(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Technology giant Dell (http://www.blogger.com/News/www.dell.com) announced Wednesday it opened a data center in Shanghai in support of its cloud initiative, which it revealed earlier this year, according to a blog post on the company's website.
Marking the first of its kind for Dell in the Asia-Pacific and Japan regions, the data center will host public and private clouds and provide customers with off-premise application and storage services.
The cloud computing data center will also conduct research and development of reference architectures for services related to cloud technology.

In April, Dell revealed its plans to invest $1 billion over the next three years to deliver "solutions, services and cloud-based delivery options" to launch and sell cloud services.

At the time, Dell said that a part of this budget would go towards building multiple data centers around the world, as well as facilities to research cloud and virtualization technologies.

Last month, Dell opened a cloud data center in Ireland, and will open 12 additional cloud data centers this year, including in Paris, Tokyo, Sydney, New York and Sao Paulo.

The company also recently opened data centers in Singapore, Frankfurt, Washington, DC, Chicago and Austin.

Since it announced its entry into the cloud services market, Dell has been quickly building out its cloud software and hardware portfolio.

The company has already acquired 11 companies in the last two years. In May, Dell said it is looking to buy more companies to build this portfolio.

As a seller of servers designed for scale-out environments, Dell's cloud data centers can only help its chances of selling more servers and growing out its data center services.
Dell has already sold servers in the Chinese market for more than 10 years, but the company is currently trying to expand its enterprise business in the fast growing Chinese IT market.

The company said it will hire employees for the new cloud data center, but did not disclose an exact number.
