cPanel Expands Its DNS Cluster Functionality

(The Hosting News) – cPanel, Inc. officially began extending its core DNS (Domain Name System) Cluster functionality by integrating with two major Partner NOCs, SoftLayer and UK2Group (under the brand VPS.NET).

On the Internet, the DNS system translates IP addresses into domain names (like SoftLayer.com, cPanel.net, or VPS.NET). But the process of turning web servers into centralized DNS servers can challenge many first-time server owners.

Fortunately, both SoftLayer and VPS.NET offer hosted DNS solutions that are geographically diverse, scalable, secure, and free of charge to their clients.

cPanel & WHM 11.30 includes new functionality and integration efforts that allows server owners to easily use the SoftLayer and VPS.NET hosted DNS systems, right from within the WHM interface.
cPanel’s newly extended DNS Cluster system provides server owners with the ability to enable DNS, obtain a secure API key, and use SoftLayer and VPS.NET hosted DNS services in just minutes.

cPanel CEO, Nick Koston, said that cPanel was able to rapidly develop this key piece of software once all the pieces were available from SoftLayer and UK2Group, and cPanel is looking forward to offering integration possibilities to other cPanel partners in the near future.

The open architecture of the extended DNS Cluster functionality provides hosted DNS providers with a streamlined process of handling integrations with cPanel & WHM. How to Setup Google Apps Email in cPanel

Most hosting accounts offer customers email services that are quite adequate. 
Some of them even provide web-based access to those accounts. 
Still, some customers may prefer the familiarity of their cloud email service, such as Gmail. 
They may also have their business tied to Google Apps or another cloud service. 
In such a case, you can easily make Google Apps your default email server in cPanel.

To configure cPanel to use Google Apps mail, do the following:

1. Login to cPanel and navigate to Mail section.
2. Select MX entry.
3. If you have multiple domains, select the domain you want to configure.  Otherwise, skip to step 4
4. In the “Email Routing” section, choose “Remote Mail Exchanger”
5. Giving it a priority of zero (lower priority is first), set the destination to your cloud service provider
(This may vary, but for Google, it may be something like ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM)
6. Click “Add New Record”
7. Repeat steps for the other records (Google requires several).

If you have any existing MX entries, delete them or give them lower priority than your cloud provider’s.
Now, any email sent to addresses at your domain will automatically be routed to your Google Apps gmail accounts, according to the addresses you have setup within that system. 
It should be noted that your web host will still have to route the email, so it will need to rely on your host’s DNS servers.

How to Edit DNS Records in cPanel

Using cPanel web hosting control panel, you can easily edit DNS zones without the hassle and risk normally associated with manually editing DNS zone files.  cPanel hosting automation makes it quick and simple.

To edit DNS zones:
1. Login to cPanel

2. In the “Domains” section, there are two options:  Simple DNS Zone and Advanced DNS Zone.  For Simple DNS Zone, continue with #3.  For Advanced, skip to #6

3. Select a domain from the drop-down menu

4. Enter the name and address information for an A record or a CNAME record.

Note:

A records are primary records that point directly to the server’s IP address, essentially translating a number address into a human-friendly domain address.  For example, your main URL (myowndomain.com) might have its own A record.

CNAME records are aliases for other domains or subdomains.  For example, you might enter the name “mail.myowndomain.com” to point to myowndomain.com.

5. When you are finished click “Add a Record” or “Add CNAME Record”.

Advanced DNS Zone

6. For Advanced DNS Zone, there are three types of records you can add: A, CNAME, and TXT.  TXT is for miscellaneous entries like SPF records.

7. To add a record, you must enter the Name, TTL (Time To Live), Type (A, CNAME, or TXT), and the Address.

8. To complete the changes, click “Add Record”.

MX Records

In cPanel, MX (mail) records are located in the mail settings.  If, for example, you are setting up cloud email, you will need to add both the MX records and CNAME records.
1. In the “Mail” section, click “MX Entry”.

2. Select your domain

3. Select “Local” (your own mail server), “Backup”, or “Remote” (such as a cloud mail server) mail exchanger.

4. To add a record, enter the priority (order in which the mail servers will be used, starting with “0”). and destination (either your domain or the remote server)

5. Click Add New Record.

cPanel & WHM 11.30 Now Available in RELEASEtier
