WordPress.com Releases Stats Regarding Global Use

(The Hosting News) – WordPress.com recently released some pretty interesting stats accounting for how many sites are hosted through the platform worldwide.

The site’s post focused primarily on stats regarding free sites hosted on the company’s WordPress.com website.

A page on the site now features an updated stat board, showing that WordPress accounts for over fifty million sites worldwide.
The post notes that about half of these include sites directly hosted on WordPress.com.
However, it’s not sure whether the rest account for those who use the platform independently provided by WordPress.org on their own server space.

As for particular stats regarding free WordPress.com blogs, WordPress.com says that every month two and half billion pages are viewed by more than 283 million people worldwide.
The site also says that “WordPress.com users produce about 500,000 new posts and 400,000 new comments on an average day.”

Another interesting stat the site reveals are the language break downs used on the platform’s various sites. The English language accounts for a high majority at 66%, followed by Spanish at 8.7%. Portuguese is the third at 6.5% while Indonesian accounts for 3.5%. Other languages used less include Italian, German, French, Russian, Vietnamese, and Swedish.
That’s also a pretty signifying stat in terms of what users of particular languages don’t use WordPress.com. Left off the top 5 list are top languages including Mandarin, Arabic, and Japanese. Overall, the platform hosts sites in more than 120 languages.

WordPress is one of the world’s most popular blogging platforms. High profile entities that use WordPress include CNN, CBS Radio and popular tech sites including GigaOM and TechCrunch.

The platform provides free blogs through WordPress.com and allows users to host WordPress software independently on their own server space by WordPress.org.

WordPress Forces Password Reset After Suspicious Activity on Plugins Detected

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Open-source blogging platform WordPress (http://www.wordpress.org/) reset passwords on Tuesday because of suspicious activity around plugins, according to a report by TechCrunch.

This announcement comes nearly two months after WordPress experienced a major DDoS attack. The attack caused disruptions for sites reliant on the platform for content, including TechCrunch.

According to the report, WordPress itself was not hacked but some plugins author accounts were.

WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg said in a blog post that after noticing the suspicious activity to plugins AddThis, WPtouch and W3 Total Cache, he decided to force-reset all passwords.

Mullenweg says the plugins contained "cleverly disguised backdoors."

"We determined the commits were not from the authors, rolled them back, pushed updates to the plugins, and shut down access to the plugin repository while we looked for anything else unsavory," he wrote in the blog post.

WordPress users who want to contribute to forums, trac or commit to a plugin or theme need to reset their password.

According to TechCrunch, the password change will affect a couple million people.

Mullenweg says WordPress is still investigating what happened and warns users to never use the same password for two different services.

Users of AddThis, WPtouch or W3 Total Cache should upgrade each to the latest version, Mullenweg says.

Hackers Gain Access To WordPress Servers

(The Hosting News) – WordPress is reviewing data logs and looking to patch up its security after the site was breached by hackers on Tuesday.

The hackers gained access to the site’s servers. Automatic, the company that runs the popular blogging site determined that the breach was low level. However, the company says there’s still a chance that the site’s source code was copied.

In a statement released on the site’s official blog, WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg noted that while most of the coding on WordPress is open source, there is still sensitive data available. Such data could go a long way in helping hackers’ motives. While it remains unclear what specific information was taken, data access could provide the hackers with premium customers’ passwords for twitter accounts and Facebook. Hackers may have also accessed customers’ API keys.
Premium customers that could be affected include such heavyweights as NASA, Flickr, and Yahoo. Sites that host WordPress on their own servers should not be affected by the breach.

Mullenweg stated, “Our investigation into this matter is ongoing and will take time to complete”. The site also urged premium customers to make their passwords stronger to help combat potential breaches.

The security breach is the latest in a line of attacks that have affected the popular blogging host site. WordPress most recently suffered a security breach last month from a DDoS attack that temporarily brought down its data centers. A different attack occurred in 2009 when hackers gained access by creating secret administrator accounts. WordPress provides hosting to nearly 18 million users.

WordPress Hit By "Extremely Large" DDoS Attack

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Open-source blogging platform WordPress (www.wordpress.org) experienced a major DDoS attack on Thursday, according to a report by The Register.

The report says that the attack caused disruptions for many sites reliant on WordPress to post content, including TechCrunch.

TechCrunch reported that Automattic and WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg claimed this attack was the largest he has ever seen and is likely to be politically motivated against one of its "non-English blogs", though there is currently no evidence. Mullenweg went on to say the attack was large enough to impact all three of the company's data centers in Chicago, San Antonio and Dallas.

“WordPress.com is currently being targeted by a extremely large Distributed Denial of Service attack which is affecting connectivity in some cases,” Sara Rosso, a representative of WordPress owner Automatic, said in a statement. “The size of the attack is multiple Gigabits per second and tens of millions of packets per second.”

The statement by Rosso was released at 3:30 p.m. and by 7:30 p.m. the site was at 100 percent, according to a tweet by Lloyd Budd, WordPress.com VIP hosting services lead.

Rosso said that WordPress upstream providers were working "to prevent such attacks from connectivity going forward" and that WordPress would be making its VIP sites a priority in the recovery.
WordPress currently serves 30 million publishers, and is responsible for 10 percent of all websites in the world, according to TechCrunch. WordPress.com has about 300 million unique visits each month.
