IMF Hit by Hackers

June 13th, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) –  It was revealed on Saturday that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently faced a breach of its computer systems. Despite the attack, the organization is reported to be fully functional.

The New York Times reported that the IMF alerted its employees of the attack on Wednesday and that one senior IMF official stated, “This was a very major breach.”

The organization is said to still be analyzing the attack’s consequences. However, some security experts believe the attack could have originated from a nation’s government.

To provide further protection from the attack, the IMF has temporarily cut off networking to the World Bank.

Although the exact time that the attack happened is still unknown, it’s thought that it occurred sometime over the past few months.

It is a pivotal time for the IMF. The financial organization is weighing such issues as bank regulations, economic guidelines, and currency laws. The IMF’s former head, Dominque Strauss-Kahn recently resigned after being arrested in New York due to allegations of sexual assault.

The attack marks just the latest event in worldwide entities facing the wrath of hackers. Most recently, companies and services such as Sony, Lockheed Martin, PBS, an FBI affiliate, and Gmail faced breaches of their systems.
