SoftLayer Adds Local Disk Option

(The Hosting News) – SoftLayer^® Technologies, the innovation leader in Cloud, Dedicated, and Managed hosting, today announced the expansion of its storage options for CloudLayer^® Computing Instances (CCI) to include Local Disk Storage.
Available as an alternative to SoftLayer’s Storage Area Network (SAN)-based CCIs, the new option brings customers the ability to choose the storage that best meets their individual application and performance needs.

“Every customer is different, and needs different things from cloud,” said Duke Skarda, Chief Technology Officer for SoftLayer. “That’s why we created Build Your Own Cloud, letting customers tailor the CPU power, RAM, and storage capacity of their CCIs to their application requirements.
Local Disk Storage takes that even farther, bringing customers even greater control over how their cloud solutions perform.”

Local Disk Storage for CloudLayer Computing is implemented as RAID Level 10, for enterprise-grade reliability and security. 25GB or 100GB Local Disks are available for primary storage, and 100GB or 200 GB Local Disks are available for additional storage.
SAN-based storage continues to be available; currently the two storage options cannot be used together.

“There are inherent differences between SAN and Local Storage that give each their own advantages,” said Mr. Skarda.
“Since SAN-based CCIs store their data in a shared location, they will always provide faster recovery options and greater flexibility in scaling total storage capacity.
But, naturally, Local Disk-based CCIs can provide faster input/output speeds, making them an even better option for storage-intensive applications and lowering total cost of operations.
Now, it’s entirely up to you which benefits you’d rather leverage.”

Web Host SoftLayer Adds Local Disk Storage Option to CloudLayer Hosting

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider SoftLayer Technologies (http://www.softlayer.com/) announced on Tuesday that it has expanded storage options for CloudLayer Computing Instances to include Local Disk Storage.

This announcement comes a week after the WHIR did a Q&A interview with SoftLayer's chief scientist Nathan Day about his HostingCon 2011 presentation on "The Power of Innovation."

SoftLayer says this option is available to customers that want an alternative to its Storage Area Network-based CCIs. The new offering enables customers to choose the best storage for their individual application and performance needs.

While both are available, SoftLayer says currently the two storage options cannot be used in conjunction with each other.

SoftLayer says 25GB or 100GB Local Disks are available for primary storage and those requiring additional storage can leverage 100GB or 200GB Local Disks.

Last week, SoftLayer added high-availability dedicated firewalls to its firewall security services.

Web Host SoftLayer Partners with SendGrid for Email Delivery Service

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider SoftLayer Technologies (http://www.softalyer.com/) announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with SendGrid (http://www.sendgrid.com/) to launch its SoftLayer Email Delivery Service.

Last month SendGrid partnered with Web host Rackspace for an email infrastructure ideal for large amounts of email.
Available with any SoftLayer dedicated or CloudLayer Computing environment, SoftLayer says its email solution comes in four different packages, including a free option.

According to the press release, the email solution integrates into applications and services easily to allow customers to avoid the time and cost of developing a proprietary solution or licensing a third-party service.

“Practically every online application has email built into it in some fashion. So we wanted to provide an email delivery service our customers can easily merge and manage with their entire SoftLayer environment,” Nathan Day, chief scientist for SoftLayer said in a statement. “SendGrid’s platform was the ideal foundation for doing just that. Its extensive capabilities, performance, and features dovetail perfectly with our commitment to automation, reliability, and empowerment.”

The SoftLayer Email Delivery Service is capable of scaling up to millions of emails and provides real-time analytics.

“Application providers want to focus on pursuing their business objectives, not on creating and managing email delivery infrastructure,” Isaac Saldana, president and co-founder for SendGrid said in a statement. “We’re proud to partner with SoftLayer to offer that benefit directly to their customer base. As SoftLayer customers ourselves, we know firsthand that being able to integrate and control your whole solution in one place provides enormous efficiency advantages.”

The packages are priced based on volume of emails and other features. The free package offers 25,000 emails per month while the enterprise package allows 250,000 emails per month.
