(The Hosting News) – UCR researchers and the StopTheHacker start-up have launched the first free malware identification application for Facebook. The effort is a response to the recent surge of Facebook spam that distribute fake links, conning users in the lure of free flights on Southwest or videos of Bin Laden’s death.
MyPageKeeper is a free Facebook Application that monitors and protects Facebook profiles. The application continuously scans wall-posts, news-feeds and links posted by friends of participating users. As soon as malware, spam or other undesirable material is detected, MyPageKeeper notifies the user and enables the user to remove malicious content from their profile.
“Facebook is the new web. Hackers have realized this, and they have started using it to distribute malware and conduct identity theft”, says Md. Sazaddur Rahman, graduate student at UCR. Facebook provides a fertile ground to spread malware, since users trust links and posts seemingly from their friends.
“StopTheHacker is very pleased to partner with UCR in this effort, as it is a natural fit for the company”, says Dr. Anirban Banerjee (PhD UCR), co-founder of StopTheHacker. StopTheHacker is a security startup, that spun off from UCR’s Network and Security lab with the mission to “make the Internet safer one website at a time”, as is their trademark.
Hundreds of users are already using the service. Although the service is still in beta mode, it already provides significant protection and control over the emerging wave of Facebook-based spam and malware.
