Oops! Dropbox Accounts Vulnerable during Update

June 21st, 2011 By: THN News

(The Hosting News) – Cloud service provider Dropbox accidently left 25 million user accounts vulnerable to exposure yesterday after an update to the site’s code functioned improperly.

Once noticing the mistake, DropBox temporarily ended all user sessions on the cloud service.
During the four hour time period,  any random text could be entered as a password to access user accounts.

In a statement on company’s blog, Dropbox stated, “We’re conducting a thorough investigation of related activity to understand whether any accounts were improperly accessed. If we identify any specific instances of unusual activity, we’ll immediately notify the account owner.”

Despite the exposure, Dropbox says login of user accounts only accounted for less than 1% during the mistake period.

Dropbox was founded in 2007 and is headquartered in San Francisco, California.
