Security Researchers Find Phishing Sites on Google Docs

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- New findings by security research group F-Secure (http://www.f-secure.com/) reveal that online application Google Docs may contain phishing websites, according to the company's blog post Monday.

Using Google Docs, individuals can create documents and spreadsheets which are hosted on Google's cloud platform.

And while seeing the google.com domain in the address may reassure many visitors that the site is both safe and secure, F-Secure findings may cause many to reconsider.

The security research firm says it consistently finds many phishing sites "via Google Docs spreadsheets and hosted on spreadsheets.google.com."

These phishing sites can insert themselves on Google Docs and bypass the Internet browser's online security detectors.

The reason is because Google domains include a valid SSL certificate that reassure the individual it is visiting a secure site.

During its research, one particular website F-Secure came across has become the subject of much debate.

The form requests users for their Google Voice number, email address and the PIN code on your assigned to the account.

While the form seems to be a phishing site, some Google employees provided a link to the website on the company's Help messageboard.

F-Secure admits it does not know what to make of these findings, and has opened up the discussion via Twitter.

The majority of the comments on F-Secure's Twitter stream appear to support the notion that the form is, in fact, a phishing site.

F-Secure also noted that after it published the blog post, it was contacted by a Google employee who confirmed that the website is the official Google form to request Google Voice account transfer.
