(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Rackspace (http://www.rackspace.com/) announced on Thursday that it has launched its Rackspace Cloud DNS beta to all UK and US cloud customers, according to a blog post on its website.

Last week, Amazon Web Services expanded its DNS service Route 53 edge with new locations in Stockholm, Sweden. AWS' DNS service launched late last year.

Initially announced in March, Rackspace Cloud DNS beta was previously only available to customers who participated in the private beta phase, according to senior product manager for platform Daniel Morris.

According to the website, the Rackspace Cloud DNS beta automates and simplifies domain name system management and is currently a free service.
Morris says that as part of the next phase of the project Rackspace will be "overhauling the DNS management sections of the cloud control panel."

After receiving feedback from private beta customers, Rackspace says it has included several features such as REST-based API, new record types, performance improvements, comprehensive management capability, full TTL control and simplified migration.

The free service is IPv6 compatible and is available for customers with a Rackspace Cloud account. Morris says that exisiting Cloud Servers, Cloud Sites and RackConnect customers have access to the Rackspace Cloud DNS beta by default.

Rackspace says customers should have a general understanding of DNS management and be familiar with RESTful Web Services and JSON or XML Data Serialization Formats.

According to the website, the beta is backed by Rackspace's "fanatical support."
