Hackers Hit PBS with Fake Tupac Story

May 31st, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – Hackers were able to compromise PBS’s website on Sunday, posting a phony news story about deceased rapper Tupac Shakur being found alive in New Zealand to the site’s Newshour Rundown section.

The hackers also posted personal PBS login information to other sites.

The cyber-attack was committed by the group in retaliation for an episode of PBS’s Frontline. The episode examined the recent WikiLeaks controversy, which resulted in the unauthorized release of previously classified US documents.

In a statement, hacker group “Lulz Boat” took credit for the incident, saying they were “less than impressed” by the documentary, so they decided to, “sail our Lulz Boat over to the PBS servers for further… perusing.”

Speaking to the Associated Press about the incident, Frontline executive producer David Fanning said, “From our point of view, we just see it as a disappointing and irresponsible act, especially since we have been very open to publishing criticism of the film.”

Through a statement, PBS noted that it was working to restore site services to normal.
