(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Oregon Senator Ron Wyden has sent a letter to the head of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (www.ice.gov) that questions the agency's seizure of domain names over the past few months.
In late November, Homeland Security seized the domain names of more than 70 websites it said were involved in either the sale of counterfeit goods or the distribution of pirated material.
In the letter, the senator asks ICE ten questions he wants answered relating to their methods of seizing the domains.Wyden has previously called out the government on its methods of fighting copyright infringement, which included putting the Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeit Act on hold before the end of the most recent congressional meeting.
He writes: "I write to learn more about the seizures of Internet domain names that your offices executed over the last year. These seizures represent a major shift in the way the US government combats copyright infringement in the digital environment."
The senator pointed out that a few of the sites that ICE shut down might not have been involved in any illegal actions.
He singles out Spanish site rojadirecta.org and music site dajaz1.com in the letter, asking ICE on the methods it used to confirm that these sites were engaging in illegal activities before shutting them down.
He argues that ICE seized dajaz1.com without first alerting the domain's owner that his site was being accused of illegal activity before shutting down the site.
Wyden also challenges the government's methods in using its power to invade the privacy of American citizens.
