(The Hosting News) – It appears that authorities worldwide have been busy cracking down on hacking groups. Fifteen people in Italy suspected of involvement in hacking group Anonymous were recently arrested according to a report by AFP who cited an Italian newspaper.
Despite being taken into custody, the suspects have since been released. Five of them were minors.
Reuters also reported that authorities in Switzerland arrested an Italian, also suspected of being involved with the group.
Meanwhile, Anonymous has already responded to the arrests and remains defiant.
In a blog post, the group stated, “The Italian Anonymous have not fallen because of this cowardly attempt to dismantle them and announce consequences for there actions taken by the police, to demonstrate that Anonymous is present and fights on, like it did in the past and will in the future, for the freedom of the Internet.
Italy Anonymous calls all citizens of the Internet and the international Anonymous: We need you! Let them have it, stronger than ever.”
The group has been busy stepping up its hacking operation in a movement called “AntiSec.” Hackers involved in the movement breach systems based on political motivations.
In the past Anonymous has been suspected in breaches of several government sites including ones belonging to Turkey. The group was also initially suspected in April’s downtime of the PlayStation Network. However, they denied any involvement.
Anonymous recently announced that members of the now defunct hacking group LulzSec had joined them. LulzSec shut down after a 50 day operation that included breaches on sites belonging to the CIA, U.S. Senate, an FBI affiliate, PBS, Sony, and more.
So far this year has seen a large amount of hackers increasing their operations. Panda Security, which specializes in online protection recently referred to 2011′s second quarter as “disastrous” as far as worldwide breaches were concerned.
