(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Honda Canada (http://www.honda.ca/) has waited nearly three months before informing customers of a breach to its server late February, according to a report by inaudit.
According to the report, Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada, said the scale of the breach had to be determined before the company alerted its customers.
The report says that the personal information of approximately 280,000 customers was accessed, including name, address, vehicle identification number and in some cases Honda Financial Services account numbers.
Honda says the compromised data was from 2009. The information was related to a mailing program that encouraged customers to register at the myHonda website.
Honda says it is not concerned about identity theft since information such as birth dates or credit card numbers were not part of the data breach. The company has warned customers to be wary of emails from third parties that reference Honda marketing campaigns.
“Honda sincerely apologizes for this incident and we are working diligently to protect your information and improve our data security procedures,” the company said in a statement.
The company has reported the incident to the Canadian federal privacy commissioner's office.
While Web hosts have to follow different protocol when dealing with cyberattacks, it is important to have a plan in place so customers know the extent of the breach, rather than assume the worst.
In April, technology giant Sony faced a breach that compromised nearly 100 million users private information, including credit card numbers.
