(The Hosting News) – The Center for Copyright Information has united online service providers with major companies involved in the entertainment industry to fight online piracy, the group announced on Thursday.
By uniting, the group will use a system called “Copyright Alerts” to protect against unauthorized movie and music downloads. The center says that the system will act similar to alerts used to detect credit card fraud and alert online users when they are downloading protected files.
In the posting, the center states, “Data suggest that, once informed about the alleged content theft and its possible consequences, most Internet subscribers will quickly take steps to ensure that the theft doesn’t happen again.”
ISPs involved in the agreement include AT&T, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon and more.
Some of the media groups in the agreement include Paramount, Walt Disney, Sony Music, and Warner Brothers.
In the past both internet providers and copyright holders have had trouble protecting against illegal downloads.
In the release, the Center for Copyright Information stated, “Every year, content theft costs the U.S. economy more than 373,000 jobs, $16 billion in lost earnings, and $3 billion in lost federal, state and local government tax revenue.”
