Top Ten Tips for Getting Tech Budgets Approved

(Gawkwire.com) - IT professionals often wonder what is on the mind of their corporate CFOs, especially when it comes to submitting and obtaining approval for IT project budgets. “It’s not that we’re against new technology,” says Greg Baker, Logicalis CFO. “It’s just that we’d often like a little more justification to accompany technology requests.” Logicalis (http://www.us.logicalis.com), an international provider of integrated information and communications technology (ICT) solutions and services, works with customers to help technology and business work together. To provide IT professionals with some insight into the thought process that CFOs use when assessing technology requests, Baker has developed the CFO Confidential: . CFO Confidential:

“Here’s a look at what’s going on inside your CFO’s head when you make a budget request,” says Baker. You can also find out how to get your CFO’s approval for IT expenditures by reading Logicalis’ feature article, “Making IT Matter: Getting to Yes,” at http://www.us.logicalis.com/pdf/CIO-CFO%20Feature%20Story.pdf

1.    I’m never going to approve a project without a measurement attached. It will just never happen.
2.    You’re not getting new software without a good P&L justification. Go find some business sponsors first.
3.    Learn to be a good IT storyteller. Tell me a story that links IT to enabling success in our business.
4.    Firefighting is not part of our strategic plan. Explain again why we can’t outsource more of our IT administration.
5.    I don’t understand IT jargon. Can you explain your proposal again without all the acronyms?
6.    Where was the courteous heads-up 2 months ago? We can only break the emergency glass so often.
7.    Technology doesn’t run an organization, relationships do. I wish we had lunch and talked more often.
8.    Don’t forget: It’s all about payback! Don’t focus on how technology works; focus on how it improves sales, customer service or loyalty.
9.    Give me more details. When you want my signoff, don’t forget to mention the vendors you’re using, the project timing, and the amount you’re requesting.
10.    You won me at the word “variable.” Bring forward more IT cost models that can gear up and down with our business needs and sales trends.

“Some of these are obviously a little tongue-in-cheek, but there’s a lot of truth behind each one. I recommend you take a look through the list before submitting your next technology budget request,” says Baker.
