Lawsuit over Google Street View Stays Alive

July 4th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – A lawsuit concerning data gathered during the creation of Google’s Street View will move forward after a district San Francisco judge refused to dismiss the suit last week.

When Google set up the service, in addition to taking images, the vehicles that were used to map the streets also collected personal user information of people in the area using Wi-Fi networks.

The information was revealed when German data officials inquired into the matter. The request concerned what information Google collected during its creation of Street View.

Google initially defended the action as a mistake and apologized. However, the company has since tried to get the lawsuit thrown out on the basis that anyone could have accessed the data.

Google has also promised to disregard and delete the data.

Meanwhile, proponents of the lawsuit have argued that Google’s actions violated the Federal Wiretap Act.

Those behind it include various residents from several states who have admitted to using unsecure wireless networks.

Besides becoming news in the U.S., the actions became known internationally when Google was fined 100,000 euros in March by France over the issue.

Google Street View is a feature of Google Maps that allows users to move around worldwide streets while viewing real-life images obtained by Google Street View vehicles.
