An image of a fiber-optic cable
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) –- A 75-year-old Georgian woman accidentally severed an underground fiber-optic cable on March 28, leading to a massive Internet outage in all of Armenia, large parts of Georgia, and some areas of Azerbaijan.
The elderly lady was digging for copper cable close to Georgian capital Tbilisi to sell as scrap when her spade sliced through the Internet cable belonging to the Georgian railway network.
A Western European-based system monitoring discovered the damaged link and immediately issued a security team to the loaction, where the woman was arrested.
Taking unused copper cables for the purpose of selling as scrap is a common practice in the former Soviet Union.
Since Georgia provides 90 percent of Armenia's Internet, the damaged cable resulted in an Internet outage that lasted up to five hours for some 3.2 million Armenians.
The unidentified woman, who has since been nicknamed "the spade-hacker", is facing charges of damaging property with a potential prison sentence of up to three years.
The woman has since been released "on account of her old age" but will likely face more questioning, according to a spokesman for Georgia's interior ministry.
