Google Launches Page Speed CDN Service

By Nicole Henderson,July 28, 2011

A demo shows a website loading with Google Page Speed
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Google (http://www.google.com/) announced on Thursday that it has released its Page Speed Service, a hosted solution that automatically speeds up loading of web pages.

Also on Thursday, the Senate's anti-trust panel scheduled a hearing titled, 'The Power of Google: Serving Consumers or Threatening Competition?' for mid-September. The US Federal Trade Commission will look into complaints from Google's rivals that allege it abuses its market dominance.

According to a blog post by Google engineering manager Ram Ramani, in order to use the service users need to sign up and point their site's DNS entry to Google.

"Page Speed Service fetches content from your servers, rewrites your pages by applying web performance best practices, and serves them to end users via Google's servers across the globe," Ramani writes.

The service promises to improve speed on websites by up to 60 percent. Currently, it is only being offered to a limited set of webmasters for free, but Google says it will be competitively priced eventually.

Google has set up a test site to measure users individual speed improvements.

This isn't Google's first step into the website optimization space. Two years ago Google released its Page Speed browser extension which tested performance and offered improvement suggestions to websites. Google also release its Page Speed API this year, and mod_pagespeed, an Apache module that automatically rewrites web pages.

The announcement is what many would call a no-brainer: the faster web pages load, the longer visitors stay online, as CNET pointed out in its report. This logic also influences the amount of time visitors are looking at ads.

Some seem to be concerned with the effect that Google's service will have on other web optimization firms like Akamai (http://www.akamai.com/) or CloudFlare (http://www.cloudflare.com/).

On Thursday, Akamai's shares plummeted, sliding nearly 20 percent to $23.85, according to Marketwatch. This could have something to do with Google's new service, but the report also indicated that smaller rivals have been challenging Akamai's market share for some time.

"One of the main differentiators between Google and CloudFlare is that Google's goal is to take over hosting via their AppEngine service, they are competitive with hosting providers," Matthew Prince, CEO of CloudFlare tells the WHIR. "CloudFlare works to be complementary to hosting providers.”

Prince says CloudFlare has known Google was working on this service for a while. Prince says he is happy to see other companies working to make the web faster.

"There's nothing that stops you from using Google Page Speed behind CloudFlare and I suspect if Google opens the service up more broadly we may offer it as a CloudFlare App -- just like we have with Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools," Prince writes in a blog post.

CloudFlare provides website optimization and security for free, regardless of bandwidth or website size, according to the post.

Google Acquires G.CO Domain

July 19th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) - Today .CO Internet S.A.S. announced that Google has acquired the domain name G.CO and will use the URL to more easily connect, communicate and engage with customers by launching an official shortcut for Google’s products and services.
The Registry also announced that well-known Silicon Valley Seed Fund and Incubator, 500 Startups, will be rebranding its web address from 500Startups.com to 500.CO.

Just days ahead of the one year anniversary of the public launch of the .CO domain, on July 20th, 2011, momentum continues to be strong as world-leading companies and entrepreneurs increasingly embrace the .CO platform.
Since it launched, the .CO domain has attracted more than one million registrations by individuals, organizations and businesses in more than 200 countries worldwide, including major brands like Twitter, Amazon and Overstock – and hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs around the globe.

In an announcement on the official Google Blog today (http://x.co/gcoshort), Gary Briggs, Google’s VP of Consumer Marketing, announced that G.CO would soon be the “official URL shortcut for Google websites.” Only Google will be able to create G.CO shortcuts, says Briggs; that means “you can visit a G.CO shortcut confident you will always end up at a page for a Google product or service.”

Increasingly considered to be a strategic digital asset by brands seeking to attract and engage consumers online, Briggs noted that “[i]n the world of URLs, bigger is not always better,” and that “the shorter a URL, the easier it is to share and remember.”

“We are thrilled to have Google join the select group of premium Internet brands that are using the .CO domain to innovate online,” said Juan Diego Calle, CEO of .CO Internet SAS.
“By featuring G.CO in its product and service marketing efforts worldwide, we are confident that Google will help to drive massive awareness and adoption of the .CO domain extension in the years ahead.”

On a related note, Silicon Valley seed fund and incubator, 500 Startups, also announced today that it will be rebranding its web address from 500Startups.com to 500.CO this Fall.
Founded by Internet entrepreneur, Dave McClure, 500 Startups has become one of the most prolific forces in today’s startup ecosystem, currently operating over 150 companies spanning five continents.

“.CO is quickly becoming the hot new geek TLD in Silicon Valley,” said McClure, in a blog post today on the 500 Startups blog (http://x.co/500co). “At 500 Startups we focus on doing things faster, making cycle time shorter, and simplifying brand – we know no one will care about your product if it’s not fast, easy-to-use, and memorable. We want to OWN the brand 500, and 500.CO helps us get there.”

“From the very beginning, .CO was built by entrepreneurs, for entrepreneurs,” said Lori Anne Wardi, vice president of .CO Internet SAS. “By making 500.CO its online brand, 500 Startups will role model to entrepreneurs in every corner of the world that .CO is the premium domain of choice to build the next generation of great companies online.”

“With .CO, startups can launch businesses and brands on a short, cool, credible domain name — without having to shell out a million bucks to do it,” says McClure. “That’s why we recommend .CO to companies in our portfolio, and why 500startups.com is moving to 500.CO.”

Google Loses Out on Nortel Patents

July 5th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – Nortel recently announced the results of the public auction on its remaining patents related to wireless and digital communication. The winner was an alliance of companies that included Microsft, Sony, and Apple.
The final bid totaled out at $4.5 billion.
In a press release by the company, George Riedel of Nortel stated, “Following a very robust auction, we are pleased at the outcome of the auction of this extensive patent portfolio.”

It was reported by various media outlets in April that Google would come out as the likely winner. Analysts speculated that Google would acquire the patents as a way to combat competition in the realm of wireless communication. Google had initially offered $900 million for the patents at the time.
Google is currently in a high profile patent battle with Oracle. Meanwhile, Google might look at other ways to obtain more patents.
Nortel filed bankruptcy protection in early 2009. The company is based in Canada.

Lawsuit over Google Street View Stays Alive

July 4th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – A lawsuit concerning data gathered during the creation of Google’s Street View will move forward after a district San Francisco judge refused to dismiss the suit last week.

When Google set up the service, in addition to taking images, the vehicles that were used to map the streets also collected personal user information of people in the area using Wi-Fi networks.

The information was revealed when German data officials inquired into the matter. The request concerned what information Google collected during its creation of Street View.

Google initially defended the action as a mistake and apologized. However, the company has since tried to get the lawsuit thrown out on the basis that anyone could have accessed the data.

Google has also promised to disregard and delete the data.

Meanwhile, proponents of the lawsuit have argued that Google’s actions violated the Federal Wiretap Act.

Those behind it include various residents from several states who have admitted to using unsecure wireless networks.

Besides becoming news in the U.S., the actions became known internationally when Google was fined 100,000 euros in March by France over the issue.

Google Street View is a feature of Google Maps that allows users to move around worldwide streets while viewing real-life images obtained by Google Street View vehicles.

In China, Microsoft & Baidu Partner

July 4th, 2011 By: 128coach

(The Hosting News) – Microsoft and Chinese search engine Baidu have partnered to provide Chinese citizens with English-based online search results, the New York Times recently reported.

The news means that Microsoft’s search engine Bing will be available through Baidu.

“Bing’s cooperation with Baidu will allow the vast Baidu users to receive better English search experiences and results and allow more Chinese users to experience Bing,” Microsoft’s Senior Global VP said in a statement provided by the New York Times.

Google had previously pulled its search engine from functioning in certain parts of China.

The Chinese tech market is especially sensitive due to censorship concerns. In the past, the country is known to have blocked such top global-known sites including Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

$2.6 Billion Sought by Oracle in Suit against Google

June 29th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – Database management company Oracle recently filed a new document in U.S. District Court specifying that they’re seeking 2.6 billion  from Google.

Oracle claims that Google has ripped off its patent designs related to Java. The company filed the lawsuit against Google in August of last year.

Earlier this month, Oracle had estimated it deserved an amount that was in the billions, but the exact price they were seeking was not specified until yesterday.

Google has previously challenged Oracle’s methodology and claimed that it should owe the database management company less.

Meanwhile, Reuters has estimated that a trial could start sometime in November.
The lawsuit has been based out of California and Oracle is headquartered in Redwood Shores, CA.

Google Unveils Social Network

June 29th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – Google unveiled a new social network called Google+ on Tuesday, possibly setting up a new rivalry with social networking site Facebook.

In a post outlining the social network on the company’s blog, Google stated, “We’d like to bring the nuance and richness of real-life sharing to software. We want to make Google better by including you, your relationships, and your interests.”

With its initial release, Google+ features 5 distinct social user capabilities.

A featured dubbed Circles allows the user to share things with their friends while a feature called Hangouts allows users to share where they’re hanging out, thus giving the friend a chance to join them.

Meanwhile, Instant Upload allows users to create albums featuring their photos and videos.
With another feature called Sparks, users are able to tell Google their interests. Google then provides updates related to the interest.

The last feature called Huddle provides friends with a live multi-user chat platform.
Google says this will provide friends with easier decision making.

Despite the announcement, Google+ is only currently available in a limited capacity.
Not everyone can sign up just yet. For more information, visit: https://plus.google.com/

Google to Continue Data Center Leases at 111 8th Ave. Carrier Hotel

By Justin Lee,June 16, 2011
An image of the 111 8th Ave building in Manhattan

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Google has no plans on getting rid of its existing data center and network tenants at its newly acquired 111 8th Ave. carrier hotel any time soon, according to a blog post by Grubb & Ellia' Michael Mandel.

In May, Google took the building's remaining space off the market, leading some to speculate that the company was holding onto the space for itself.

A new Google job listing indicates that the company is looking to fill a New York-based position dubbed "Strategic Negotiator, Network."

According to the listing, the Stategic Negotiator must "spearhead the acquisition and allocation of Google's global networking infrastructure... must interact closely with outside vendors to design, develop, and deliver highly innovative contracts for dark fiber, colocation, peering, voice, and data services across the world."

The responsiblities include developing and executing "on a vision for continuously improving the distinction of 111 8th Avenue as a premier location for telecommunications carriers, data center and colocation facility operators, and their customers."

Mandel says that while Google has not yet specified the "extent to which data center tenants will have a place in 111 8th Ave... it certainly appears that these tenants are part of the vision for the building's future."

In January, Google acquired the 2.9 million square foot building for $1.9 billion.

Google's Strategy for 111 8th Avenue Space Could Leave Web Hosts Looking Elsewhere

By Justin Lee, June 06, 2011

An image of the 111 8th Ave building in Manhattan

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Just a few months after Google (www.google.com) acquired Manhattan's 111 8th Avenue data center carrier building, it appears as though the company is looking to significantly expand on its office space within the building, according to a report by Data Center Knowledge.

In December, the company acquired the massive Internet hub, which spans 2.9 million square feet and is estimated to be worth $1.9 billion.

Originally the headquarters of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the building was sold to Google by a group comprised of real estate investment company Jamestown, Taconic Investment Partners and New York State Common Retirement Fund.

At the time of the acquisition, Google said the deal was fueled by its rapidly growing workforce and not taking control of an important carrier building.

There might handle its role as landlord of one of Manhattan’s primary Internet connectivity hubs, and what it might mean to the telecom carriers and data center operators who are tenants in the building.

Last month, Google took the building's remaining space off the market, leading many to speculate that the company is holding onto the space for its own operations.

Google currently occupies about 500,000 square feet of the building's space, with the remaining 1.4 million square feet leased by telecommunications and hosting companies.

These include data center giants like Digital Realty Trust, Equinix, Telx and Internap. It is still unclear whether these existing tenants will be allowed to renew their leases when they end.

If Google takes up the entire building space for its own operations, it could leave hosting companies looking elsewhere for their data center needs in what is considered one of the busiest markets in the country.

Security Researchers Find Phishing Sites on Google Docs

By Justin Lee, May 31, 2011

A screenshot of a Google Docs forms that may contain a phishing site

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- New findings by security research group F-Secure (http://www.f-secure.com/) reveal that online application Google Docs may contain phishing websites, according to the company's blog post Monday.

Using Google Docs, individuals can create documents and spreadsheets which are hosted on Google's cloud platform.

And while seeing the google.com domain in the address may reassure many visitors that the site is both safe and secure, F-Secure findings may cause many to reconsider.

The security research firm says it consistently finds many phishing sites "via Google Docs spreadsheets and hosted on spreadsheets.google.com."

These phishing sites can insert themselves on Google Docs and bypass the Internet browser's online security detectors.

The reason is because Google domains include a valid SSL certificate that reassure the individual it is visiting a secure site.

During its research, one particular website F-Secure came across has become the subject of much debate.

The form requests users for their Google Voice number, email address and the PIN code on your assigned to the account.

While the form seems to be a phishing site, some Google employees provided a link to the website on the company's Help messageboard.

F-Secure admits it does not know what to make of these findings, and has opened up the discussion via Twitter.

The majority of the comments on F-Secure's Twitter stream appear to support the notion that the form is, in fact, a phishing site.

F-Secure also noted that after it published the blog post, it was contacted by a Google employee who confirmed that the website is the official Google form to request Google Voice account transfer.
