(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Rackspace (http://www.rackspace.com/) announced on Thursday that it has launched its Rackspace Cloud DNS beta to all UK and US cloud customers, according to a blog post on its website.

Last week, Amazon Web Services expanded its DNS service Route 53 edge with new locations in Stockholm, Sweden. AWS' DNS service launched late last year.

Initially announced in March, Rackspace Cloud DNS beta was previously only available to customers who participated in the private beta phase, according to senior product manager for platform Daniel Morris.

According to the website, the Rackspace Cloud DNS beta automates and simplifies domain name system management and is currently a free service.
Morris says that as part of the next phase of the project Rackspace will be "overhauling the DNS management sections of the cloud control panel."

After receiving feedback from private beta customers, Rackspace says it has included several features such as REST-based API, new record types, performance improvements, comprehensive management capability, full TTL control and simplified migration.

The free service is IPv6 compatible and is available for customers with a Rackspace Cloud account. Morris says that exisiting Cloud Servers, Cloud Sites and RackConnect customers have access to the Rackspace Cloud DNS beta by default.

Rackspace says customers should have a general understanding of DNS management and be familiar with RESTful Web Services and JSON or XML Data Serialization Formats.

According to the website, the beta is backed by Rackspace's "fanatical support."

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Rackspace Hosting (http://www.rackspace.com/) has plans to triple its workforce in Austin over the next few years, according to a report by the Statesmen on Monday. The company is hosting its "Rackerpalooza" job fair on June 11, 2011 in Austin.

Austin has been the hub for Web hosting related hiring over the past few months with Data Foundry set to open its 250,000-square-foot data center in June. Recently, Web host HostGator expressed its intent to hire an additional 250 employees in Austin over the next year.

Headquartered in San Antonio, Rackspace currently employs almost 300 people in Austin, according to the report.

Rackspace's vice president of operations and site leader in Austin, Max Thoene, says the company hopes to expand to 1,000 workers in Austin over the next two to three years. The company opened a sales office in Austin in 2006.

Theone told the Statesmen that Rackspace saw potential in the area because of its pool of technical talent that it hopes to harness at its job fair this weekend. Rackspace is after candidates to fill jobs in software development, Linux systems administration, Windows system administration, network security administration and storage engineering, according to the report.

Rackspace encourages those interested in applying to check out its job fair website before attending on Saturday.

In May, Rackspace launched its hosted virtual desktop platform. Prior to this announcement, Rackspace released its first quarter results, including a $13.8 million net income on $230 million revenue.

Yellow Pages Subsidiary Partners with Rackspace, Environmental Groups

By Justin Lee, June 03, 2011 A screen shot of the Yellow Pages Goes Green website

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Environmentally friendly search engine and directory Yellow Pages Goes Green (http://www.yellowpagesgoesgreen.org/) announced on Friday it has joined the Environmental Protection Agency's (http://www.epa.gov/) Green Power Partners, Rackspace's GreenSpace hosting initiative (http://www.nativeenergy.com/Rackspace), and the Green Chamber of Commerce (http://www.greenchamberofcommerce.net/), in an effort to further advance its environmental sustainability agenda.

The EPA's Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that promotes renewable power by offering expert advice, technical support and resources to its member organizations.

In order to qualify for the Green Power Partnership, a business or organization is required to buy a certain amount of its power from renewable sources, determined as a percentage of its total annual electricity use in kilowatt-hours.

Yellow Pages Goes Green qualifies to participate in Green Power Partnership because it uses solar power to supply over half the electricity used in its business.

The GreenSpace initiative is a partnership between hosting provider Rackspace and carbon offset provider NativeEnergy.

The green initiative provides customers tools, such as energy efficient equipment, to help reduce the global warming impact of office energy, commuting and business travel.

"Our servers are hosted by Rackspace hosting on GreenSpace web servers," said Michael Keegan CEO of Yellow Pages Goes Green. "Rackspace has embraced the green movement by designing all of its data centers with the conservation of power in mind. It leverages the most up-to-date energy-efficient hardware and equipment to provide environmentally-conscious customers like Yellow Pages Goes Green with yet another opportunity to conserve, preserve and sustain our precious natural resources."

The Green Chamber of Commerce is a not-for-profit organization that develops sustainable business practices, and advocates for green public policy.

All businesses that have shown a commitment to going green can join the Green Chamber.

As an Internet-based alternative to printed telephone books, Yellow Pages Goes Green reduces waste by curbing the delivery of millions of hard copy yellow directories that depletes forests.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- UK Web hosting provider Rackspace (www.rackspace.co.uk) announced on Monday that it has been named the 33rd best place to work in the UK in the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies Awards 2011 and is the highest placed IT services company on the list.

This is the sixth year that the company has been awarded a best place to work in the UK, and is the second consecutive year that Rackspace achieved the highest ranking IT service organization in the medium-sized company category.
“I think this award shows that we are prepared to back up our technology proposition with serious investment in our people,” David Kelly, UK MD and senior vice president, international at Rackspace said in a statement. “We know that to nurture great innovation and talent, you have to provide a fresh, open and supportive environment – it is not just a matter of offering financial benefits and incentives. Our recent move to our new UK offices, which we call the European Home of Fanatical Support, is just one example of this – we now have a headquarters fit to house some of the finest technical minds and most passionate personalities in the country.”
Rackspace says that as part of its entry to the list it did an internal poll of its workers that found 83 percent of employees "love working for Rackspace and the new office no doubt helps contribute to this."
According to the statement, the new office has themed floors including a garage floor, retro lounge, library floor and a third-floor with trees, grass and porch swings.
“We are very proud of all the progress we have made over the last year and what's truly pleasing is that as the company has grown our Rackers still feel valued in their roles,” Kelly added. “Our continued success is without a doubt because of our Rackers’ tireless dedication to our 'Fanatical Support' service offering and the passion they show every single day.”
