Hacker Group LulzSec Attacks Nintendo, FBI Affiliate Security Firm InfraGard

By Nicole Henderson,June 06

A tweet from LulzSec claims no hard feelings for attacking Nintendo

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Hacker group LulzSec struck twice this past weekend, attacking FBI cybersecurity affiliate InfraGard (http://www.infragard.net/) and Nintendo (http://www.nintendo.com/). LulzSec has been busy as of late, hacking the PBS Frontline website in May and more recently accessing personal information of Sony Pictures users.

Nintendo says no personal information was accessed in the attack in a statement released Sunday. According to Reuters, the attack happened several weeks ago and a tweet from LulzSec claims it only accessed a server configuration file from one of Nintendo's US-based servers.

Though LulzSec says it didn't cause too much damage to Nintendo because of a fondness for the game console maker, the Atlanta chapter of FBI affiliate InfraGard wasn't so lucky.

Approximately 180 passwords and usernames were leaked and posted online, including passwords from cybersecurity firms and the US Army, according to the Associated Press. LulzSec says it targeted InfraGard in reaction to the US government's plans to make hacking an act of war in serious cases.

According to its website, InfraGard is a partnership between the FBI and private sector to "prevent hostile acts against the United States" through "information sharing and analysis."

“Someone did compromise the website,” InfraGard Atlanta Members Alliance President Paul Farley told the Associated Press. “We do not at this time know how the attack occurred or the method used to reveal the passwords.”

LulzSec says the logins were all affiliated with the FBI in some way, and that most of the login passwords were reused elsewhere, like personal email for example.

LulzSec says it was able to access the personal Gmail of cybersecurity company Unveillance founder Karim Hijazi and stole all of his personal emails and company emails. Hijazi allegedly tried to bribe LulzSec to "eliminate his competitors through illegal hacking means" after being notified of the attack, according to a press release.

Among the emails, LulzSec says it "uncovered an operation orchestrated by Unveillance and others to control and access Libyan cyberspace through malicious means."

Hijazi has denied the claims.

Sony recently recovered from an attack that left its PlayStation Network out of commission for over a month.
