Anonymous Hacks Turkish Government Websites to Protest Internet Censorship

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Following a hack this week by Redhack that affected more than 1000 Turkish websites, Anonymous has hacked an additional 74 Turkish government websites in what the group is calling "Turkish Takedown Thursday."

The hack is part of the greater AntiSec movement that targets corporations, governments and law enforcement. The Turkish government was target in this case because of its new Internet filtering rules set to be enforced in August.

74 websites were defaced with a message of protest, according to a statement. Data from an additional 100 websites in Turkey was also leaked.

A report by PCWorld says the websites include medical-related sites but do not appear to include websites of key government ministries.

According to the report, the filtering system is four-tiered and includes options for family, children, domestic or standard. While the government claims the filters are in response to requests for more Internet safety, many Turkish people consider the system one of censorship. The filters are to be in place by August 22, PCWorld says, and will require Internet users to select a filter before browsing.

Redhack says its hack from earlier this week was in part to support Operation AntiSec, but also to comemmorate the 18th anniversary of the Sivas Massacre where more than 30 intellectuals were killed by radical Islamists.

The group hacked hundreds of websites owned by Adnan Oktar, who Redhack says "is responsible of forced shutdown of lots of sites in Turkey."

"It has been our honor to show our reaction in the name of our people, to stop this vile bigoted man who uses his estate and his money for his paranoid and fascist ideas, while we are engaged in the activities of AntiSec," Redhack said in a statement.

"These attacks have taken place to send a clear message to the authorities and the canines of the system that we are still strong and will do everything in our power to raise our voice against the censorship laws which are an attack to our human rights. We will act together with AntiSec and Anons to continue our fight against the hands that are reaching to silence our internet."

Earlier this week, hacker group The Script Kiddies hijacked Fox News politics Twitter account. The group tweeted false reports of Obama's death. This hack was alleged to be part of AntiSec as well.

Colocation Firm Telehouse Opens New Istanbul Data Center

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- UK IT infrastructure services provider Telehouse  (www.telehouse.net) announced on Monday that it has opened its new data center in Istanbul, Turkey in partnership with local telecommunications firm Teknotel Telekomünikasyon.

This announcement comes a week after Telehouse America completed its New York International Internet Exchange expansion into its New York data center.

The facility is in Kozyatagi is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, according to the press release.
"Turkey is an extremely important market for us, bridging both Europe and Asia. In working with Teknotel we have found a partner with the expertise, focus and willingness to carry the Telehouse brand," Andrew Fray, business development director at Telehouse said in a statement. "Our customers can be confident to expand and place their infrastructure in Telehouse Istanbul which, like all Telehouse facilities around the World, specializes in providing the highest levels of security, power management and cooling. It is important for companies to locate their critical infrastructure in data centers where risk is carefully managed especially in Istanbul which faces some significant physical risk factors, such as flooding and earthquakes."
"Telehouse continues to open data centers in countries where we find a local partner with the capability to run superb facilities. We are pleased to extend the Telehouse footprint to Turkey and can now serve the needs of customers and partners in 21 major cities globally," he added.
According to the press release, the Istanbul data center is supplied by dual power feeds and will provide 4-5 KW per rack.
"Opening a Telehouse facility in Istanbul is a superb opportunity for us to extend our range of products and services in the Turkish market," Alper Selcuk, general manager of Teknotel said in a statement. "We are well-known for delivering communication solutions to our corporate customers and, with our Telehouse facility, we can now offer carrier neutral colocation too. Telehouse says it is planning to open a second Istanbul data center in 2012 with Teknotel.
