IBM to Open $38M Cloud Computing Data Center in Singapore

By Justin Lee, March 07, 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- IBM (www.ibm.com) announced on Monday it has invested $38 million in a new IBM Asia Pacific Cloud Computing Data Center in Singapore.
The announcement comes a couple months after IBM revealed it would be collaborating with China-based Range Technology Development to build the largest cloud computing data center in Asia, located in China's Hebei province.
The new facility will extend IBM's globally via its integrated cloud delivery network with centers in Germany, Canada and the United States.
The company also has 13 global cloud labs, of which seven are based in Asia Pacific, including China, India, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore.
Set to open in April, the new data center will make available IBM's comprehensive cloud services and technology portfolio via the company's cloud delivery infrastructure.
These services are designed to help clients increase flexibility and agility, accelerate time to market, reduce costs, and increase security and compliance of public cloud environments.
"IBM's investment in our Asia Pacific Cloud Computing Data Centre in Singapore reflects the increase in demand for cloud solutions and services by our clients in the region," says  Paul Moung, VP of cloud computing at IBM Growth Markets. "The Centre will provide the highest security standards and capabilities to minimize capital expenditure and reduce operational costs."
The first offering to be available at the IBM Asia Pacific Cloud Computing Data Center will be from IBM's infrastructure as a service cloud portfolio, which is designed to provide rapid access to security-rich, enterprise-class virtual server environments and is well suited for development and test activities and other dynamic workloads.
IBM Software Group and third party companies will also offer a suite of software with a range of payment models designed for mid-size and large enterprises and ISVs, including application development, functional and non-functional testing, and dynamic workloads

WordPress Hit By "Extremely Large" DDoS Attack

By Nicole Henderson, March 04, 2011

A screenshot of the statement issued by WordPress regarding the attack

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Open-source blogging platform WordPress (www.wordpress.org) experienced a major DDoS attack on Thursday, according to a report by The Register.
The report says that the attack caused disruptions for many sites reliant on WordPress to post content, including TechCrunch.
TechCrunch reported that Automattic and WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg claimed this attack was the largest he has ever seen and is likely to be politically motivated against one of its "non-English blogs", though there is currently no evidence. Mullenweg went on to say the attack was large enough to impact all three of the company's data centers in Chicago, San Antonio and Dallas.
“WordPress.com is currently being targeted by a extremely large Distributed Denial of Service attack which is affecting connectivity in some cases,” Sara Rosso, a representative of WordPress owner Automatic, said in a statement. “The size of the attack is multiple Gigabits per second and tens of millions of packets per second.”
The statement by Rosso was released at 3:30 p.m. and by 7:30 p.m. the site was at 100 percent, according to a tweet by Lloyd Budd, WordPress.com VIP hosting services lead.
Rosso said that WordPress upstream providers were working "to prevent such attacks from connectivity going forward" and that WordPress would be making its VIP sites a priority in the recovery.
WordPress currently serves 30 million publishers, and is responsible for 10 percent of all websites in the world, according to TechCrunch. WordPress.com has about 300 million unique visits each month.

.CO Registry Announces Deployment of DNSSEC

March 3rd, 2011 By: THN News (The Hosting News) – .CO Internet S.A.S., the registry operator for the .CO domain, announced today that it has completed deployment of Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) into the Internet root zone. In doing so, .CO joins a select group of registry operators leading the charge in the implementation of a suite of new security features that will help create a more secure Internet.
DNSSEC is a set of specifications for securing certain kinds of information provided by the Domain Name System (DNS) that is designed to protect the Internet from specific types of attacks, such as DNS cache poisoning, which can lead to cyber-crimes such as identity theft. With full end-to-end deployment, it will eventually allow Internet users to know with certainty that they have been directed to the precise website they intended to reach.
“We’re proud to be announcing the successful implementation of DNSSEC today,” said Nicolai Bezsonoff, COO of .CO Internet. “.CO is one of the fastest growing domain extensions in the world, and registrants and end users can rest assured that we are committed to providing the highest level of Internet security – both now and into the future.”
The smooth implementation of DNSSEC follows several months of careful planning and a successful test phase in January 2011. A strong partnership with Neustar, Inc., the .CO Registry’s technology services partner, was a critical success factor.
“By implementing DNSSEC so soon after the launch of .CO as a global domain, the .CO Registry has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the security and integrity of the .CO name space,” said Tim Switzer, Vice President of Domain Name Registry Services at Neustar. “We look forward to continuing to support the .CO Registry as it plays an increasingly active role in addressing the security challenges of the 21st century — and in helping to develop the policies, standards and practices that govern the global Internet.”
About .CO Internet S.A.S.
.CO Internet S.A.S. is the Registry Operator for the .CO top-level domain. The .CO domain offers individuals, organizations and businesses a truly global, recognizable and credible web address for branding their online presence. Google Tapped to Host Royal Wedding Website

By Justin Lee, March 03, 2011
A screen shot of the Royal Wedding website

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Google (www.google.com) announced on Tuesday via its Europe Developer blog that it has been selected to host the official Royal Wedding website (www.officialroyalwedding2011.org).
Now launched, the website provides information, including photos and videos, about the upcoming April 29th wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
The website also includes an embedded YouTube video, a link to a Facebook Page, and Twitter and Flickr streams.
The Royal Wedding site promises to be the first to offer all information regarding the wedding, including facts about Middleton's wedding dress.
The deal is certainly a significant customer win for Google, considering the amount of press and attention the event is currently receiving, and will undoubtebly help to attract more organizations that are considering using Google App Engine.
On the Europe Developer Blog, the company wrote that the Google App Engine "allows developers easily to build and host their web applications on Google's own computing infrastructure," and offers a "great way to run apps quickly, more securely, and at scale, which makes it ideal for such an important national occasion."
At the bottom of every page on the Royal Wedding website is a brief note that says, "Powered by Google App Engine, implemented by Accenture."
According to its website, Accenture is a "global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company" that serves clients in more than 120 countries.
The website also mentions that "Subject to further planning work, the website may feature a live web stream broadcast of the wedding itself," which would be a rather daunting task in terms of handling the overwhelming web traffic.

Web Host BlueHost Pulls Anti-Gay Website Following Complaints

By Justin Lee, February 28, 2011
A screen shot of the parked BlueHost page at ChristchurchQuake.Net

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- A Utah-based web hosting provider BlueHost (www.bluehost.com) has temporarily taken down a US-based Christian website that blamed the recent New Zealand earthquake on gays and lesbians.
The devastating earthquake hit Christchurch early last week, causing the deaths of at least 147 people and as much as $15.1 billion in damages.
The US-based ChristchurchQuake.Net claims the quake was the vengeful act of God, punishing homosexuals for their lifestyles and actions.
Within hours of the disaster, the website posted a message claiming that the "quake was a warning from God".
Thousands of angry Internet users emailed and sent complaint letters to BlueHost regarding the website, which is hosted on its servers.
The website currently directs visitors to a parked page with the following notice: "The website you were trying to reach is temporarily unavailable. Please check back soon."
ChristchurchQuake.Net wrote on its website that the earthquake happened on the same day the Christchurch gay ski week was about to launch.
The site warned Christchurch citizens in this message:
"Do we really want to tempt fate and risk another quake? The morning of the Christchurch earthquake was the opening of 'Gay Ski Week'. The highlight of the week was a party featuring two of NZ's ugliest and butchest lesbians as the main event in Queenstown. Squadrons of "imports" were to have been brought in for the week — from Sydney's now booming gay and lesbian area around Oxford St, between the CBD and Kings Cross."

Facebook Storefront Service ShopFans to Offer Symantec Security Products

By Nicole Henderson, February 25, 2011
A screenshot of a ShopFans e-commerce site on Facebook

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Security firm Symantec (www.symantec.com) announced on Friday that it has partnered with social commerce firm Adgregate Markets (www.adgregate.com) to offer SSL certificates and the VeriSign Trust Seal to customers of ShopFans, a Facebook application for creating e-commerce stores within the social networking platform.
According to the announcement, stores created with ShopFans can enable transactions in Facebook without sacrificing security and privacy using VeriSign SSL certificates and VeriSign Trust Seal.
ShopFans was built as a native Facebook Platform application so brands can tie directly into all of the infrastructure of Facebook, including News Feed stories promoting Wish Lists, Likes, Shares, gift registries, private and flash sales, loyalty rewards, social badging and more.
Adgregate says 92 percent of chief marketing officers at leading retailers are focusing marketing efforts on Facebook, and that a recent report found 71 percent of users said they are more likely to buy after "liking" the brand.
“Retailers and their Facebook fans deserve the most secure solution available — and that’s what they get from Symantec and Adgregate, two leaders in social commerce security,” Henry Wong, CEO Adgregate said in a statement.
Adgregate says ShopFans has a combined total online annual sales of over $8.5 billion.
“The attraction to Facebook as a platform for commerce is irresistible, but retailers must ensure that their Facebook presence is one that establishes the levels of trust necessary to convert fans into customers – and to keep them coming back,” Fran Rosch, vice president of Trust Services at Symantec said. “We’re delighted to work with an innovator like Adgregate, whose vision for social commerce is helping to take the Facebook experience in an entirely new direction. By displaying the VeriSign Trust seal, Facebook stores created with ShopFans will transform more browsers into buyers.”
The VeriSign Trust Seal confirms the identity of the site operator as independently authenticated by Symantec. The sites are scanned daily for malware by Symantec, and search engines display the seal next to the name in the search results. VeriSign says its certificates and trust seal help drive traffic to online stores, and build loyal relationships with customers.
Last week Symantec launched the new version of its endpoint protection security.
