Darren Anstee, EMEA solutions architect at Arbor delivering his presentation
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) –- The afternoon's final session at the Magic Cinema came from Darren Anstee, EMEA solutions architect at Arbor (http://www.arbor.net/).
With the rather lengthy title of "Distributed Denial of Service: The emerging and alarming threat against hosted and Cloud services", Anstee started his presentation by discussing the eveolution of the DDoS threat.
In Arbor's 2010 infrastructure security survey, which was conducted between September and October of 2010, the company found that the severity and complexity of DDoS is growing,
There was a a 102 percent year over year growth, and a 1000 percent growth since 2005.
Anstee explains that charging attacker motivations and increased availability of Botnets have been contributing factors to this significant increase.
On the more technical side, Anstee discussed the infrastructure of DDoS attacks against data centers,
He walked attendees through the anatomy of a DDoS attack, as well as looked at examples of common attacks, such as volumetric traffic floods, reflection attacks, TCP resource exhaustion, and application layer attacks.
The last section of his presentation concentrated on best current practices in combating DDoS threats.
As Anstee explains, the six phases of infrastructure security begins with preparation, identification, classification, traceback, reaction, and post mortem.
Intelligent DDoS mitigation systems is a key part of a DDoS detection and mitigation solution. They look at changes in normal behavior, says Anstee, using such monitoring devices as a flow telemetry.
Using baseline, misuse and fingerprint detection, IDMS use a multi-layer filter to mitigate counter-measures against attacks, he says.
