By Justin Lee, July 14, 2011

One of IBM's existing data centers in Makuhari, Japan

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- IT giant IBM (www.ibm.com) announced on Thursday it has expanded its cloud computing services for customers in Japan and in the Asia Pacific region with the opening of a new IBM Cloud Data Center in Japan and a dedicated data center for LotusLive, IBM's cloud collaboration service.

The new data centers will extend IBM's globally-integrated cloud delivery network of cloud computing centers that serve in over 50 countries around the world with centers based in Singapore, Germany, Canada, and the United State.

Additionally and 13 global cloud labs, of which seven are based in Asia Pacific – China, India, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore, which opened in April.

Located in Makuhari, Japan, the new IBM Cloud Data Center delivers IBM's SmartCloud enterprise-class services which include a broad range of secure managed services, to run diverse workloads across multiple delivery methods both public and private.

For the first time, enterprise clients in Japan can select key characteristics of a public, private and hybrid cloud to match workload requirements from simple Web infrastructure to complex business processes, along five dimensions, including security and isolation, availability and performance, technology platforms, maanagement Support and deployment, and payment and billing.

The data center also has new offerings that will increase customer selection with the potential for end-to-end management of service delivery from the server and operating system to the application and process layer.

It allows customers to expand production along with other workloads like websites, batch processing, development and test and other initiatives while reducing deployment time from days to minutes via automation and rapid provisioning with over 30 percent reduction in costs versus traditional environments.

IBM also announced it will open a dedicated data center for its cloud-based collaboration services suite, LotusLive, in Japan.

The data center, which will be available later this year, is designed to make it easier for customers in Japan to more to the cloud.

LotusLive offers integrated social collaboration tools that combine a company's business social network with capabilities such as file storing and sharing, instant messaging, Web conferencing and activity management.

This secure integration allows users to share and edit information, host online meetings and manage activities easily inside and outside company boundaries.

The Japan data center is designed to help improve network performance and increase business opportunities for LotusLive users.

More importantly, the facility allows those client's who cannot take their data outside the country because of security and regulatory compliance are able to work in a security-rich cloud environment.

IBM Launches New Cloud-based Disaster Recovery and Backup Services

By Justin Lee, June 20, 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- IBM (http://www.ibm.com/) announced on Monday it has launched IBM SmartCloud Resilience services (http://www.ibmbusinesscontinuityindex.com/), its new cloud services that enable clients to protect, store and quickly retrieve critical data in the event of a disaster.

The new services allow customers to protect their data and applications faster, cheaper and in a more flexible manner than in the past with a traditional data center environment.

Previously, companies created many images of servers and applications operating at multiple data center sites, which would only add to the complexity and cost of IT management.

The IBM SmartCloud now offers companies with different sizes of virtual and physical server recovery service that continuously replicates their applications and all associated data on a secure cloud infrastructure.

This enables them to get their business up and running in minutes after experiencing an outage in their IT infrastructure.

IBM's cloud allows clients to securely manage and balance workloads, lower application and system downtime, and reduce data loss.

"Now more than ever, companies are relying on a massive amount of data to run their businesses, storing it longer and retrieving it as needed," said Rick Ruiz, general manager of IBM's business continuity and resiliency services. "This creates a need for a business resilience strategy that will ensure continuous operation and create a competitive advantage to enable growth opportunities. Our new cloud services bring flexibility, scalability, and rapid provisioning to help accomplish that."

The new services also include IBM SmartCloud Virtualized Server Recovery, which increases the reliability and efficiency of recovery to help practically eliminate business downtime, and minimize data loss.
Users can access the services through a Web-based to rapidly bring back their business on IBM's recovery infrastructure in case of outage, replicating both server software and associated data continuously.

Another key service, IBM SmartCloud Archive, is designed to meet strict privacy and regulatory compliance, from advanced search and indexing and retrieval, to eDiscovery capabilities.

The service provides clients with an advanced document and records management system to deal with structured and unstructured content, control over rising data storage costs, and improved availability of critical business content.

The new services complement IBM's existing SmartCloud Managed Backup offering which provides flexible, automatic management and monitoring of backup and recovery processes.

This service can be combined with the Archive and Virtualized services for storage, data protection and replication.

Other cloud-based business continuity tools include the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Suite for Unified Recovery 6.2, which provides disaster recovery software that can be enabled as a cloud storage option.

The two new services will be available starting July 19 in certain markets as a part of the IBM SmartCloud portfolio, which consists of enterprise cloud technologies and services offerings for private, public and hybrid clouds based on IBM hardware, software, services and best practices.

IBM Makes First Graphene Circuit

June 13th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – IBM has successfully created the world’s first grapheme circuit that is capable of hosting frequencies that go up to 10 GHz, the company announced Friday.
Graphene, an allotrope of Carbon contains the thickness of an atom.
The circuit itself consists of a broadband radio-frequency transmitter. To function, the graphene circuit analyzes input frequencies and determines their sum and difference. The circuit then sends off new signals based upon the information. Analysts believe this could give wireless providers the ability to drastically extend network ranges.

In a press release, T.C. Chen, IBM Research’s Vice President of Science & Technology stated, “This research breakthrough has the potential to increase the performance of communication devices that enable people to interact with greater efficiency.”
Graphene has proven particularly difficult to work with in the past as it doesn’t function with metal too well. However, to work around the problem, researchers added a protective layer of polymer around the actual graphene inside the circuit.
IBM previously built a transistor made of graphene and demonstrated it early last year.

By Justin Lee, March 07, 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- IBM (www.ibm.com) announced on Monday it has invested $38 million in a new IBM Asia Pacific Cloud Computing Data Center in Singapore.
The announcement comes a couple months after IBM revealed it would be collaborating with China-based Range Technology Development to build the largest cloud computing data center in Asia, located in China's Hebei province.
The new facility will extend IBM's globally via its integrated cloud delivery network with centers in Germany, Canada and the United States.
The company also has 13 global cloud labs, of which seven are based in Asia Pacific, including China, India, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore.
Set to open in April, the new data center will make available IBM's comprehensive cloud services and technology portfolio via the company's cloud delivery infrastructure.
These services are designed to help clients increase flexibility and agility, accelerate time to market, reduce costs, and increase security and compliance of public cloud environments.
"IBM's investment in our Asia Pacific Cloud Computing Data Centre in Singapore reflects the increase in demand for cloud solutions and services by our clients in the region," says  Paul Moung, VP of cloud computing at IBM Growth Markets. "The Centre will provide the highest security standards and capabilities to minimize capital expenditure and reduce operational costs."
The first offering to be available at the IBM Asia Pacific Cloud Computing Data Center will be from IBM's infrastructure as a service cloud portfolio, which is designed to provide rapid access to security-rich, enterprise-class virtual server environments and is well suited for development and test activities and other dynamic workloads.
IBM Software Group and third party companies will also offer a suite of software with a range of payment models designed for mid-size and large enterprises and ISVs, including application development, functional and non-functional testing, and dynamic workloads
