Expanding Linux Portfolio, Oracle Acquires Ksplice

July 22nd, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – Making big news in the area of Linux, database management company Oracle today announced that it has acquired Ksplice, a Linux security updater.

The acquisition gives Oracle an expanded portfolio in the areas of diagnostics and security updates for Linux.
Oracle offers its own open source operating system known as Oracle Linux, which the company provides for free.
However, the company provides various support through paid services.
Financial terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed in a press release on the matter.

Commenting on the acquisiton, Ksplice CEO Jeff Arnold stated, “Ksplice’s technology will be able to take Oracle’s kernel updates and transform them into zero downtime updates that provide always-accessible systems with no reboot necessary.
This results in improved system availability and security as well as reduced operational costs for the customer.”

Ksplice is known for its Ksplice Uptrack, a program that advertises itself as having zero downtime, while providing users with a way to update Linux without having to reboot their systems.
Ksplice’s site lists the advantages of not having to reboot as avoiding downtime, saving time, and avoiding security problems.
