An image of the Department of Justice seal(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The Department of Justice is looking to pass a new law that would require all Internet service providers to hold on to customer data for investigative purposes, according to a report by CNET.
In a testimony held this week, DOJ told Congress that ISP's ought to have a policy that requires them to retain data.The department explained that many of its criminal investigations -- such as cases involving child pornography, online fraud, and hacking -- are being hindered by the fact that it is unable to monitor and store users' online activity.
The DOJ said it would make a strong effort to bridge the gap between privacy concerns and investigative concerns.
While some ISP's currently have policies in place where they store customer data, the maximum time period that they hold on to data varies from a few days to months. The DOJ wants to create a standard policy that would regulate data retention.
"They may be the only way to learn, for example, that a certain Internet address was used by a particular human being to engage in or facilitate a criminal offense," Jason Weinstein, deputy assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's criminal division told Bloomberg.
Many are concerned about the potential privacy issues that would emerge if the proposal is realized, while others think that enforcing such a policy would only complicate things for ISP's as they would be forced to store more data for longer periods of time.
