UK Information Commissioner Christopher Graham being interviewed on the BBC
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- A UK law firm faces a charge of $1650 over insufficient IT security, according to a report by ComputerworldUK.
According to the report, the owner of ACS:Law, Andrew Crossley, could have faced a penalty of almost $330,000 since leaking 6,000 people's personal information last September.
ACS:Law was tracking alleged infringers of music, video and adult content copyrights, Computerworld UK says, and when ACS Law's website was hacked a file containing emails from the firm was accessed. The firm sent letters to people saying they had pay a fine for downloading the material or go to court.
The file had people's ISP account details, names, addresses and IP addresses.
Other emails included credit card numbers, and information about health and financial status.
The Information Commissioner found that Crossley had failed to protect the firm's IT system, leaving it vulnerable with no firewall or access control. Crossley did not consult professional advice when he set up the system and had used a web hosting package intended for domestic use only, the report says.
“Sensitive personal details relating to thousands of people were made available for download to a worldwide audience and will have caused them embarrassment and considerable distress,” Information Commissioner Christopher Graham said. “The security measures ACS Law had in place were barely fit for purpose in a person’s home environment, let alone a business handling such sensitive details.”
According to a report by IT Pro, Graham says the fine would have been much higher if Crossley "had the money to pay up" since the firm is now defunct.
Crossley may have to pay for legal costs after his filesharing cases were dropped in court, ComputerworldUK says.
