anti-spam and anti-virus cloud-based solution, according to a separate press release.

SMX anti-spam and anti-virus solution is designed for large international systems integration vendors and ISPs.

Jess Ball, SMX co-founder and CEO, says the partnerrship is an opportunity to deliver a world class cloud-based email security service that is deployed on a customer's own infrastructure.

"The demand for partners to offer cloud-based services is growing at a rapid pace. Symantec is focused on providing its partners with superior value, market leading technologies and sustainable revenue opportunities to help meet this demand," David Dzienciol, vice president, SMB and Channels, Asia Pacific and Japan, Symantec said in a statement. "The SMX partnership demonstrates how partners can leverage Symantec's technology to deliver innovative new cloud-based services offered by international system integrators and ISPs."

Launched in 2006, SMX is growing rapidly in emerging markets including India and Southeast Asia, according to the press release.

Symantec Report Finds Spam Accounts for 73 Percent of June Email

By Nicole Henderson,June 28, 2011
A map shows the largest country sources for spam

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Security firm Symantec (http://www.symantec.com/) announced on Tuesday that it has released its intelligence report for June 2011, combining for the first time research from its Symantec.cloud MessageLabs Intelligence Report and the Symantec State of Spam and Phishing. The report finds that spam is at its lowest level since November 2008.

According to the report, spam accounted for nearly 73 percent of email in June and more than 75 percent of this spam was sent by botnets. The global ratio of spam in email traffic decreased by 3 percent since May 2011.
“Despite the decrease in botnet spam this month, they should still be considered a dangerous force on the Internet.
Cybercriminals continue to use botnets to conduct distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS), carry out fraudulent click-thrus on unsuspecting websites for financial gain, host illegal Web site content on infected computers, harvest personal data from infected users and install spyware to track victims' activities online,” Paul Wood, senior intelligence analyst, Symantec.cloud said in a statement.

Symantec says that spam relating to pharmaceutical products accounted for 40 percent of all spam in June. The report finds adult spam continues to grow.

“Spam remains a huge problem and spam levels continue to be unpredictable. Following the disruption of Rustock in March, approximately 36.9 billion spam emails were in circulation each day during April.
This number rose to 41.7 billion in May, before falling back to 39.2 billion in June," May added.
"During the same period last year, spam accounted for 121.5 billion emails in global circulation each day, equivalent to 89.3 percent of email traffic in June 2010.
Over a twelve month period, a drop of 68.7 percent in volume resulted in a fall of only 16.4 percentage points in the overall global spam rate."

According to the report, a new spam tactic being used by pharmaceutical firms is using the prefix "Wiki" to promote fake pharmaceutical products.

Saudi Arabia was the most spammed country, according to Symantec, with a spam rate of 82 percent. In the US, 74 percent of email was spam. 72 percent of email in Canada was spam.

Phishing levels in the US were 1 in 1,270 and virus levels for email-borne malware were 1 in 805.

The public sector was the most targeted by phishing activity in June, with 1 in 84 emails containing a phishing attack.

Security Firm Symantec Report Finds Spammers Using Fake URL-Shorteners

By Nicole Henderson,May 30, 2011
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Data backup and security provider Symantec (http://www.symantec.com/) released its May MessageLabs Intelligence Report on Tuesday that finds spammers are establishing their own fake URL-shortening services to redirect URLs.

Last week, UK Web host the UK2 Group named former MessageLabs CEO Adrian Chamberlain the non-executive director of the board.

According to the report, spam in May has increased by 2.9 percentage points from April.

Symantec says shortened links are disguised in spam emails as legitimate URL-shortened links, and then the URL leads to "a shortened-URL on the spammer's fake URL-shortening website, which in turn redirects to the spammer's own website."

April's report also recognized the increase of shortened URLs as a spamming activity known as click-fraud.

“MessageLabs Intelligence has been monitoring the way that spammers abuse URL-shortening services for a number of years using a variety of different techniques so it was only a matter of time before a new technique appeared,” Paul Wood, MessageLabs Intelligence senior analyst said in a statement. “What is unique about the new URL-shortening sites is that the spammers are treating them as ‘stepping stones’ – a link between public URL-shortening services and the spammers’ own sites.”

According to the report, the new domains were registered several months before they were used "to evade detection by legitimate URL-shortening services."

The report also finds that in the US 76.4 percent of email was spam. The UK and Canada had similar ratios. Russia was the most spammed in May with a spam rate of 82.2 percent.

Phishing activity in May decreased by 0.06 percentage points. The global ratio of email-borne viruses also dropped 0.143 percent, according to the report. Virus levels were one in 540.3 in the US.

The most spammed industry sector was the wholesale sector with a spam rate of 80.2 percent, and the public sector was the most targeted industry for malware with one in 28.9 emails blocked as malicious.

Symantec Finds Facebook Leaks

May 11th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) - Symantec, the online security firm, has found that around 100,000 Facebook applications have been sharing users’ access information, thus opening up the possibility other advertisers could have accessed user information.

The problem has to do with applications gaining access to users’ access tokens, usually taken when users install the Facebook apps. The tokens were usually taken with users’ consent with the intent of helping the applications function appropriately. However, having such access to the tokens could enable some applications and advertisers to access Facebook user information, profiles, photos, and wall posts.
In their report on the matter, Symantec stated, “We estimate that over the years, hundreds of thousands of applications may have inadvertently leaked millions of access tokens to third parties”.

Responding to the matter, Facebook posted on its blog yesterday, “We have been working with Symantec to identity issues in our authentication flow to ensure that they are more secure.

Symantec SSL Certificates Used by 70 Percent of Websites on Alexa Netcraft Survey

By Nicole Henderson, March 25, 2011

Symantec's new Express Renewal feature eliminates the need to submit a Certificate Signing Request, as shown here

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- SSL certificate provider Symantec (www.symantec.com) announced on Friday that its SSL certificates are found on more than 70 percent of the Internet's top 1,000 websites, according to the March 2011 Alexa Netcraft Index.
This announcement comes a week after Symantec added two new features to simplify the renewal process of its SSL certificates.

Symantec's SSL brands include VeriSign, GeoTrust, Thawte, RapidSSL and TC Trust Center.
“As organizations more fully appreciate the variety and severity of online threats, the need for SSL-secured web sessions, at more touch points across the Internet, will become more and more apparent," Fran Rosch, vice president of Trust Services at Symantec said in a stayement. "Online leaders seeking to maintain trust in their brands will continue to work with Symantec on the strength of its brands' reputations for strong encryption, innovative services and world-class technical support. When it comes to building trust online, business will continue to come to Symantec."

Recently, IT security provider Comodo revealed that a Registration Authority located in Southern Europe was hacked, leading to nine rogue SSL certificates on seven domains.
The Alexa Netcraft SSL Index cross-references the Netcraft SSL survey with the Alexa Top Sites list, which ranks the 1 million most visited sites by popularity.

According to the press release, more than 100,000 websites display the VeriSign seal by deploying VeriSign SSL, VeriSign EV SSL or VeriSign Trust Seal solutions.
Symantec says the VeriSign seal is viewed up to 650 million times a day "as the most popular and recognized security mark in the world."

Symantec Adds SSL Certificates Renewal Features for Customers

By Justin Lee, March 10, 2011
Symantec's Express Renewal feature eliminates the need to subimit a Certificate Signing Request, as shown here

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- IT security solutions provider Symantec (www.symantec.com) announced on Thursday it has added two new features designed to simplify the renewal process for SSL certificates.
Customers who have deployed VeriSign SSL certificates can fully automate the SSL certificate renewal process for up to six years.
The new features make Symantec the industry's only certificate authority to offer this kind of renewal option to renew and manage SSL Certificates.
Symantec's Express Renewal feature eliminates the need to submit a Certificate Signing Request or re-install a VeriSign SSL certificate when it approaches renewal time.
Now when a certificate is up for renewal, the SSL customer automatically pays for a new validity period.
Secure Site Pro Certificates for up to six years for VeriSign Extended Validation SSL Certificates for up to two years.
To further automate the renewal process, Symantec's VeriSign SSL customers can activate the AutoPay Renewal Service upon their initial enrollment to ensure that SSL protection continues without interruption.
"With Express Renewal and AutoPay, Symantec has become the industry's only SSL Certificate Authority to eliminate the pain of renewing certificates," says Michael Lin, senior director of trust services at Symantec. "The features greatly reduce the possibility of unexpected certificate expirations -- and best of all, customers don't have to do a thing. Website operators now have the same flexibility to pay for 1-3 year terms but with added ease of management."
Express Renewal is available for free for VeriSign SSL and EV SSL customers who submit a minimum 2048-bit certificate signing request.
Customers can activate and deactivate AutoPay at any time, for any reason and without penalty, for the entire duration they hold their VeriSign SSL or EV SSL Certificate.

Facebook Storefront Service ShopFans to Offer Symantec Security Products

By Nicole Henderson, February 25, 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Security firm Symantec (www.symantec.com) announced on Friday that it has partnered with social commerce firm Adgregate Markets (www.adgregate.com) to offer SSL certificates and the VeriSign Trust Seal to customers of ShopFans, a Facebook application for creating e-commerce stores within the social networking platform.
According to the announcement, stores created with ShopFans can enable transactions in Facebook without sacrificing security and privacy using VeriSign SSL certificates and VeriSign Trust Seal.
ShopFans was built as a native Facebook Platform application so brands can tie directly into all of the infrastructure of Facebook, including News Feed stories promoting Wish Lists, Likes, Shares, gift registries, private and flash sales, loyalty rewards, social badging and more.
Adgregate says 92 percent of chief marketing officers at leading retailers are focusing marketing efforts on Facebook, and that a recent report found 71 percent of users said they are more likely to buy after "liking" the brand.
“Retailers and their Facebook fans deserve the most secure solution available — and that’s what they get from Symantec and Adgregate, two leaders in social commerce security,” Henry Wong, CEO Adgregate said in a statement.
Adgregate says ShopFans has a combined total online annual sales of over $8.5 billion.
“The attraction to Facebook as a platform for commerce is irresistible, but retailers must ensure that their Facebook presence is one that establishes the levels of trust necessary to convert fans into customers – and to keep them coming back,” Fran Rosch, vice president of Trust Services at Symantec said. “We’re delighted to work with an innovator like Adgregate, whose vision for social commerce is helping to take the Facebook experience in an entirely new direction. By displaying the VeriSign Trust seal, Facebook stores created with ShopFans will transform more browsers into buyers.”
The VeriSign Trust Seal confirms the identity of the site operator as independently authenticated by Symantec. The sites are scanned daily for malware by Symantec, and search engines display the seal next to the name in the search results. VeriSign says its certificates and trust seal help drive traffic to online stores, and build loyal relationships with customers.
Last week Symantec launched the new version of its endpoint protection security.
