(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Yahoo has revealed plans to invest $500 million in expanding its data center infrastructure, according to a report Friday by Data Center Knowledge.
Yahoo says it plans to build in 2012 and beyond. The planned expansion includes existing data centers in Buffalo, Omaha and Washington state and new facilities in Singapore and Switzerland.“We are in essence rewiring the entire infrastructure of Yahoo,” Scott Noteboom, the head of data center operations at Yahoo said. “We’ve gained approval to invest half a billion dollars to build new data centers. We’ll be migrating the entire footprint of Yahoo to these more efficient facilities.”
According to the report, Yahoo released its Yahoo Computing Coop last year, a design that uses factory-built components and relies on fresh air rather than mechanical cooling.
In September, Yahoo opened a facility in Lockport, New York. The 155,000-square-foot data center was the first to implement Yahoo's Computing Coop. It has a power usage effectiveness of 1.08, compared with the industry average of 1.92.
In October, Yahoo announced that construction on its Avenches, Switzerland data center had begun. This facility is expected to have the same low PUE rating as the New York data center. The Switzerland location will be the first implementation of the YCC design in a retrofit of an existing building, according to the report.
Yahoo says it will build about 20 "edge pods", or smaller data center that store content closer to users. The facilities support caching and content delivery.Noteboom says Yahoo can build new data center space for less than $5 million per megawatt of electric power, translating to an addition of 100 megawatts of capacity to the company's data center footprint with the next phase of expansion.
