(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Environmentally friendly search engine and directory Yellow Pages Goes Green (http://www.yellowpagesgoesgreen.org/) announced on Friday it has joined the Environmental Protection Agency's (http://www.epa.gov/) Green Power Partners, Rackspace's GreenSpace hosting initiative (http://www.nativeenergy.com/Rackspace), and the Green Chamber of Commerce (http://www.greenchamberofcommerce.net/), in an effort to further advance its environmental sustainability agenda.
The EPA's Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that promotes renewable power by offering expert advice, technical support and resources to its member organizations.
In order to qualify for the Green Power Partnership, a business or organization is required to buy a certain amount of its power from renewable sources, determined as a percentage of its total annual electricity use in kilowatt-hours.
Yellow Pages Goes Green qualifies to participate in Green Power Partnership because it uses solar power to supply over half the electricity used in its business.
The GreenSpace initiative is a partnership between hosting provider Rackspace and carbon offset provider NativeEnergy.
The green initiative provides customers tools, such as energy efficient equipment, to help reduce the global warming impact of office energy, commuting and business travel.
"Our servers are hosted by Rackspace hosting on GreenSpace web servers," said Michael Keegan CEO of Yellow Pages Goes Green. "Rackspace has embraced the green movement by designing all of its data centers with the conservation of power in mind. It leverages the most up-to-date energy-efficient hardware and equipment to provide environmentally-conscious customers like Yellow Pages Goes Green with yet another opportunity to conserve, preserve and sustain our precious natural resources."
The Green Chamber of Commerce is a not-for-profit organization that develops sustainable business practices, and advocates for green public policy.
All businesses that have shown a commitment to going green can join the Green Chamber.
As an Internet-based alternative to printed telephone books, Yellow Pages Goes Green reduces waste by curbing the delivery of millions of hard copy yellow directories that depletes forests.
