Hacker Group LulzSec Targets Australian Web Host DistributeIT

By Nicole Henderson, June 17, 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Hacker group LulzSec (www.lulzsecurity.com) has turned its attention to Web hosts as it took down Australian domain registrar and web host DistributeIT (www.distributeit.com.au) on Saturday, according to a report by the Register.

According to DistributeIT's blog it is still working to restore services to its customers. On Friday morning, DistrubuteIT's website was still down though the URL it redirected to its blog.

"The attack was a deliberate attempt to take down the DistributeIT business, and doesn't appear to be specifically aimed at stealing client data for gain," DistributeIT said in a blog post. "The attackers were coordinated in their approach and set out to do as much damage to our systems and software as possible, which they were largely successful at achieving. The attack was very swift, precise and lasted only a short duration and was targeted towards destroying drive header files therefore maximizing the impact in the short time they had before our engineers shut down the network."

DistrbuteIT took to its blog and Twitter feed to update customers of the extent of the attack. The company shut down its phone support on Tuesday after being swamped with the volume of requests.

The Web host has told its clients to change server passwords and says it is unsure why it was target of this attack. LulzSec has targeted gaming sites, government sites and now adds web hosting providers to its list of victims.

According to a report by CRN, DistributeIT's resellers have reported losing customers due to the attack and have criticized the hosting provider for its lack of detailed information as its reseller partners struggle to explain to clients what went wrong and when service will be restored.

These kinds of scenarios are precisely why Web hosts should have a plan in place to deal with customers before an attack hits. The WHIR talked to lawyer David Snead about how hosting providers can build strategies to deal with cyberattacks.

LulzSec most recently attacked the CIA website.
