Offering Cloud for Health, Parallels & Microsoft Partner

(The Hosting News) – With the goal of providing cloud services to institutions in the health industry, hosting and virtualization company Parallels and Microsoft recently formed a partnership.

The plan will give those in the industry including administrators, insurance providers, and doctors the option of using clouds, whether they are public, private, or hybrid.
The offerings seek to help make important information more readily available.

In a press release commenting on the matter, Parallels CEO Birger Steen stated, “We aim to provide emerging cloud service providers with vertical-specific solutions to bring to market and existing health service providers with a fast and reliable on-ramp to the cloud.”

Besides using Parallels Automation, Microsoft programs that will be used in the cloud offerings include Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft Lync Server and more.

With the agreement, Parallels joins the Microsoft Health Partner Executive Board. The two companies will
also work together to consult health institutions on IT matters.

Microsoft Partners with Web Hosts to Deliver Cloud Service Office 365

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/) announced on Tuesday it has officially launched Microsoft Office 365 (http://office365.microsoft.com), teaming up with several hosting providers to deliver the cloud service in 40 markets.

The new service brings together Microsoft Office, Microsoft SharePoint Online, Microsoft Exchange Online and Microsoft Lync Online in an always-up-to-date cloud service, at a predictable monthly subscription.

The service was introduced in beta last year, and in a few months, attracted more than 200,000 organizations registered users.

Businesses using Office 365 are already reporting impressive results and reducing IT costs by up to an estimated 50 percent while boosting productivity.

Microsoft says it is building a "massive partner ecosystem" around Office 365, including systems integrators, software vendors, resellers and other partners.

While some hosting providers may be concerned with how they will compete against Microsoft's new cloud service, many have chosen to view the new service as an opportunity to increase its market reach by partering with the company.

More than 20 service providers around the world have partnered with Microsoft by introducing plans to offer Office 365 to their customers this year.

These companies, which include Bell Canada, Intuit, NTT Communications, Telefonica, Telstra and Vodafone Group, will package Office 365 with their own services to deliver the new offerings to millions of small and midsize businesses globally.

"Great collaboration is critical to business growth, and because it’s so important, we believe the best collaboration technology should be available to everyone," said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. "With a few clicks, Office 365 levels the playing field, giving small and midsize businesses powerful collaboration tools that have given big businesses an edge for years."

Office 365 is available in a wide range of service plans designed to meet the needs of businesses of all sizes.

Users can access a centralized interface for instant messaging and virtual meetings, working on files and documents at the same time and sharing ideas.

With Office 365, applications like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote and Outlook connect to Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint and Lync to deliver a solution for communication and collaboration.

Many industry analysts believe Microsoft Office 365 will challenge Google's suite of online productivity tools.

Microsoft: Malware Down

(The Hosting News) – Autorun Malware is down, this according to a report posted online by the Malware Protection Center at Microsoft.

The report focuses on malware that takes advantage of the Windows component  “Autorun.”
However, in recent months, the company reports the number of infections has dropped significantly.

Microsoft attributes the drop to updates they’ve offered on Windows versions of XP and Vista.
The report states, “In comparison to the three months prior to the update, we saw 1.3 million fewer infections on Windows Vista and XP from February to May.”

Meanwhile, Microsoft expects the number of infections to continue to drop.

Microsoft Loses Supreme Court Appeal

(The Hosting News) – On Thursday, Microsoft lost a Supreme Court appeal over patents as Justices unanimously upheld a 2009 federal court ruling forcing the tech giant to pay $290 million to Canadian-based company i4i.

Microsoft’s appeal was based on a 2009 federal court ruling that found Microsoft guilty of infringing upon i4i’s XML technology in 2003 and 2009 versions of Microsoft Word.
Besides forcing Microsoft to pay the large sum of money to i4i, 2009’s ruling also forced the company to remove the infringing technology from Word.

Yesterday’s defeat marked Microsoft’s second attempt to appeal the 2009 verdict.
In their appeal, Microsoft argued that i4i’s patent on its XML technology was invalid.
Current law requires that plaintiffs give “clear and convincing” evidence when trying to prove the invalidity of a patent. However, Microsoft had argued that a lower standard should be set.

With yesterday’s ruling, the Supreme Court disagreed, stating, “The Court rejects Microsoft’s contention that a defendant need only persuade the jury of a patent invalidity defense by a preponderance of the evidence.” The court also said that any changes concerning patent evidence would have to be approved by congress.

In an email statement provided by Reuters, Microsoft spokesman Kevin Kutz stated, “While the outcome is not what we had hoped for, we will continue to advocate for changes to the law that will prevent abuse of the patent system and protect inventors who hold patents representing true innovation.”
Meanwhile, i4i was pleased with the ruling.

Despite losing the appeal, the battle is not completely over. Microsoft still has an ongoing patent challenge against i4i’s technology at the U.S. patent office.

Microsoft Highlights Increased Risk Of Mailware

(The Hosting News) – In a post on the company’s Internet Explorer official blog, Microsoft noted how Malware is an increasing problem for online users and stated that about 1 in every 14 downloads made online contains such. However, the company admitted that the statistic was only true for those using Internet Explorer.

The company stated, “User-downloaded malware is a huge problem and getting bigger” and showed how Malware makes its way onto users’ computers through downloads by displaying a graph showing the risks.

Microsoft initially posted the statistic to tout Internet Explorer 9′s ability to block malware attacks through its Application Reputation security feature.

The post also noted Application Reputation’s success rating, stating that 99% of users who received the malware warning didn’t end up opening the downloaded file and instead chose to delete it.

Microsoft Issues Details from Last Week's Exchange Online Outage

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Microsoft Exchange Online (http://www.microsoft.com/online/exchange-online.aspx) suffered three outages last Tuesday and Thursday, causing intermittent service interruption for business email customers on the company's US network

Clients using Exchange on its Business Productivity Online Suite cloud began seeing downtime for between six to nine hours on Tuesday, with little information from Exchange Online partners other than the outage status.

In the company's apology Thursday, Microsoft corporate vice president for online services Dave Thompson said that hub parts that support the company's BPOS-S Exchange service failed to work properly after it experienced "malformed email traffic".

Malformed traffic and another unrelated problem also claimed two more service interruptions on Microsoft's network Thursday, which led to more than three of hours of downtime for client and a backlog of 1.5 million emails.
The service failure also caused some customers to be unable to access Outlook Web Access, which Microsoft found to be the result of issues with its servers hosting the mail.microsoftonline.com domain.
Customers vented their frustrations on Microsoft's support forum, complaining about the outages and Micosoft's lack of communication.
In the company's apology, Thompson also said that Microsoft could have been more communicative with customers throughout the outages, and as a result, has updated its communications policy for the service.

"As a result of Tuesday's incident, we feel we could have communicated earlier and been more specific. Effective today, we updated our communications procedures to be more extensive and timely," said Thompson.

Microsoft's BPOS also experienced several outages last year, which the company later confirmed were caused by issues associated with an upgrade to its network.

Google and Microsoft Fight Over FISMA Approval

(The Hosting News) – On Tuesday, David Howard of Microsoft alleged that the U.S. Government had rejected Google’s claim that some of its apps had been certified under the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA). Despite this claim, Google had thoroughly stated that its apps had FISMA approval. Howard (Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel) contended that this would mean that Google had been guilty of falsely advertising.

Google quickly responded that the particular government apps that Howard made reference to were not the ones Google had advertised as FISMA certified. Instead, Google clarified that the government had approved Apps Premier and not the cloud-based suite. However, the company is currently developing newer government apps and will seek FISMA approval upon completion.

As of now, it appears that the larger more secure Google Apps for the government has yet to receive FISMA approval while some of the company’s smaller apps have. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s business standard app has not received FISMA approval either. Such approval means that a particular app has been certified by the U.S. government as secure to use.

Microsoft Co-founder Continues Lawsuit Against Top Tech Companies

(The Hosting News) – Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen re-filed a patent infringement lawsuit against several companies on Tuesday. This was just shy of the December 28th deadline for re-filing the case given by the court.

 

The original case had been thrown out of court in early December after U.S. District Court Judge Marsha Pechman declared that the complaint was too vague after stating “the allegations in the complaint are spartan.” The amended suit includes details that were not included into the original filing, and also hosts 40 displays showing the alleged patent infringement in action according to the Seattle Times. The companies named in the lawsuit among Apple are Google, Facebook, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Yahoo, Youtube, Netflix, and eBay.

 

Allen’s Interval Licensing filed the lawsuit on behalf of the Interval Research Corporation, a company he co-founded in 1992. Interval Research closed in 2000, but the patents are still active and under Paul Allen’s close scrutiny. The patents that Allen hope to protect outline “a browser for use in navigating a body of information, with particular application to browsing information represented by audio visual data”,  “attention manager for occupying the peripheral attention of a person in the vicinity of a display device” and a system for “alerting users to items of current interest.”
