Go Daddy Appoints Former Whitehouse Advisor Deputy General Counsel for Global Policy

By Justin Lee, August 02, 2011
Andrew Kline, deputy general counsel for global policy at Go Daddy

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Go Daddy (www.godaddy.com) announced on Tuesday it has appointed former Obama policy advisor and attorney Andrew Kline as its new deputy general counsel for global policy.

The move comes a week after Go Daddy officially launched its 4th Generation cloud-based hosting services.

In this position, Kline will help Go Daddy expand internationally, as well as combat online illegal activities such as rogue Internet pharmacies and copyright infringement.

Kline will be based in Washington, DC and joins vice president for government relations Martha Johnston, who joined Go Daddy in December of 2005.

"After seeing Go Daddy's commitment and pledge to 'do the right thing,' I was inspired ... and knew I could go into the private sector and make a difference," said Kline. "Go Daddy has demonstrated its commitment to keeping the Internet safe in a way that gets results and I want to be a part of that team."

Kline, who is a former federal prosecutor, has spent many years focused on Internet enforcement issues.

As the chief of staff and senior advisor in the Office of US Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement, he was responsible for cracking down on counterfeit pharmaceuticals and copyright and trademark infringement, many with links to organized crime, gangs and terrorism.

"Andrew's record speaks for itself," said Go Daddy CEO and founder Bob Parsons. "Like our General Counsel Christine Jones, Andrew is an attorney who knows how to get things done, a leader and a person who works to make a difference ... and as fast as the Internet is growing, Go Daddy is going to stay ahead of it."

Go Daddy recently announced its plans to enter into partnership with KKR, Silver Lake and Technology Crossover Ventures in an investment reportedly estimated at around $2.3 billion.

Web Host Go Daddy Officially Launches Cloud Hosting

By Nicole Henderson,July 27, 2011

A screenshot from Go Daddy's website shows the detailed 4GH plans
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) --Web hosting provider and domain registrar Go Daddy (http://www.godaddy.com/) announced on Wednesday that it has officially launched its 4th Generation cloud-based hosting.
This launch comes a month after Go Daddy announced its highly anticipated acquisition by KKR, Silver Lake and Technology Crossover Ventures. Though the deal is not completed yet, the strategic investment is reported to be in the range of $2 billion.

A report by GigaOm last month speculated Go Daddy's cloud hosting would launch in July though it called the service "Data Center on Demand."

Accodring to the press release, Go Daddy was "in the cloud before the term was coined" but 4GH is the next level of cloud services.

Go Daddy is a household name for domain registration and web hosting but this is the company's first major step into the cloud space. The huge demographic of customers that Go Daddy reaches will likely ensure high adoption, especially considering it already has 9.4 million customers and manages more than 49 million domain names.

In February 2010, Go Daddy launched cloud-based Mac OS X web hosting.
Accodring to the press release, Go Daddy was "in the cloud before the term was coined" but 4GH is the next level of cloud services.

Go Daddy says its cloud hosting offering is a result of customer feedback and demand for more scalability than shared hosting providers.

Customers using 4GH receive proprietary dynamic traffic management, dynamic defense management and dynamic server management are equipped with "near-enterprise level" service, according to Go Daddy.

Currently, 4GH hosting offers no support for Java, ColdFusion and FrontPage Extensions. It also does not support streaming video, email hosting or multiple clients like cPanel or Parallels Plesk Panel's client configuration though it allows for multiple domains to be hosted on the same account. It also does not support Microsoft Access database.

"4GH was created to help our customers succeed," Go Daddy CEO and founder Bob Parsons said in a statement. "For example, a customer would be mentioned on Oprah or CNN and suddenly their web server had more traffic than it was designed to handle. We'd quickly move them to a dedicated server to protect them, along with our other shared hosting customers. It was like an epiphany - we needed a new platform that could react immediately. You could say, with 4GH our customers who suddenly find themselves in the limelight won't miss their '15 minutes of fame.'"

According to a report by Data Center Knowledge, Go Daddy automatically scales capacity at no additional cost and does not charge for additional bandwidth, unlike its competitors.
The plans start at $4.99 per month for an economy version. The deluxe plan is $7.99 per month or the ultimate plan is $14.99 per month.

Go Daddy says its 4GH web hosting is backed by its 24/7 "Site Defenders" team that prevents cyber attacks and detects website vulnerabilities.

GoDaddy.com Sold for 2.5 Billion

July 3rd, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – Go Daddy Group, Inc., the parent company for GoDaddy.com has sold a majority stake to a group of private equity firms for an estimated $2.5 billion. As reported last week, the group is led by KKR & Co., Silver Lake Technology Crossover Ventures and will assume all of Go Daddy Inc.’s debt as well as its assets.

As the largest domain registrar in the world, GoDaddy boasts over 9.4 million customers and manages more than 48 million domain names.
Despite this, the company has reported consecutive annual losses with growth only during the latest fiscal year.

For at least the time being, CEO Robert Parsons will remain in that position, and has stated the company’s plans to expand its offerings by increasing its international presence and moving its hosting services into the cloud-based services.
Parsons founded the company in 1997 and in 2006 failed in his attempt to go public, citing poor market conditions when withdrawing its IPO.
Whether this acquisition is considered an investment or a purchase, Parsons is reported to remain GoDaddy’s largest single shareholder while the new private equity group becomes the company’s majority investors.

Silver Lake has a great track record of flipping and growing Internet companies, with the sale of Skype Global for $8.5 billion to Microsoft Corporation, after purchasing it from EBay two years ago for only $2 billion.
KKR and Silver Lake are familiar partners with their 2005 group investment of Avago Technologies, while TCV leads a group of firms that has invested a reported $135 million in Facebook.
Silver Lake and TCV are co-investors in the leading daily deal site Groupon and the social-gaming company Zynga.

Web Host Go Daddy Gets Investment from KKR, Silver Lake

By Liam Eagle,July 01, 2011

Go Daddy's marketing prominently features "Go Daddy Girls," including racecar driver Danica Patrick

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Coming shortly after rumors the company was about to be sold, web hosting provider Go Daddy (http://www.godaddy.com/) announced late on Friday, in a statement posted to its website, that it had “signed a definitive agreement to receive a strategic investment and enter into a partnership with KKR, Silver Lake and Technology Crossover Ventures.”

Details of the investment were not disclosed, however rumors published last week by Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal and others, which called the deal an acquisition, and identified KKR and Silver Lake as buyers, put the price tag for the company between $2 billion and $2.5 billion.
A Friday report by Reuters also referred to Go Daddy being “bought,” for $2.25 billion, including debt.

"I've always said we would make a move like this when the right deal with the right partners could help us do the right thing for our customers and our employees," said Go Daddy CEO and Founder Bob Parsons, quoted in the announcement. "This is it! We are partnering with KKR, Silver Lake and TCV because of their technology expertise, their understanding of web based businesses and because their values align with ours. We believe, together, we will take the company to the next level, especially when it comes to accelerating international growth."

Founded in 1996 by the outspoken Parsons, Go Daddy rose to the top of the domain registration and shared hosting markets over the last decade through price competition and some shrewd marketing, that included several controversial Super Bowl ads that drove a tremendous amount of attention to the company.

In 2006, Go Daddy filed the initial papers for an IPO, but later withdrew its filing due to poor market conditions.

Go Daddy was rumored to be for sale in September of 2010, following a news story appearing in the Wall Street Journal. The details were more vague at the time, but the valuation was in the range of $1 billion.

If the rumors are true, including the suggestion that Go Daddy passed on the September 2010 deal to wait for a better valuation, the plan appears to have paid off.

The speculation that followed the sale rumor during the past week has included optimism around the fact that Go Daddy serves the small business market, which is booming in the US, along with concerns that the company trades in such low-margin commodities as shared hosting, domain names and SSL certificates.

In late June, it was reported that Go Daddy was planning the launch of a cloud computing service, called Data Center on Demand, sometime in July. The building of a cloud computing offering (a hot commodity in the investment community) may have been a step on the road to Go Daddy completing Friday’s investment, or in securing a more desirable valuation.

"In Go Daddy, we are pleased to be partnering with a high-growth market leader and an outstanding team," said Herald Chen, head of KKR's software and Internet effort, also quoted in the announcement. "Building on Go Daddy's exceptional customer service and loyal customer base, we believe there is significant opportunity to expand the current portfolio of products and services as well as accelerate growth internationally."

Web Host Go Daddy Rumored to Sell for $2 Billion

By Nicole Henderson, June 24, 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider and domain registrar Go Daddy (http://www.godaddy.com/) is close to being acquired by private equity firms KKR & Co (http://www.kkr.com/) and Silver Lake Partners (http://www.silverlake.com/) for between $2 billion and $2.5 billion, according to several reports on Friday.

At this point, the deal has not been confirmed by either party. Reports on the Wall Street Journal and Reuters say a source close to the matter has said the deal could close as early as next week.

Go Daddy initially shopped around for buyers in September 2010, but Bloomberg says the company was looking for a higher evaluation. In September the number sat around $1 billion.

Bloomberg says that the company is an attractive buy because its primary customer base is small businesses, a market that has seen tremendous growth in the past few years.

Go Daddy is arguably the most well-known Web hosting company outside of the industry, as its wide-reaching  marketing campaigns anchored by flashy Superbowl commercials and spokeswomen including racecar driver Danica Patrick and personal trainer Jillian Michaels of Biggest Loser fame.
Recently, reports surfaced that say Go Daddy is set to launch its cloud computing service in July. This move could increase its customer base even more as consumers look for ways to implement cloud infrastructures for their small businesses.

If this deal went through, it would be the largest acquisition of a Web hosting provider.

Go Daddy to Launch Cloud Computing Service in July

By Nicole Henderson, June 20, 2011
A chart from a marketing brochure shows the pricing model for each plan

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web host and domain registrar Go Daddy (http://www.godaddy.com/) is set to launch its cloud computing service called Data Center On Demand, according to a report by GigaOm last week.

The service is set to launch in July, and is currently in limited release phase while the infrastructure is built out.

According to a marketing brochure acquired by GigaOm, GoDaddy will offer three plans including economy, deluxe and ultimate. The plans range from $49.99 per month to $279.99 per month, respectively, with discounts available for prepaid options.

The economy plan offers one server, 1 GB RAM and 40GB storage with unlimited indbound bandwidth, 100 GB per month outbound bandwidth and other resources available a la carte. In contrast, the ultimate plan offers six servers, three with 2GB RAm and 40GB storage and three with 1GB RAM and 40GB storage.

The brochure says it is ideal for medium to large businesses, start-ups ready to experience explosive growth or web developers. GoDaddy says that its Data Center On Demand machines require technical experience and suggests companies with IT teams are needed for the service.

Go Daddy "uses Cloud.com's CloudStack private-cloud software for the resource-orchestration layer," according to the report.

According to a report by CRN, Data Center On Demand enables users to create a virtual data center with multiple servers and offers scalability, load balancers and templates for cloud environments.

Both reports speculate the offering could compete with Amazon and Rackspace clouds. Though Go Daddy hasn't confirmed this, it is a household name and is considered to be one of the top domain registrars in the US.

Recently, Go Daddy experienced a short outage after a failed software update.

By Justin Lee,  June 13, 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Go Daddy (http://www.godaddy.com/) announced on Monday it is expand its staff at its Iowa customer service center by 300 employees.

Last July, the company opened an office in Hiawatha which is located just outside of Cedar Rapids. Go Daddy says it hopes to double its staff at the office by the end of the year.

According to Lisa Sherman, recruiting manager at Go Daddy, the company is looking for individuals who have a range of educational backgrounds and experience.

About 95 percent of the 300 jobs available are in customer service. Sherman said that any individual who is passionate about business technology should apply for a position.

The company hosted a networking event and cookout last Thursday to raise awareness for the upcoming hirings, according to a report by The Gazette.

The new hirings signals a boom in the hosting market of Iowa. Recently, two other hosting providers announced they would be expanding its workforce in another popular hosting market over the next couple years.

Rackspace plans to triple its workforce in Austin over the next few years, hosting its "Rackerpalooza" job fair on Saturday to promote the hirings.

Additionally, HostGator is set to hire about 250 employees in Austin over the next 12 months.

Web Host Go Daddy Says Outage Due to Software Upgrade

By Nicole Henderson,June 14, 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider and domain registrar Go Daddy (http://www.godaddy.com/) experienced an outage on its website Monday after a software update went wrong, according to a report by Data Center Knowledge on Tuesday.

This downtime comes a week after Go Daddy announced it now protects more than 500,000 websites with its SSL certificates.

Go Daddy's home page was offline for approximately three hours on Monday evening though visitors were redirected to a mobile version of the site that was available.

“We made some changes to our website, and those updates failed,” Neil Warner, chief information officer for Go Daddy said in a statement. “As a result, www.GoDaddy.com went down. No customer account information was compromised. This was not an attack on Go Daddy servers. We caused the issue, not someone else.”

The report says that the mobile redirection enabled users to continue to manage domain names and transactions.

Go Daddy apologized for the length of the outage, saying it was longer than appropriate.

“My team is investigating what went wrong with our site update process so we can avoid an issue like this in the future,” Warner stated.

Also on Monday, Go Daddy announced it was expanding its staff at its Iowa customer service center by 300 employees.

Web Host Go Daddy Sponsors Fifth Straight Indianapolis 500 Broadcast

By Nicole Henderson,May 27, 2011

A screenshot of Go Daddy's website shows Danica Patrick

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web host and domain registrar Go Daddy (http://www.godaddy.com/) announced on Tuesday that it is sponsoring the Indianapolis 500 broadcast on Sunday for the fifth consecutive year.

According to many reports this week, the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 could be Danica Patrick's last race before jumping full-time to NASCAR.

In 2008, the company's Go Daddy Girl became the first woman to win an IndyCar Series race. Patrick has been a spokesperson for Go Daddy since 2006.

Along with this announcement, Go Daddy is set to debut its new commercial starring Danica Patrick on the ABC broadcast on Sunday.

Following the live broadcast, viewers can see a continuation of the commercial on Go Daddy's website.
"This commercial is fun, edgy and slightly inappropriate -- it's about as GoDaddy-esque as it gets," Go Daddy CEO and founder Bob Parsons said in a statement. "This ad starts in a garage and ends up ... well, it's safe to say it puts Danica in an environment few people have ever seen her in."

Last year, Patrick placed 6th in the race.

"Bob was my good luck charm at last year's Indy," Patrick said in a statement. "As far as my new Go Daddy commercial goes, viewers are going to be guaranteed a 'sweet ride' and that's all I'm going to reveal.  You'll just have to tune in to ABC TV and then check out GoDaddy.com Sunday."

Last week Go Daddy announced that it has donated more than $4.2 million dollars to charity so far this year. Recently, Parsons visited Haiti to deliver medical supplies and oversee the use of Go Daddy's donations in the country.

Coupon Tracker Sees Spike in Web Hosts Targeting Go Daddy Outrage

By Liam Eagle, April 04, 2011
A screenshot from CouponFollow's list of elephant-related hosting and domain coupons

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- A coupon code tracking website CouponFollow (www.couponfollow.com) issued a press release this week, saying it has seen a spike in discounted offerings from web hosting providers targeting customers looking to move their accounts away from hosting giant Go Daddy in the wake of a controversial video of the company’s CEO Bob Parsons shooting and killing an elephant while on vacation in Zimbabwe.

Parsons discussed the video in a phone interview with the WHIR, in which he credited “a very vocal minority” with producing most of the objection to the video. He says he isn’t worried about a backlash, and he actually expects the company to end up with more new business because of the controversy (though he says that wasn’t why he posted the video).

CouponFollow, an in-beta site that offers to help “track coupon codes in real-time via twitter” is tracking a list of hosting and domain promotional codes specifically targeting Go Daddy.

The company is tracking several promotions, including the originally-reported offering from NameCheap, which has been promoting the coupon code “BYEBYEGD” since the video was first posted, and has reportedly appeared on Twitter more than 1,000 times, making it one of the most popular codes on the CouponFollow site. The company has extended the deadline on the coupon code several times.
"PETA helped these discounts go viral. We believe the NameCheap coupon alone has made its way to well over a million Twitter users' feeds," says CouponFollow founder Marc Mezzacca, quoted in the press release.

Notably, the NameCheap code specifically targeting Go Daddy predates the elephant video by many weeks. The first appearance of the “BYEBYEGD” discount code on Twitter was a post by “MakeInstantCash” that appeared February 3, almost two months before the elephant video appeared online.

The post reads “Go Namecheap.com for $3.99 domains! Use coupon code BYEBYEGD. Offer begins on Feb 6th, at 5:00 AM GMT and ends Feb 7th at 5:00 AM GMT.” Namecheap’s more recent promotion offers a $4.99 transfer, with 25 percent ($1) going to a charity called Save the Elephants.

It appears that NameCheap raised the price of an existing coupon code by $1, and is giving that $1 to charity, while adding a topical and controversial element to its pursuit of Go Daddy customers.

The full list of coupon codes targeting Go Daddy includes offerings from Domain.com, GreenGeeks, LunarPages and others. Many of them include charitable donations.

A word to the wise for hosting providers courting outraged customers of Go Daddy. You’re bringing on board a base of users that has already demonstrated it’s willingness to vote with its wallets, so to speak. Be careful not to make these people upset.

Web Host Go Daddy Wins Best Security Team at SC Magazine Awards

By Nicole Henderson, February 22, 2011
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Go Daddy (www.godaddy.com) announced on Wednesday that its security team has been recongnized as the IT industry's "Best Security Team" at the 14th annual SC Magazine Awards in San Francisco.
This announcement comes on the heels of Go Daddy's introduction of its Premium DNS service.
According to Go Daddy, its security team protects more than 46 million domain names and more than 8.8 million customers. The team has grown from one person to more than 50 people in its six years of operation.
"Millions of people depend on Go Daddy to be their personal IT security department, which allows our customers to focus on building their businesses and enhancing their Web presence," Go Daddy CEO and founder Bob Parsons said in a statement. "Go Daddy is working hard all day, every day to protect our customers' websites. It's an honor to see our IT Security Team recognized with this award from SC Magazine."
Go Daddy says that its Hackfest event which takes place internally is a key strategy for security effectiveness. Go Daddy explains that "the event proactively seeks out product vulnerabilities. The approach not only secures Go Daddy products, but also familiarizes the rest of the company with security processes."
Go Daddy claims its use of Security Information Management is another core aspect to its security offerings. SIM is an approach based on a security network's ability to defend itself before it is attacked.
