Toshiba Server Breach Compromises Email Information of 681 Customers

By Nicole Henderson, July 18, 2011

Toshiba's US division is the latest company to be hacked in recent months

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Technology firm Toshiba (www.toshiba.com) announced over the weekend that a breach to its US sales subsidary's server has compromised email addresses and passwords of 681 customers.

According to a report on Saturday by the Wall Street Journal, Toshiba says the server at Toshiba America Information Systems had personal data for 7,520 customers, though none of the information included credit card or social security numbers.

While there are fewer victims in this breach than those stemming from hacker group Anonymous recently, these sorts of consumer information leaks are becoming a regular occurrence to technology corporations. Last week alone, Anonymous leaked the information of 2,500 employees of agrictulural firm Monsanto, and 90,000 passwords and emails of military personnel from Booz Allen Hamilton.

Both The Hacker News and TechEYE.net report that hacker group VOiD was responsible for the attack.

According to a Toshiba spokesperson, the company's US division noticed a problem on July 11 and confirmed two days later that it had been hacked. Toshiba has no insight on when the hacking took place, according to the report. The company continues to investigate, according to the spokesperson.

Toshiba says its US division has already notified customers of the possibility that their data has been compromised.

"Toshiba and its Group companies regard data security as a priority concern and will continue a thorough investigation of the incident," the company said in a statement on Monday. "Toshiba will take all necessary precautions to avoid any recurrence of similar incidents and to ensure customer information remain secure."
