(The Hosting News) – IBM has successfully created the world’s first grapheme circuit that is capable of hosting frequencies that go up to 10 GHz, the company announced Friday.
Graphene, an allotrope of Carbon contains the thickness of an atom.
The circuit itself consists of a broadband radio-frequency transmitter. To function, the graphene circuit analyzes input frequencies and determines their sum and difference. The circuit then sends off new signals based upon the information. Analysts believe this could give wireless providers the ability to drastically extend network ranges.
In a press release, T.C. Chen, IBM Research’s Vice President of Science & Technology stated, “This research breakthrough has the potential to increase the performance of communication devices that enable people to interact with greater efficiency.”
Graphene has proven particularly difficult to work with in the past as it doesn’t function with metal too well. However, to work around the problem, researchers added a protective layer of polymer around the actual graphene inside the circuit.
IBM previously built a transistor made of graphene and demonstrated it early last year.
