(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Australian data center operator Global Switch (http://www.globalswitch.com/) experienced an outage at its flagship Sydney data center, Thursday morning, causing downtime for some customers.

The outage occurred when an unnamed contractor accidentally set off the fire trip system shutdown on one of its UPS systems, according to a report by ComputerWorld.
At about 10:20 a.m. on Thursday, one of the data center's two power distribution feeds stopped operating, resulting in a "very small" number of customers experiencing an outage, Global Switch managing director, Damon Reid said.

"The power was reestablished on to the second feed for those customers within an hour and the UPS system was back up and running on that second feed as well," Reid said. "We know the root cause of the problem now and we're just working through how that occurred."

Reid said the company will issue an investigative report regarding the outage and will keep affected customers "fully up to date", as it works on the situation.

Telecommunications provider Pacnet said that its network was affected by Global Switch's power failure on level two at the facility.

"While the core network was not affected, some edge services were impacted," said Pacnet Australia CEO Deborah Homewood. "Pacnet maintained continued communication with affected customers and managed a higher than normal call volume during this time."

Pacnet said that all its services had since been restored and the company is continuing to monitor the situation. Other affected customers included HarbourMSP, Exigent and Servers Australia.

Global Switch owns and operates data centers across seven locations in Asia-Pacific and Europe, including its second data center, Sydney 2.

The company recently began a $1.59 billion data center expansion, and is planning to expand existing data centers or build new data centers in Paris, Amsterdam, London, Sydney, Singapore and Hong Kong.
